Samsung Galaxy S Running Stock Android

Posted on 22 August 2010 by bluetooth

Not to mention, most of the geeks prefer stock Android over the Sense. Stock is eveolving since its launch but the Sense is nearly the same as it was in the days of Windows Mobile. Well, if you have the hot phone of the era – the Samsung Galaxy S in your hands, you’d definitely love Stock Android on it. I rate Samsung’s TouchWiz a lot lower than the Sense. But that’s just me, you can differ.

Apparently, some Android modders/hackers also prefer Stock Android over TouchWiz. So they decided to run stock Android 2.1 on Samsung Galaxy S and they did! Just imagine the neat default Android interface. Makes life much easier. See the demo for yourself:

Looks cool eh? Really, I love it. There are some issues, as mentioned in the video. Camera isn’t working as yet. But they have achieved major milestones. Camera is not too far away. You’ll have to wait until all the bugs are fixed. You’ll then be treated with the fresh out of the oven Eclair for your Galaxy S

Nokia debuts ‘Touch and Type’ design with the latest Nokia X3

Espoo, Finland – In a move to continue driving innovation in its market leading mobile phone range, Nokia today unveils the super slim Nokia X3 Touch and Type, with a unique combination of a touch screen and traditional 12 button phone keypad.  As Nokia’s first ‘Touch and Type’ phone, the Nokia X3 allows people to tap quickly on the bright color touch screen, as well as enjoy the familiarity of the full keypad for quick fire text messages and phone calls.  Expected to be on sale in the third quarter, the Nokia X3 is expected to retail for approximately EUR 125, excluding taxes and subsidies.

“Innovation is not just a high-end game. The Nokia X3 is a great example of bringing new consumer value to lower price points,” said Mary McDowell, Executive Vice President of Mobile Phones at Nokia.

“With the Nokia X3 we are giving consumers the best of both worlds by combining a touch screen and a keypad in an affordable device. We have given people a larger screen with clear icons and menus plus kept critical keys such as the send and end keys. We’ve also added dedicated function keys for important links like music and text messaging,” she said.

“We have designed the Nokia X3 to be a touch and type device because typing is ideal for SMS and social networking where fast and frequent input is needed, while touch is ideal for functions such as setting alarms, smooth browsing and controlling applications like music and games.

“Our research tells us consumers who have invested years in becoming fast one-handed, one-thumb texters want to maintain their speedy edge for SMS, chat and instant messaging – yet enjoy the benefits of touch as well,” continued McDowell.

With its sleek and modern design coming in at a very thin 9.6mm – making it one of the slimmest Nokia phones ever – the Nokia X3 slips easily into the purse or the pocket, and looks the part with its brushed aluminum back cover which will come in five vibrant colors designed to suit any mood or wardrobe.

Despite its size, the Nokia X3 is jam-packed with features including 3G, WLAN, a music player and an FM radio.

Lovers of the snapshot and social networks will enjoy a great 5 megapixel camera with 4X digital zoom that can take both still and video images.

The Nokia X3 also features dedicated music and messaging keys allowing fast access to important Ovi services including social and entertainment applications.  In addition to Ovi Mail, people’s favorite consumer email and chat accounts can be pushed direct to the phone via Nokia Messaging.

With a gentle glide over the touch screen people can go online and get access to many services including thousands of apps from Ovi Store. In certain markets, the new phone will also be available with Ovi Music Unlimited, enabling the owner to access a virtually limitless range of the latest hit music that can be stored on the available 16GB memory card.

The Nokia X3 – affordable and accessible touch and type which is simple-to-use and beautifully designed. The Nokia X3 Touch and Type sits alongside the Nokia X3-00, a slider with strong music functionality, which was launched in September 2009.

The Nokia Mini Speaker MD-11. Pocket-sized speakers for big sound

Music lovers can boost the Nokia X3’s inbuilt speaker with some extra ‘oomph’ with the new MD-11, a light pocket-size speaker with great audio quality.   For even more fun, you can connect two for stereo sound – a great way to get the music out of your phone and enjoy with friends.  The Nokia Mini Speaker MD-11 is estimated to retail for EUR 25 excluding taxes and subsidies.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro Review @ ocworkbench

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini Pro Review
Bluetooth 3 Aug 2010

Android android everywhere. From 3.2″ to 3.8″ and 4.0″ capactive screens. Although this is the norm for most handsets, there isn’t something that is compact in the hands. The Xperia X10 mini pro , just like the Xperia X10 mini seems to fit into this special class for users with small hands and do not require the full screen functionality. Measuring only 2.55″, it comes with a 16,777,216 colour TFT,  240 x 320 pixels (QVGA) scratch resistant screen.

Designed along the lines of the Xperia X10 mini, the Xperia X10 mini pro comes with Android 1.6 preloaded and is upgradable to 2.1 later this year. The thickness is compromised because of the small compact keypad which slides out.

Although it is small, it has some good stuff built into it. Firstly is the customised User interface which hides you from the usual android screen. With the smaller screen, Sony Ericsson chose to use a 4 cornered UI to instantly access the applications available.  The TimeScape application also allows you to view Facebook™ status updates, friend’s photo,   inbox messages and friend requests, tweets, replies and direct messages from   people you follow on Twitter™. Incoming text and picture messages and missed calls can be seen within one screen based on timeline.

As a multimdeia device, it has a 5 megapixel AF camera with geo tagging. There is also video recording, photo video light, FM radio etc. You can also add more applications from the Android market.

Posted on 02 August 2010 by bluetooth

Comex has pulled it off again with a great jailbreak. Spirit v2.0 is now released and all devices can once again be jailbroken. This one is very easy to use. You don’t even need a guide. Here are the steps:
1) Load safari on your iphone
2) Type in http://jailbreakme.com
3) Slide to jailbreak
4) Wait and soon you have Cydia.
Just like spirit 1, this is a user-mode jailbreak which requires you to be able to load safari on the device.
I strongly urge you all to visit comex’s site and donate to him to help motivate him to find further jailbreaks in the future.
JailbreakMe
Note: there is an indication that on 4.0, you lose mms and facetime if you’re on an iphone 4. I recommend you update to 4.0.1 before jailbreaking. The facetime issue is being looked at now.

Apple iPhone 4 woes in Singapore and Hong Kong – FaceTime activation and death grip issues

Posted on 30 July 2010 by bluetooth

As Asian users gets their hands on the iPhone 4 today, more reports are coming out in various forums about the various problems surrounding the iPhone 4.

In Singapore, all 3 operators are selling the iPhone 4. It is reported that some oeprators have stocks witih default IOS 4.0 while some IOS 4.0.1

While this doesn’t really matter, it just shows that there are probably 2 batches of goods available.

It is said that some batches do experience the death grip problem. The signal indicator drops to 1 bar when you grip it by covering the antenna. If the bumper is used, the problem goes away. As there are two batches, it is unsure if those with 4.0.1 experience any problems.

In Hong Kong, operator CSL is alleged to benefit from the FaceTime activation by charging users from this service. CSL charges SMS fee of HKD 3 (in HK)or- 4  (roaming) everytime you run this feature.

So, you would probably be paying more unknowingly (if you don’t read T&C). So far, other operators do not require you to pay for this feature.

Facetime is a new feature of the iPhone 4 allowing you to do video conferencing between two users within the same wifi network.

Although M1 doesn’t offer free video streaming, it offers a slightly cheaper plan compared to the two other telcos.

For Iphone plans on Singtel. Users are offered SingTel AMPed to Enjoy unlimited music downloads on your PC and mobile at no data charge with SingTel AMPed. You can create and share your very own playlists, get pre-album releases, receive invites to exclusive showcases and more.

It also has MobileTV of selected channels from its suite of pay tv channels (no detail information about it).

iPhone 4 16GB price $480 $210 $0 $0

Conclusion

Out of the three telcos, M1 and Singtel has the cheapest handset pricing for it’s S$36-S$39 and S$56-S$58 plans. In terms of contract, you will pay slightly more for Starhub and Singtel but they offer unlimited music for Singtel Amped while both Starhub and Singtel offers some pay tv channels for entertainment.

As we have mentioned before, carriers that has streaming tv using HSPA+ tends to slow down the network especially during peak hours. So far M1 seems to have the fastest network as it is not choked down with video streams. This might change when they become a IPTV operator in the future.

So plain vanilla users who wants the best price plan and speed, I personally feel that M1 is the better choice of the 3. For best entertainment, Starhub would be the choice if you want to watch tv on the go with the best pay tv channels on your small screen. If you want free music, Singtel will be your choice.
