AMD Sets the New Standard for Price, Performance, and Power for the Datacenter
—AMD Opteron™ 6000 Series platform with Direct Connect Architecture 2.0 delivers more cores, more memory for less money[i]—
—Up to 119 percent improved performance while maintaining
low price and power[ii]—
Singapore — March 29, 2010, 12.01PM — AMD (NYSE: AMD) announces availability of a new server platform featuring the world’s first 8- and 12-core x86 processor for the high-volume 2P and value 4P server market. The AMD Opteron™ 6000 Series platform addresses the unmistakable needs of server customers today – workload-specific performance, power efficiency, and overall value – while delivering more cores and more memory for less money.[iii] Leading OEMs including HP, Dell, Acer Group, Cray, and SGI are introducing new systems based on this highly scalable and reliable platform.
“As AMD has done before, we are again redefining the server market based on current customer requirements,” said Patrick Patla, vice president and general manager, Server and Embedded Divisions, AMD. “The AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform signals a new era of server value, significantly disrupts today’s server economics and provides the performance-per-watt, value and consistency customers demand for their real-world data center workloads.”
The new AMD Opteron 6000 Series platform features include:
· The industry’s only 8- and 12-core server processors performing at up to two times the level of AMD’s previous generation 6-core processors, including an 88 percent increase in integer performance[iv] and a 119 percent increase in floating point performance².
· Enhanced integrated memory controller supporting four channels of DDR3 memory for up to a 2.5x improvement in overall memory bandwidth.[v]
· Thirty-three percent more memory channels per processor than competitive 2P solutions.[vi]
· 50% higher DIMM capacity compared to previous generations, with up to 12 per processor, increasing the available memory overall and improving virtualization, database and HPC applications.
· AMD 5600 Series chipset with I/O virtualization capability, HyperTransport™ 3.0 technology and PCI Express® 2.0.
· Removal of the “4P tax”, since the same processors can be used in both 2P and 4P designs, and 4P-capable processors are now the same price as 2P-capable processors, bringing greatly improved value to the 4P space.
· Unprecedented price/performance. In a comparison between a best-performing 2P competitive platform versus a similar best-performing 4P AMD-based platform, customers can recognize up to double the performance and more than 10% lower total processor price.[vii]
· Significant new power management features including a C1E power state to conserve energy when idle, the Advanced Platform Management Link allowing APML-enabled platforms to be remotely monitored for power and cooling, and AMD CoolSpeed technology, which automatically reduces p-states if a specified temperature limit is exceeded.
· A wide range of power and performance options with no compromise on the available feature sets.
· A legacy of consistency and stability. The new AMD Opteron platform is chipset- and socket- compatible between 2P and 4P and will be compatible with the planned processors based on the next-generation AMD server processor core, code-named “Bulldozer”.

Motorola Inc, the handset maker that’s rebuilding its mobile-phone business around Google Inc’s Android software, has dropped the Google’s search engine from one of its Android phones in China.
Motorola no longer includes Google’s search engine in its Zhishang device shipped to China Telecom Corp, David Wolf, acting head of public relations for Asia at the Schaumburg, Illinois-based handset maker, said in an e-mail.
Google’s decision to stop censoring its Chinese service may lead some companies to switch to rivals, such as Baidu Inc, operator of China’s biggest Internet search engine. Motorola is adding Baidu as an option on Android phones sold in the country, and this month said Microsoft Corp’s Bing search and maps service will be preloaded onto its China phones.
“If you were partnering with Google in China, your business plans have just fallen apart,” said Bertram Lai, head of research at CIMB-GK Securities in Hong Kong. “You need to scramble and find new partners.”
‘Honeymoon’
None of Motorola’s four Android phones sold in China currently carries Google’s search engine as it’s not available for license in China, Motorola spokeswoman Kathy Van Buskirk said.
“You had a honeymoon between Motorola and Google until Google developed its own Nexus phone,” said Pierre Ferragu, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Co LLC in London. “The more Motorola can show that Google has to be cooperative to the handset makers, the better.” He has an “outperform” rating on Motorola.
China Unicom (Hong Kong) Ltd yesterday said it doesn’t use Google search on its phones, after billionaire Li Ka-shing’s Tom Online Inc said it stopped using the US firm’s link on its portal. Unicom, China’s second-biggest wireless carrier, only works with companies that abide by Chinese law, President Lu Yimin told reporters in Hong Kong. The Beijing-based operator is not working with Google currently, he said.
Chinese partners for Google’s search operations need to review their business ties because the U.S. company’s service license in China will need to be renewed, said Fang Meiqin, research director at BDA China Ltd, a Beijing-based telecommunications industry consultant.

Stevesy (Jobs, not Zissou) is certainly not going to like this. iPhone hacker extraordinaire George Hotz aka geohot has just teased the iPhone community with a 68 second video showing off a new untethered jailbreak. Here’s his statement:
The jailbreak is all software based, and is as simple to use as blackra1n. It is completely untethered, works on all current tethered models [iPod touch G2, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch G3], and will probably work on iPad too.
