We have seen quite a number of ASRock P67 or H67 boards with UEFI BIOS. How about the AMD platform.

The wait is over. ASRock introduces their latest 890FX Deluxe5 motherboard. This board comes equipped with UEFI BIOS. Based on the AMD 890FX + SB850 chipsets, it also supports the futuristic unannounced AM3+ Socket and supporst 8 Core AMD processors.

ASUS Showcases its Latest Innovations at CeBIT 2011
Tablet PCs, notebooks, consumer entertainment and gaming products on show
Singapore (February 28, 2011) —ASUS today kicked off CeBIT 2011 with a booth media tour where journalists from around the world were given the opportunity to explore and experience the latest ASUS innovations prior to the official opening of the event.

Fujitsu Semiconductor Limited and ARM today announced that they have signed a comprehensive license agreement for ARM IP products. Through this strategic agreement, Fujitsu Semiconductor will offer platforms featuring the latest ARM technology including the Cortex™-A15 processor, Mali™ graphics and CoreLink™ systems IP, in order to help accelerate its customers’ product development.

The two companies have been collaborating for more than a decade. More recently, Fujitsu Semiconductor launched sales of its FM3 family of general-purpose microcomputers equipped with the Cortex-M3 processor last November.

The agreement will enhance and deepen the companies’ partnership, and Fujitsu Semiconductor will provide its customers with cutting-edge ARM technology at an early stage as it develops new products in order to accelerate its customers’ product development.

The combination of compatible and scalable low-power processor IP, including the recently launched Cortex-A15 processor, graphics and fabric IP, will enable Fujitsu Semiconductor to continuously provide its customers with complete, full function SoC platforms featuring ARM technology, while significantly reducing time-to-market.

“Fujitsu Semiconductor is working to enhance its product appeal and boost its IP lineup,” said Corporate Senior Vice President Haruyoshi Yagi of Fujitsu Semiconductor. “One of the major ways in which we are doing this is with this comprehensive license agreement we have signed with ARM. Gigabyte to showcase Slate PC S1080  at CeBIT 2011

At the CeBIT event next week, Gigabyte will be showcasing their tablet based on the Atom processor.

The S1080 Slate PC is powered by Intel Dual Core Atom N550/570 CPU. It uses a 10.1″ capactive multi touch screen. The hardware comes with a 7mm HDD, DDR3, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, D SUB and SD card slot.It will be powered by Windows 7 Home Premium.  The S1080 weighs 880g.

If you noticed, the specs seems to be a netbook. You are right as no tablets has RJ45 LAN port but it is available on the S1080.

On top of that it has WiFi, BT v3.0 and 3.5G HSDPA support.

Corsair to Preview Force Series GT SSDs at CeBIT

– New SandForce-based High-Performance SSD Line Supports 6Gb/s SATA 3 –

Corsair Announces Transition Plan for Force Series Solid-state Drives

FREMONT, California February 18, 2011 Corsair®, a worldwide designer and supplier of high-performance components to the PC gaming hardware market, today announced its plans for the upcoming transition from 34 nanometer to 25 nanometer flash chips used on its solid-state drives.

“There is a lot of confusion in the market about the impact the move from 34 to 25nm flash will have on both the price and the performance of solid-state drives,” said John Beekley, VP of Technical Marketing at Corsair. “We’ve been working closely with SandForce to ensure the smoothest possible transition and we’re sharing the details today.”

Flash memory manufacturers are transitioning to using 25nm process for fabrication, allowing them to boost capacity and reduce costs, which in turn will allow SSD suppliers to pass those savings to the consumer. The downside is that SSDs built using 25nm flash ICs may require more over-provisioning (a technique used to ensure reliability) which lowers the capacity of the SSD and may also see a reduction in performance.

“The Corsair and SandForce engineering teams have been working closely with the key flash memory suppliers to profile and qualify 25nm parts,” continued Beekley, “and we’ve been running our Force drives through performance and reliability testing alongside them. We’re pleased with the progress that’s been made in getting the Force Series 25nm drives ready to ship to customers.”

In the Corsair Labs, using the ATTO synthetic benchmark, only a small reduction in performance (roughly 3-4%) was seen when testing Force Series SSDs built with 25nm flash.  Real-world tests, such as copying groups of files or measuring Windows boot times, support the ATTO results and show little to no performance loss.  However, the over-provisioning needed means that in some cases the capacity of the drives will be reduced.

“So that our customers are perfectly clear about what they are getting, we will be changing the model numbers on all 25nm based drives and transitioning the drive capacities we offer where necessary. For example, a drive that would have been sold as 120GB when built with 34nm flash will be launched as a 115GB version,” said Jared Peck, Global Product Marketing Manager for SSDs at Corsair, “All Force Series drives built with 25nm flash will also have a ‘-A’ suffix on the part and/or model number, making it easy to determine exactly what you’re getting.”

Force Series 115GB and 80GB 25nm drives will be available by the end of February from Corsair’s worldwide network of resellers and distributors.  The F115-A has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $215 and the F80-A has an MSRP of $169 in the U.S.  For comparison the current Force Series F120 has an MSRP of $249 and the F80 has an MSRP of $199.

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Intel Corp.’s (INTC) chief executive said the chip giant remains committed to its MeeGo operating system and doesn’t believe ARM Holdings PLC (ARMH) will be competing in servers anytime soon.

Intel partner Nokia Corp. (NOK) said last week that it was shifting strategy to adopt Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT) Windows Phone as its main smartphone platform rather than MeeGo–something Intel Chief Executive Paul Otellini characterized as a financial decision on the part of Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop.

“Between Microsoft and Google [Inc. (GOOG)], he was getting incredible offers [of] money,” Otellini said at an investor conference in London.

But Otellini said he wouldn’t have made the same decision to sell himself to the highest bidder and if not staying with MeeGo, would have gone with Google’s operating system.

“I probably would have gone to Android if I were him,” he said. “MeeGo would have been the best strategy for him, but he concluded he couldn’t afford it.”

He added the problem for phone makers is finding a way to differentiate themselves.

“It’s going to be hard to do that on Windows,” Otellini said. “It’s less hard to do on Android. On MeeGo, he could have done it. We’ll find other partners.”

MeeGo was formed last year as a combination of Nokia’s Maemo and Intel’s Moblin platforms, and was expected to be used in Nokia’s high-end smartphones and other devices such as tablets and TV sets. At times, MeeGo appeared as a contender as companies jostle to create the third major marketplace for smartphone applications after those created by Apple Inc. (AAPL) for the iPhone and Google for its Android operating system.

Last week, however, Nokia said it believes Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 will become the primary alternative to those market leaders. The cellphone giant also indicated Windows 7 would be a greater focus of technology development than its venerable Symbian operating system.

Intel has struggled in the mobile arena, with its chips viewed as too power hungry. While it has garnered some tablet design wins, the company has yet to have a chip designed into a smartphone on the market.

Otellini said that while Intel doesn’t have a smartphone announcement yet, there will be a device “from a premier vendor in the marketplace this year.” He expects Intel chips to “ramp up significantly on all the major phone” operating systems over the next several years and take share from rivals.

And one advantage Intel has over the ARM companies, he said, is the consistency of its architecture. Each ARM licensee uses the cores differently, and the instruction sets are different, he said.

“This is a big, expensive, hard job to create consistency in your architectures over multiple generations,” Otellini said. “That’s what we do exceptionally well.”

Meanwhile, Otellini said the PC market will continue growing, even with the rising popularity of tablets.

And he isn’t worried about competition in the server market from ARM-based chips despite plans from companies like Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) to expand into traditional computing and servers using ARM processors.

“I don’t see [ARM chips] being a factor in servers anytime soon, if ever,” Otellini said.

He said ARM developers don’t have the software capability, compute architecture and transistor performance to compete.

“It’s not going to happen,” Otellini said. “[Rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD)] is much more potent as a server competitor than the ARM guys ever will be.”

Intel shares ended regular trading up 1% to $21.97. They are up 6.3% over the past 12 months.

NVIDIA Reports Financial Results for Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2011

— Revenue increased 5.0 percent to $886.4 million from the third
quarter.
— We believe some analyst estimates may have recorded the Intel
settlement as revenue, rather than as a credit to operating
expenses, artificially raising revenue consensus.
— GAAP net income grew to $171.7 million, or $0.29 per diluted share,
from the third quarter’s $84.9 million, or $0.15 per diluted share.
— GAAP gross margin increased to a record 48.1 percent from the third
quarter’s 46.5 percent.

NVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA) today reported revenue of $886.4 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2011 ended Jan. 30, 2011, up 5.0 percent from the prior quarter and down 9.8 percent from $982.5 million from the same period a year earlier.

On a GAAP basis, the company recorded net income of $171.7 million, or $0.29 per diluted share, compared with $84.9 million, or $0.15 per diluted share, in the previous quarter and GAAP net income of $131.1 million, or $0.23 per diluted share, in the same period a year earlier. GAAP gross margin was a record 48.1 percent compared with 46.5 percent in the previous quarter and 44.7 percent in the same period a year earlier.

Fourth Quarter Fiscal 2011 and Recent Highlights:

— NVIDIA demonstrated its next-generation mobile processor, the world’s
first quad-core mobile processor, at Mobile World Congress. The
company is sampling to customers now, putting it at least a year ahead
of the competition. NVIDIA expects to see tablets and phones later
this year.

— Customers announced a number of products incorporating the Tegra(R)
2 mobile processor, including Acer, with its EeePad Slider, EeePad
Transformer and Iconia A500 tablets; Dell, with the Dell Streak; LG
Electronics, with the LG Optimus 2X phone and the Optimus Pad; and
Motorola, with the Atrix and Droid Bionic phones, the Xoom tablet for
Verizon and an unnamed tablet for AT&T. After quarter end, Samsung
announced the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and revealed it was working with NVIDIA
on a Tegra-powered superphone and Toshiba announced an unnamed 10″
tablet.

— NVIDIA announced that it is developing a custom CPU that will use the
ARM instruction set, known internally as Project Denver. The Denver
CPU cores will be integrated into future generation processors for
PCs, servers, and supercomputers. Separately, Microsoft announced
that its next generation Windows will include native support for ARM
SOCs such as Tegra.

— NVIDIA extended its licensing agreement with Intel for $1.5 billion
over the agreement’s six-year lifespan. Revenue and costs from the
license portion of this agreement will commence April 1, 2011; see the

— In addition to its long partnership with the Volkswagen Audi Group,
NVIDIA announced that BMW will also use NVIDIA GPUs for infotainment
systems in next-generation cars worldwide. Tesla(TM) Motors will
also incorporate Tegra processors to power the infotainment,
navigation and instrument cluster in its Roadster Model S.

— NVIDIA launched the GeForce(R) GTX 570 and GTX 560 Ti, the most
advanced GPUs for gamers.

— NVIDIA announced that PC manufacturers are expected to launch 200 new
PCs that use NVIDIA(R) GeForce GPUs paired with the new generation
of Sandy Bridge CPUs.

Rumour has been on going for some time about a potential buy out of AMD. This coincides with the sudden change of management, starting with CEO Dirk Meyer, followed within weeks by COO Robert Rivet and Marty Seyer, senior VP for corporate strategy. This left the company without a leader. The search for replacements would take months before major decisions can be made.

So the rumour started in the industry that Dell was mentioned as a possible buyer. AMD shares traded up 4 percent for part of the day but closed down 3 cents during the regular session. Dell more or less shot down the rumor yesterday. During its earnings conference call, CEO Michael Dell, answering a question on acquisitions said “…we’re looking for relatively smaller sized ingredient acquisitions where we can leverage them with our substantial customer access and distribution.” With AMD currently trading at a valuation north of $6 billion with about $2.2 billion in long-term debt, it’s not the kind of target that would qualify as “smaller sized.”

To buy over AMD, the company needs to be careful with patents involving Intel. Secondly, AMD is 20 percent owned by Mubadala Development Company, the investment arm of the Arab Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

So, will there be a merger & acquisition deal for AMD ? It is too early to tell.

Apple Launches Subscriptions on the App Store

CUPERTINO, California—February 15, 2011—Apple® today announced a new subscription service available to all publishers of content-based apps on the App Store℠, including magazines, newspapers, video, music, etc. This is the same innovative digital subscription billing service that Apple recently launched with News Corp.’s “The Daily” app.

Subscriptions purchased from within the App Store will be sold using the same App Store billing system that has been used to buy billions of apps and In-App Purchases. Publishers set the price and length of subscription (weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly). Then with one-click, customers pick the length of subscription and are automatically charged based on their chosen length of commitment (weekly, monthly, etc.). Customers can review and manage all of their subscriptions from their personal account page, including canceling the automatic renewal of a subscription. Apple processes all payments, keeping the same 30 percent share that it does today for other In-App Purchases.

“Our philosophy is simple—when Apple brings a new subscriber to the app, Apple earns a 30 percent share; when the publisher brings an existing or new subscriber to the app, the publisher keeps 100 percent and Apple earns nothing,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “All we require is that, if a publisher is making a subscription offer outside of the app, the same (or better) offer be made inside the app, so that customers can easily subscribe with one-click right in the app. We believe that this innovative subscription service will provide publishers with a brand new opportunity to expand digital access to their content onto the iPad, iPod touch and iPhone, delighting both new and existing subscribers.”

Publishers who use Apple’s subscription service in their app can also leverage other methods for acquiring digital subscribers outside of the app. For example, publishers can sell digital subscriptions on their web sites, or can choose to provide free access to existing subscribers. Since Apple is not involved in these transactions, there is no revenue sharing or exchange of customer information with Apple. Publishers must provide their own authentication process inside the app for subscribers that have signed up outside of the app. However, Apple does require that if a publisher chooses to sell a digital subscription separately outside of the app, that same subscription offer must be made available, at the same price or less, to customers who wish to subscribe from within the app. In addition, publishers may no longer provide links in their apps (to a web site, for example) which allow the customer to purchase content or subscriptions outside of the app.

Protecting customer privacy is a key feature of all App Store transactions. Customers purchasing a subscription through the App Store will be given the option of providing the publisher with their name, email address and zip code when they subscribe. The use of such information will be governed by the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple’s. Publishers may seek additional information from App Store customers provided those customers are given a clear choice, and are informed that any additional information will be handled under the publisher’s privacy policy rather than Apple’s.

WAC is an application delivery center with applications submitted by global developers. ASUS Showcases Seamless Mobility at Mobile World Congress 2011
Tablet computers, smartphones and cloud-based services offer mobile users exciting and innovative ways to access data on the move
