nokia tablet n1Bloomberg report that Nokia just announced a tablet under the Nokia branding. This seems like a new strategy after selling it’s mobile arm to Microsoft. It seems that Nokia probably has the go ahead with an Android tablet just like it did with Nokia X series, Android based entry level smartphones.

The 7.9-inch (20cm) N1 tablet has an aluminium body. It includes an Intel Corp. processor and the Lollipop version of Android. On top of that, it runs Nokia’s Z Launcher interface software, which predicts and highlights the apps consumers are likely to want based on time of day and location, according to a report by Bloomberg.
It will first be available in China in the first quarter of 2015 with an approximate price tag of US$250 (S$325), before being introduced to other markets.

Nokia N1’s reveal video:

Mr Sebastian Nystrom from Nokia’s technologies unit said today (Nov 18) that the former global mobile phone leader was “pleased to bring the Nokia brand back into consumers’ hands.”

Press Release

During the Slush 2014 conference in Finland on Tuesday, Nokia announced its return to the consumer devices business with the brand new Nokia N1 tablet. While Nokia’s deal with Microsoft prevents it from releasing any new smartphones for a period of time, tablets are apparently a different story entirely.

The N1 is a complete departure from anything Nokia has released in the past. In fact, it’s the polar opposite of Nokia’s most recent phones and tablets.

First and perhaps most importantly, the N1 runs Android 5.0 Lollipop. Z Launcher was a good indication that the new Nokia is moving away from Windows Phone, and now we can see exactly where Nokia’s consumer business is headed.

Designed and built by the Nokia Technologies division of Nokia, the N1 tablet’s housing is one piece of machined, anodized aluminum. The device features a 7.9-inch display and an overall size that rivals Apple’s iPad mini lineup, but at 6.9mm, the N1 is even thinner than Apple’s iPad mini 3, which is 7.5mm thick.

Also of note, the device is powered by a 64-bit quad-core Intel Atom Z3580 processor clocked at 2.4GHz. It also features 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, a universal insertion 2.0 USB C-type port and a 5,300 mAh battery that Nokia says will provide up to 9 hours of usage time per charge.

Nokia’s Android 5.0 Lollipop installation on the Nokia N1 is basically stock, but it ships with a special tablet version of the Z Launcher app that is exclusive to the N1. Buyers can disable it or install other launcher apps if they choose, but Z Launcher is great to have on a tablet, where users tend to install even more apps than they do on smartphones.

The Nokia N1 tablet will launch this coming February after Chinese New Year, and it will initially be available only in China. Nokia will then launch the tablet in Russia and several European markets in the months that follow, but the company currently has no plans to release the N1 in the United States.

In Singapore, the banks are all introducing various online payment systems, Maybank and StandardChartered both have such systems. Unfortunately, they don’t seemed to be well received. Anyway, popular instant chatting software maker SnapChat joins in the online payment using mobile. Just link up your debit card to your mobile number and you can easily debit or credit your bank account. It is not known if the SnapCash is available outside USA. Do let us know if you are successful in doing that. That will greatly reduce the foreign exchange costs involved.

Today is a big day for us – we are launching our first product created in partnership with another company. We’re huge fans of the folks at Square and have been big admirers of Square Cash since it launched – just type a dollar amount into the subject line of an email and send cash to friends. Genius!

We loved it so much that we wanted to create something with them that felt Snapchat-y. So we built a Snapcash prototype and shared it with the team at Square. Luckily for us, they were just as excited as we were and wanted to build it together.

The product you’re seeing today is fast, fun, and incredibly simple. After you enter your debit card, it’s securely stored by Square, who will swiftly process your payment and send cash directly to your friend’s bank account. Just swipe into chat, type the dollar sign, an amount (e.g. $11.25), and hit the green button.

We set out to make payments faster and more fun, but we also know that security is essential when you’re dealing with money. Square has a ton of experience in this area and our teams have been hard at work to make Snapcash a great experience for everyone. For now, Snapcash is available to Snapchatters in the United States who have a debit card and are 18 or older.

We hope you enjoy Snapcash as much as we do.

Happy Snapcash-ing!

Harold 14 Nov 2014

The Chinese telecom giant is definitely drumming up it’s branding in Singapore with it’s first flag ship store open at Plaza Singapura.

Somewhat different from the usual cold store front that most other brand stores, Huawei’s focus is on Work, Play and Home.

When you walk down the path, you will be greeted with a touchscreen wall which one can explore. At the centre is the game zone where parents with kids can leave them to play some interactive games at the Game Zone.

There is also a selfie corner which Huawei puts up with 40 different backgrounds for your selfies.

Is 5.5 inches big enough ? Probably not for some. Joining in the 6 inches club today is the Huawei Ascend Mate 7. Priced at SGD 749, this new flagship model features LTE Cat 6 support for fast download. It’s octo core also scales up performance and saves battery power. On top of that, it has a 360 degree finger print sensor to have an instant single touch fingerprint access to to to the phone.

huawei ascend 7 mate

Huawei today launched Ascend Mate7 at Huawei’s new flagship concept store in Singapore. Boasting a full HD 6-inch screen with FHD display for enhanced entertainment viewing, superior single-touch fingerprint technology and a lightning fast LTE Cat6 octa-core chipset for superior performance – the Ascend Mate7 is well positioned as an entertainment powerhouse. Its compact 7.9mm metallic body has been designed to provide increased comfort and style. Add to that a longer-lasting 4100 mAh battery and EMUI 3.0 and the Ascend Mate7 is set to dial up the mobile experience several notches, successfully delivering Huawei’s promise of bringing the latest technology and creating extraordinary experiences for consumers in Singapore.

“Today marks the arrival of our fastest and most compelling big-screen smartphone experience for consumers. It is a symbol of our relentless commitment to ‘Make it Possible’ for people everywhere to enjoy our premium quality products,” said Zhou Bin, CEO, Huawei Singapore. “The Huawei Ascend Mate7 is well positioned to lead the big-screen pack with smarter performance, impressive power efficiency and outstanding convenience with its superior single-touch fingerprint technology.” said Low Han Thong, Country Head, Huawei Device Singapore.

The Perfect Balance – Smarter Performance, Impressive Power Efficiency Boasting an octa-core architecture, Ascend Mate7 has an intelligent Huawei Kirin 925 processor made up of four large A15 1.8 GHz and four small A7 1.3 GHz chipsets which are activated in different configurations depending on the power needs of a specific application or function so that the device can be smarter with power management. Ascend Mate7 saves up to 50% of the battery by automatically using smaller A7 cores to power standard apps that consumers use at least 80% of the time, and kicks in the larger A15 during high-performance use such as gaming. The processor also automatically activates additional cores when it detects that 85% to 95% of a single core’s processing capability is being used. Featuring the fastest LTE Cat6 connectivity with download speeds of up to 300 Mbps, Ascend Mate7 enables HD movies to be downloaded in less than 30 seconds. Running on a high density 4100 mAh Li-Polymer battery, Ascend Mate7 managed to fit a huge battery in the slim body for more than two days of non-stop normal use. With Huawei’s proprietary power-saving technology, Ascend Mate7 provides three power saving modes – normal, smart, and ultra-power saving.
Outstanding Convenience

The Huawei Ascend Mate7, a 6-inch smartphone with instant single-touch fingerprint access that can start the phone instantaneously, putting an end to password fatigue. The 360 degree finger print sensor enables you to use it in any direction. It enables users to unlock the phone at least 80% faster than devices that use a slower sweeping recognition option. Located on the back of the handset and measuring 9.16mm x 9.16mm, the reader supports up to five sets of different fingerprint records which can be allocated to normal and guest modes, so a user can switch modes to enhance protection when securing private folders, applications, or payment information. It has a higher 508PPI ratio for enhanced reader accuracy so there’s no need to swipe repeatedly before being able to unlock the device – even with wet fingers or under light rain conditions. ARM TrustZone also stores encrypted data of the fingerprint within the chipset for better protection by SecureOS, and prevents direct access by third-parties.

Style and Substance A rare find for smartphones of this size, Ascend Mate7 is made up of more than 95% metal and features an interior structure made of a strong aluminum alloy for superior heat reduction. At only 7.9mm slim and weighing 185g, it has an ergonomically curved back for easier operation with just one hand and an ultra-narrow 2.9mm bezel that delivers a compelling screen-to-body ratio of 83%. Ascend Mate7 comes in three chic colors, moonlight silver, obsidian black. With a 6-inch FHD in-cell LTPS display that consumes less power and JDI Nega-NEO technology for an impressive 1500:1 high contrast ratio, Ascend Mate7 delivers incredibly sharp images. It has a 13MP rear-facing camera to capture better party photos in low lighting with Sony’s 4th generation BSI sensor and f/2.0 aperture. In addition, the 5MP front-facing camera adopts the industry-leading 5P non-spherical lens for higher definition and less image distortion.

Intuitive Simplicity
Ascend Mate7 launches with EMUI 3.0, the new version of Huawei’s intuitive user interface that makes it easier to operate with one hand and features a brand new look across the entire software interface. The new timeline design is used extensively throughout for enhanced consistency and usability across various apps. In addition, it actively addresses daily needs intuitively through practical and visually appealing design details, such as the convergence of key smartphone functions call, contact, and messaging, that can now be easily switched between with a single horizontal swipe.
The recommended retail price of standard Huawei Ascend Mate7 (2GB RAM and 16GB ROM) is S$749. It will be available in more than 30 countries/territories including Singapore, mainland China, Hong Kong, UK, Germany, Italy, France and Spain from Q3 2014, with other markets to follow

WhatsApp has just changed the design of it’s software with new blue ticks. The usual ticks we see in the corner of your messages have now changed into a glaringly bright blue. You can now know who is actually ignoring you or responding to your message.

According Whatsapps’ updated FAQ, the new ticks will affect not only personal chats, but also group chats and broadcast messages, when every participant has read your message. There are basically three tick signs:

  • One grey tick – the message is successfully sent
  • Two grey ticks – the message is successfully delivered to the recipient’s phone
  • Two blue ticks – the recipient has read your message

In the coming weeks and months, you’ll start seeing even more brand experience come to life across different channels as we transition from Nokia Lumia to Microsoft Lumia.

TuulaConversations caught up with Tuula Rytilä, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Phones at Microsoft, to discuss the changes.

Conversations: We have now started the transition from Nokia Lumia to Microsoft Lumia. Tell us about this change. What concrete changes are we going to see?

Tuula: This is a very exciting time for us and for Lumia products. You might have seen that in the last couple of months, we have already made some name changes to our apps to better reflect that these apps now come from Microsoft.

Our global and local websites are going through a transition as we speak and in the coming days our social channels will get a new name too – they will be called Microsoft Lumia. We would like to invite our Lumia fans to continue to follow us and always be up to speed with the latest device news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

This work continues across our devices, packaging and retail, to name a few. It’s all going as planned and we’re excited that our integration in to Microsoft continues to be on track.

Conversations: So when are we going to see the first Microsoft Lumia device?

Tuula: I wouldn’t comment on future product announcements, but what I can say is that that we are looking forward to unveiling a Microsoft Lumia device soon. This is of course a natural progression as all devices that once came from Nokia now come from Microsoft.

And, the Lumia promise of great phone experiences will remain the same as our customers have come to know and love. What’s more, Lumia phones will also showcase the best of Microsoft’s services such as Office, OneDrive, Skype and Bing to help customers with their work and personal lives.

Conversations: What does Lumia stand for?

Tuula: Microsoft was founded with the vision of putting a computer in every home and on every desk. With Lumia phones, Microsoft delivers the power of everyday mobile technology to everyone. We’ve introduced innovations such as advanced camera features, wireless charging, industry-leading design – and have worked to bring across our portfolio. All of that will continue. Microsoft remains committed to bringing amazing Lumia experiences with a strong portfolio of phones that offer something for everyone.

Plus, Lumia is now part of a compelling family of Microsoft products like Xbox, Windows and Surface along with a range of services such as Skype, Office and Bing.

Conversations: But does this mean Nokia Lumia smartphones that are currently in the market are obsolete?

Tuula: Of course not! Microsoft continues to sell and support the Nokia Lumia phones that are out in the market, such as the recently announced Lumia 830 and Lumia 730/735. As I said, the Lumia promise that you’ve come to experience and love will remain. We will continue to honor customer warranties and provide world-class care services as before.

Conversations: Will we see any additional Nokia phones from Microsoft?

Tuula: Yes! Microsoft will continue to sell Nokia-branded, entry-level category of phones, such as the Nokia 130. We have licensed the Nokia brand for such devices.

As Tuula mentioned, our online channels are going through some changes and this applies to the Conversations blog, too. In the coming weeks, we will move to our new home at Microsoft. We’ll keep you posted on these changes and hope you can make it to our housewarming party!

Amazon just launched the Amazon Fire TV Stick, a streaming device to rival Google’s Chromecast. At $19 for first 2 days normal price of $39, it’s a big price drop from Amazon’s $99 Fire set top box unveiled earlier this year. The price is slightly more expensive than Chromecast but cheaper than Roku $59 price tag.

For the price, subscribers will be able to stream everything from Netflix, WatchESPN to Hulu Plus, and of course Amazon Instant Video. Unlike Chromecast, it includes a remote control, though there’s also a mobile app for controlling it. There’s the ability to use voice search and Whispersync. It also supports gaming.

If you buy a Fire Stick you get a free month of the service. And the company wants Amazon Prime subscribers because once they’ve committed the $99 a year to get unlimited free shipping, they’re more likely to buy more stuff via the retailer.

M1 to offer iPhone Air 2 and iPad mini 3

SINGAPORE, 17 October 2014 – M1 Limited (M1) today announced that it will offer iPad Air 2 with Wi-Fi + Cellular and iPad mini 3 with Wi-Fi + Cellular later in October. M1 will offer these new iPads with a range of attractive data plans that will allow customers to connect to its ultrafast nationwide 4G network with speeds up to 150Mbps. For further details, please visit

Apple SIM

A preinstalled data-only SIM card has been inserted into the $499 iPad Air 2, and allows users to change carriers at the tap of a finger. It’s available in the U.S. on AT&T, Sprint and T Mobile, and in the U.K. on EE. Consumers can buy short-term data plans and can switch between the carriers to find the best deal.

Consumers would be able to change the carrier on the iPad Air 2 if the network cut out, but one analyst said the “knockout” aspect was the potential to kill data roaming charges. And it is this ability to change carriers that could prove to be a game changer for other Apple products such as the iPhone.

Apple said on its website that users “may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.”

“The final knockout is the fact that you can switch networks when roaming in the U.K. and U.S. right now, rather than paying expensive charges,” Ben Wood, chief of research at CCS Insight, told CNBC by phone

Loss of cellular service or ability to use Touch ID after updating to iOS 8.0.1 on iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus

We have a workaround for you if you have an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus and you lost cellular service and Touch ID functionality today after updating to iOS 8.0.1. You can reinstall iOS 8 through iTunes by following the instructions below. We are also preparing iOS 8.0.2 with a fix for the issue, and will release it as soon as it’s ready in the next few days.

Follow these steps to reinstall iOS 8.0.

  1. Make sure that you’re using the latest version of iTunes.
  2. Connect your iPhone to iTunes.
  3. Back up your iPhone in iTunes on your Mac or PC. iCloud backups won’t restore to earlier versions, including iOS 8.0.
  4. Download the file below that corresponds to your device:
  5. Select the file you just downloaded by doing one of these in iTunes:
    • Mac: Press the Option key and click Check for Update.
    • Windows: Press the Shift key and click Check for Update.
  6. Press Update to install iOS 8 on your iPhone.

The Health app won’t work in iOS 8 after these steps. It will be fixed in our upcoming iOS 8.0.2 software update.

Following the release of iOS 8.0.1 this morning, numerous of users found that their cellular service was disabled, reporting “No Service” messages after updating. Affected users also appear to be experiencing problems with Touch ID, which seems to be completely non-functional.

It appears that the issue is limited to users who have an iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6 Plus, but affected devices span several carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint in the United States. Rogers subscribers in Canada have reported issues, as have EE subscribers in the United Kingdom and Vodafone subscribers in Germany.

Restarting an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus does not fix cellular functionality, nor does attempting to use “Reset Network Settings,” but some users have reported that restoring iOS 8.0.1 via iTunes or doing the initial install from iTunes fixes the cellular connection issues.

Apple support has also recommended restoring iOS 8.0.1 via iTunes to fix the problem, as noted on Twitter and the MacRumors forums.

Users with an iPhone 4s, 5, 5s, or 5c have reported no issues, so iOS 8.0.1 is likely safe for those who do not have an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. iPad owners have also had no problems with the update.

Update: Apple has pulled iOS 8.0.1 from the Developer Center and it is also no longer available via an over-the-air download.

Update 2: Apple says that it is actively investigating reports of problems and has pulled iOS 8.0.1 in the meantime. The company also says that it will provide information as quickly as it can.

Update 3: It appears that option-clicking on an iOS 8 file in iTunes will allow users to fix the issue without a restore. iMore has outlined the process:

1. Download iOS 8 for iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus
2. Option (Mac) or Control (Windows) click on Update.
3. Choose the iOS 8 firmware file you downloaded in step 1.
4. Let iTunes do its thing

If you want to buy the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus but have no time to queue, the best way is to buy it online. The price may be slightly higher but if you want it quick, this is probably the best way. Before I forget, remember to use the best Credit card that can save you up to 6% for online orders :-)

Yesterday, Apple issued the iOS 8. iOS 8 brings along changes and improvements to usability. Although the improvements are welcomed on existing devices, there are bound to be compatibility issues with the new OS on the older devices and applications.

One such app is Facebook. Some reported issues include app hang, slow sluggish scroll performance etc. To resolve this issue, you can go to settings and reset all settings and reset network settings. (do not erase choose erase all content and settings).

Once that is done, try launching the app and see if the problem is resolved.

Anyway, today when we check out the apps, there were 12 updates available for our exisiting apps including twitter, dropbox, skype, facebook messenger, google etc.

Looks like these apps have been released to solve the compatibility issues faced with devices running iOS 8.

Sony just launched their Xperia Z3 a day ago and now we hear that the company seems to be in trouble with it’s smartphone business.

AP reports that SONY anticipates a loss of 230 billion yen ($2.15 billion) for the fiscal year that ends Mar 31, 2015 due to competition especially from low cost phone makers.

It is also For the first time since going public in 1958, the Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate canceled dividend payments for the half- and full-year.
“This is the very first time we ever eliminated a dividend,” said Sony’s president Kazuo Hirai. “For more than 50 years we always paid a dividend. The entire management takes this very seriously.”

The company intends to cut 15% of it’s mobile communication staff or 1000 people. The smartphone business has proven particularly tough for Sony being sandwiched by low cost China phones and high end innovative brands like Apple and Samsung.

“The Chinese smartphone manufacturers have made great strides and are expanding outside their own market, and this has caused a shift in the pricing,” he said. “Meanwhile, Apple and other manufacturers are launching strong, innovative products. The changes are very rapid and dramatic.”

Hirai said Sony expects a loss in its mobile business this year, but would return to profit by cutting costs and focusing on higher end devices. It is also positioning itself for future growth in smartphones and mobile technology.
