Apple iOS 6.1.3 causes battery drain and slowness in app installation

Posted on 31 March 2013 by

Apple released iOS 6.1.3 a few days ago. Those who have been faithfully upgrading their iOS for every release will probably be fuming away during the holidays.

There were a handful of reports of battery drain with the new OS version.  Some other problems also surfaced. For example, app installation takes longer than before to complete.

According to some posts on Apple communities, they suggested turning off the cloud services. It seemed to have some success in reducing the battery drain.

If nothing really works, the best way is to have a backup of the files and do a clean restore of the OS and restore back the data.

So, are you facing any issues with your iDevice ? Share by commenting below :

Forcing Windows Phone 7.8 OS update on HTC Trophy 7
29 Mar 2013

A few days ago, we received an update notice on our LG E900 also known as LG Optimus 7, the first generation Windows 7 phone. The update took almost an hour or so to bring us from Windows 7.5 to Windows 7.8.

Before the actual OS upgrade to Windows 7.8, there were a number of interim updates made to Windows 7.5 which was not made available before. It went through 5 steps to the final build.
Build 8779.8 -> 8783.12 -> 8858.136 -> 8860.142 -> 8862.144

As LG and Microsoft already pushed out their updates, we tried to see if HTC trophy 7 gets any love. To our disbelief, there were no updates available.

I did a search on the net and discovered that the old trick that we used to update to NoDo is able to trick the servers to push down the updates. We did it again and was successful to get it updated to the latest OS.

The trick is to unplug your network cable or USB network adapter at the 6 second after you click on the UPDATE button.

Here is how to go about it :

1.  Power on the HTC Trophy 7
2.  Switch the phone to AIRPLANE mode
3.  Connect up the USB cable and let it detect and install any drivers (if necessary).
4.  Run Zune
5.  Click Update and count till the 5 or 6 second
6.  Pull out the network cable or USB WiFi adaptor
7.  Wait for Zune to display “An update is found”. If it says “You are having the latest update”, proceed to step 5 and try it again.
8.  Plug your Ethernet cable or USB WiFi adaptor back to your system.
9.  Proceed with the update.

The update is automatic and do not need any human intervention. It will go through a number of updates depending on your latest OS update. Most users will start with Windows 7.5 as it was the last available update to most Trophy 7 users.

Below are the screen shots of the update process.

You can now resize the Live Tiles and get all the fixes applied to your HTC Trophy 7.

Intel Haswell processor pricing leaked on net before official release in June 2013

Posted on 25 March 2013 by

Although Haswell processors will be released in June, there’s pretty much nothing left that has not been leaked, including photo’s, benchmarks, specifications, new technology .. and now the prices as well. The flagship Haswell model, Core i7-4770K with unlocked multiplier, was already spotted this week in some stores in Europe. The Haswell processor can be also pre-ordered from several online stores in US. What’s more, the stores list a handful of other Haswell SKUs, including i5-4670K.

PCSuperStore currently has Core i5-4430, i5-4570, i5-4570S, i5-4670, i5-4670K, i7-4770, i7-4770K and i7-4770S on pre-order, with prices ranging from $197 to $368.

The table below shows how these prices stack up against prices of Ivy Bridge products from the same store:

Ivy Bridge model Current price Haswell Model Box part number Pre-order price Difference
Core i5-3330 $197.37 Core i5-4430 BX80646I54430 $197.86 0%
Core i5-3470 $205.23 Core i5-4570 BX80646I54570 $213.69 +4%
Core i5-3470S $195.59 Core i5-4570S BX80646I54570S $205.78 +5%
Core i5-3570 $210 Core i5-4670 BX80646I54670 $236.30 +13%
Core i5-3570K $234.18 Core i5-4670K BX80646I54670K $256.65 +10%
Core i7-3770 $302.85 Core i7-4770 BX80646I74770 $328.67 +9%
Core i7-3770K $339.86 Core i7-4770K BX80646I74770K $368.07 +8%
Core i7-3770S $302.74 Core i7-4770S BX80646I74770S $320.80 +6%

With one exception, all Haswell microprocessors are currently 4% – 13% more expensive than Ivy Bridge counterparts. Pre-order prices tend to drop a bit when it gets closer to launch, but at this point it is impossible to tell whether they will drop to Ivy Bridge level, or will be a few percent higher reports cpuworld.

Intel will continue to use LGA packaging till 1H 2015 for it’s processors

Intel will continue to use LGA packaging till 1H 2015 for it’s processors

According to a digitimes reports, LGA packaging will continue for Intel’s processors until 1H 2015 based on Intel’s latest roadmap for desktop platform.

This is assurance to motherboard manufacturers as it will have more time till 2015 as Intel transits from LGA to BGA packaging. With BGA packaging desktop users will not be able to upgrade BGA-packaged processors. So, you will probably end up with soldered on processors on motherboards.

On the other hand, 22nm Haswell processors to be launched in June 2013 and 14nm Skylake processors to be launched in 2015 will be LGA packaged, while entry-level 14nm Broadwell processors to be launched in 2014 will be BGA packaged, the sources noted.

South Korean Banks and TV stations under cyber attack ?

Posted on 20 March 2013 by

According to a news report by CNN, South Korea’s Banks and TV stations system outage could be due to a cyber attack from the North.

One television station, YTN, reported that 500 of its computers had been disabled by the outage. Another, KBS, said that its internal networks had been “paralyzed,” but that the problem didn’t prevent it from broadcasting live.

A third broadcaster, MBC, was also reportedly experiencing problems.

Customers of Shinhan Bank are unable to log into the lender’s website at the moment, the company said in a statement.

A second lender, Nonghyup Bank, said that it had disconnected some of its computers after they were infected with a virus. The bank said its main server was still functioning and able to carry out Internet transactions.

Police didn’t immediately provide a reason for the server problems.

March 18, 2013

18th March 2013, London, United Kingdom – Sony Mobile Communications (“Sony Mobile”) today announced two new Xperia smartphone models to join its 2013 line up – the Xperia SP and Xperia L. The Xperia SP delivers 4G LTE performance and an exceptional viewing experience, with a razor sharp HD screen housed in a beautiful design. The Xperia L provides class leading camera technology with HDR for both photos and videos complemented by a high quality screen.

Both the Xperia SP and Xperia L offer the best of Sony with stunning premium designs and a range of technologies including a high quality screen for the ultimate viewing experience; the latest camera features for impressive pictures and videos; NFC connectivity for One-touch function; Battery STAMINA Mode for extended battery life; and Sony’s signature media apps for enjoying photos, music, movies and games on the go.

“Xperia SP and Xperia L are ideally suited for those seeking stylish class-leading smartphones that don’t compromise on features”, said Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications. “Both of our new models benefit from Sony’s proven innovation and engineering expertise – whether you want to enjoy premium HD quality entertainment over 4G LTE on our mid-range Xperia SP or capture every moment in perfect detail with our more affordable Xperia L.”

Xperia SP – High Definition brilliance in a premium design

The Xperia SP utilises expertise from Sony’s BRAVIA® TV engineers to create its stunning 4.6” HD Reality Display for razor sharp pictures and superior brightness. The latest Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 delivers an even better viewing experience by analysing your content type and adjusting the image automatically, making it one of the most intelligent smartphone screens around. The engine will make the adjustment by adding new real-time contrast optimisation to the sharpness enhancement, high-quality colour management and noise reduction.

As well as delivering brilliant experiences, the Xperia SP looks beautiful too with a precision-crafted co-moulded aluminium frame, for a seamless look that is both sleek and solid. Adding to the unique design innovation is the colour-changing ‘transparent element’ with customisable illuminations which you can personalise to alert you of incoming calls and text messages. And you can even set the illuminations to pulse to the beat of your favourite music.

Xperia L – the perfect smartphone camera experience

The stylish and functional Xperia L features an 8 megapixel camera with Sony’s unique “Exmor RS for mobile” sensor technology for vivid colours and stunning clarity. HDR (High Dynamic Range) ensures that both your photos and videos are captured clearly, even at night or against a strong backlight. And with the dedicated camera key that goes from sleep to snap in just over a second even from a locked screen, this fast-capture camera phone will ensure that you’ll never miss another moment. Get the most out of your viewing experience with the high quality 4.3” FWVGA screen that is ideally suited to enjoy all of your content.

Sony entertainment on the go

Both Xperia SP and Xperia L benefit from Sony’s media applications offering a consistent entertainment experience across the range. The “WALKMAN”, “Album” and “Movies” apps, provide online and offline content through a single access point with new ways to enjoy and share that content. The “WALKMAN” application provides access to all your downloaded music, plus Music Unlimited* with over 18 million songs to explore from, and Facebook social integration.
