Gigabyte appreciation dinner at Intercontinental Hotel Singapore highlights
bluetooth 31 Aug 2012 [5 pages]

Gigabyte held it’s appreciation dinner at Intercontinental Hotel Singapore to thank it’s distributor CDL Trading, retailers and media for their support. The drizzle and ongoing Comex trade show didn’t stop the retailers to take time off to attend the event.

Before dinner commences, the Gigabyte team gave the crowd a recap of their milestones and tell us more about their upcoming plans. During the dinner, we were also treated to a surprise performance. (see video on next page).

Gigabyte shares their motherboard market status. In the past they emphasised on enthusiast market e.g. overclockers and gamers. In 2012, Gigabyte will push a new range of Enthusiast Prosumers products. [See exhibits on page 2]

This new segment targets targeted Professional users or SOHO that works at home that requires workstation power. For example, animators, recording studio and video processing requires this sort of power.

X79S-UP5 WIFI is a workstation motherboard. There are also 3 Intel thunderbolt series boards Z77X-UP5TH, Z77XUP4th and Z77MX-D3HTH. There is also 3 high end media pc boards Z77X/H77X-WIFI.

X79S-UP5 WIFI is a socket LGA2011 intel chipset C606 that you can use a Xeon processor. Low end XEON processor are cheaper than some core i7.

It has 4x DDR3 and ECC memory support, it also has SAS on board and 8 SAS or SATA drive in RAID for speed and performance. It support NVIDIA Quardro and AMD Fire pro.

DIY a workstation is cheaper than buying a branded box.

Gigabyte also emphasised on the Thunderbolt. They are the first to support dual Thunderbolt ports on board. So, you can connect up to 6 devices each, a total 12 devices + 2 monitors can be supported on board.

It can support tri monitor support, one from HDMI and 2 from Thunderbolt.

As for the Z77/H77 Mini ITX boards, it supports Dual LAN. It has dual HDMI port, possibly one connecting to Amplifier and the other to projector.

It also supports WiDi, allowing your to wireless transfer your HD streams to a WiDi receiver in another room.

With Dual LAN, you can do teaming or use it as a Router running NAS.

At the end of the tech session, Hunter gave an explanation about Windows 8 Readiness.

Do you need 64MB BIOS Rom for Windows 8. No. You don’t require that.

Other companies are using different bios codes that is too big. Microsoft never requires 64Mb BIOS ROM.

WHich boards will not pass Win 8 Logo. Older generation G41, 760G, D525/D525 E350N will not pass due to chipset limitation.

Do you need UEFI BIOS to install WIN 8. Legacy BIOS boards can run Windows 8.

Do you need UEFI BIOS to pass Win 8 logo ? Yes it is required.

Kingston Helps Drive Big Data and Virtualization Initiatives with New SSDNow E100 Enterprise SSD

Kingston Helps Drive Big Data and Virtualization Initiatives with New SSDNow E100 Enterprise SSD
• New Enterprise-Class SSD Drives Offer 10X Gains in Endurance and Reliability;
• Expansion of Industry Leading SSD Family From Client Through Enterprise
• Helps Organizations Maximize Database Performance, Safeguard Data and Save on Power Costs

Hsinchu, Taiwan – August 28, 2012 — Kingston, the independent world leader in memory products, today announced the SSDNow E100 SSD, the company’s new enterprise-class solid state drive (SSD). The new drive enables enterprises to accommodate the performance demands required in support of big data and virtualization initiatives. The new Kingston E100 SSD achieves up to 10X improvements in endurance and reliability over client SSDs on existing hardware, while drastically reducing the physical footprint as significantly fewer SSDs are needed to handle the tasks of many traditional hard-disk drives (HDD).

The performance and processing requirements required in the rapid analysis of massive data sets and large collections of virtual systems have pushed many servers far beyond their breaking point. The next generation E100 SSD provides vastly higher IOPS compared to HDDs, dramatically reducing processing bottlenecks, computer latency and physical system limitations.

In a recent virtualized database performance test that compared Kingston’s Enterprise SSD with traditional HDDs, the review “found that replacing a solution consisting of a server with an external chassis containing 24 HDDs with only six internal SSDs increased total database performance by up to 91.8 percent.” The amount of power consumed “while idle and while running database workloads for both revealed that Kingston’s SSDs used up to 51.0 percent less power than the HDDs, and increased performance per watt by a staggering 184.2 percent.”

“Companies worldwide have come to depend on Kingston server memory for reliability and performance,” said Nathan Su, Flash Memory Sales Director, APAC Region, Kingston. “We are proud to introduce the SSDNow E100 enterprise-class SSD to help organizations handle such initiatives as big data and virtualized environments. The drive’s higher endurance and reliability, along with higher IOPS make it an integral part of a datacenter where uninterrupted 24/7 operation is mission critical.”

The new enterprise-class SSDNow E100 SSD is shipping immediately and is available in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB capacities. It is backed by a three-year warranty and free technical support.

Super Hi-Vision 8K TV standard approved by UN agency

Posted on 25 August 2012 by

Looks like HD broadcast in 1920×1080 is going into oblivion. According to BBC News, 8K broadcasts in the resolution of 7,680 by 4,320 pixels – roughly the equivalent of a 32 megapixel photo is being approved by UN Agency.

That is 16 times as sharp as current HD TVs offering about 2MP resolutions.

Japanese broadcaster NHK showed off the technology in London during the Olympics, where audiences said it gave them a sense of being at the events.

The firm has developed three cameras that can captures the higher resolution – which it calls Super Hi-Vision – at 120 frames per second.

By contrast the BBC currently broadcasts HD TV programmes at 25 fps.

Samsung fined for infringing Apple mobile patents

Posted on 25 August 2012 by

Apple won a jury verdict of more than $1.05 billion against Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) after a finding that Samsung infringed six of seven patents for mobile devices in the first lawsuit to go before a U.S. jury.

Apple, sued Samsung in April 2011, and Samsung countersued each other in the U.K., Australia and South Korea. Apple sought $2.5 billion to $2.75 billion for its claims that Suwon, South Korea- based Samsung infringed four design patents and three software patents in copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung’s demand for as much as $421.8 million in royalties was based on claims that Apple infringed five patents.

Apple also wants to make permanent a preliminary ban it won on U.S. sales of a Samsung tablet computer and extend the ban to Samsung smartphones. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh, who presided over the San Jose trial, would decide that question herself without the jury.

For the global roll-out, the Optimus Vu: will be equipped with NVIDIA® Tegra® 3 mobile processor, the super 4-PLUS-1™ quad-core with 5th battery-saver core, that offers a superb balance of performance and power requirements. 4 cores are used for high performance tasks such as games and multitasking. For voice call, email, music and video playback, only 5th battery-saver core is enabled and it consumes very less power.

When paired with the high-resolution 5-inch, 4:3 ratio IPS display, the Optimus Vu: becomes something special –- a device that’s both pocketable and spacious. The Optimus Vu: will come with an upgraded version of QuickMemo™ and Notebook, two features which make great use of the large display real estate.

“The different form factor makes Optimus Vu: unique even in the 5-inch smartphone category which we expect will catch on once they become more widely available,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

The motherboard housing or shroud protects against damage to the delicate components and parts while acting as an umbrella to cooling systems (heatsinks and heatpipes). Worried about overheating? The exhaust vents allow air to escape and store unit fans, if necessary.

This model is named X79R-AX Stealth an Intel X79 powered motherboard. The design does looks like a stealth fighter. From the looks out of it, it definitely looks very similar to the ASUS Sabertooth.

ASUS DSL-N55U Gigabit ADSL Modem Router Delivers Dual-Band 600Mbps

Posted on 15 August 2012 by

ASUS DSL-N55U Gigabit ADSL Modem Router Delivers Dual-Band 600Mbps

Designed for expansion and combining functions for great convenience, this flagship dual-CPU gateway accelerates dual-band networking with three external antennas

Singapore (March 5, 2012) the ASUS DSL-N55U utilizes a powerful tri-antenna, dual-CPU design that offers the complete benefit of ADSL modem and router features in one streamlined and easy to use device. It supports simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz transmission at up to 600Mbps, making it an ideal choice for power users, gamers, and consumers who stream HD media regularly. Quick and simple installation gets users online complication-free, while two USB ports afford multi-role usability as a file, media, and printer server.

Two dedicated devices in one at twice the speed

Equipped with two discrete CPUs, the DSL-N55U carries out both modem and router duties in wired and wireless modes. It thus saves users the space, energy requirements, and cost of maintaining a separate ADSL modem and router. With its integrated home gateway design, the tri-antenna DSL-N55U works in dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies simultaneously, giving users access to 300Mbps per band, or a total of 600Mbps in bandwidth. The 2.4GHz band can be used for normal online tasks such as web browsing, email, and social networking, while the cleaner and less congested 5GHz band remains free for intense applications such as online multiplayer gaming and HD multimedia streaming. The DSL-N55U supports up to 300,000 concurrent data sessions, similar to other high end network products from ASUS. It therefore outperforms basic modem routers by up to a factor of 20. The three antennas combine with exclusive ASUS Ai Radar signal enhancement technology, detecting local conditions and the positions of connected devices to ensure the best possible transmission quality. Ai Radar extends coverage range by overcoming obstacles and sources of interference, and results in a more reliable signal.

EZ UI delivers ease of installation and use

The ASUS EZ UI interface auto-detects ISP settings, so a connection can be established in seconds. Users simply follow several on-screen instructions to configure their home network, with no disc or manual required. The DSL-N55U takes out the complexity from modem and router setup, and offers users the full benefit of its features within minutes of first opening the box. ASUS plans to incorporate its ASUSWRT firmware into the DSL-N55U via a live upgrade in April, offering access to multiple SSIDs, IPv6, 3G sharing, and the Download Master web-based interface. ASUSWRT was previously incorporated into the ASUS RT-N66U.

Dual USB ports enable extensive expandability

With the standardized accessibility of USB, the DSL-N55U can transform instantly into a file, media, or printer server for even greater utility and multi-role value. It comes fully DLNA-compatible for seamless integration with a variety of devices, from game consoles to set top boxes. Powered USB also serves to recharge portable devices such as smartphones and tablets.

Turbo NAT: hardware network address translation

Wired connections reach maximum speeds in concurrent operation with Wi-Fi to guarantee the smoothest online experiences. Dedicated Turbo NAT IP address resolution and packet control exceed software NAT capabilities, resulting in sustainable 900Mbps speeds. Working together, wired connections and wireless channels experience no performance drop, making the RT-N65U the fastest N750 router available and an extra-stable platform for continuous downloading and online multitasking.

Exclusive AiRadar signal shaping technology

To make the most of the enhanced speed of the RT-N65U, ASUS includes its proprietary AiRadar design, ensuring the strongest and most focused transmission possible. While improving connection stability, AiRadar also expands wireless coverage, which means the RT-N65U can easily support large home and office networks, as well as multi-floor locations.

Better sharing and productivity with twin SuperSpeed USB 3.0 ports

ASUS includes two USB 3.0 ports on the RT-N65U, instantly turning the router into a multi-function server. Users can apply it as an FTP, Samba, UPnP AV, and printer server, making better use of resources by sharing across different devices. The router can download content directly to USB storage with no PC required, helping users get more done with improved multitasking and time savings. The RT-N65U works with DLNA-compatible devices, and can be used as a foundation for a fast home entertainment setup. It also works as a 3G sharing enabler, allowing several devices to get online through a single cellular account while offering failover protection in the event of WAN connection failure.

Power functions and easy management

As with other recent ASUS routers, the exclusive ASUSWRT dashboard interface offers streamlined setup in just 30 seconds*, allowing users to get online quickly. It also provides extensive network monitoring and control, all with an intuitive graphical design that can be learned in minutes. Client management and one-click updates are included alongside several ASUS applications such as VPN Server, Download Master (24-hour downloading even post-shutdown), parental controls, and guest network supervision.
