SANDISK INTRODUCES WORLD’S FASTEST 128GB SDXC CARD—IDEAL FOR CAPTURING FULL HD 3D VIDEOS AND HIGH-RESOLUTION PHOTOS

Can capture up to 10 hours of Full HD 3D video—enough capacity to film an entire day’s worth

Singapore, February 2, 2012

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), a global leader in flash memory storage solutions, today introduced the 128 gigabyte (GB)1 SanDisk Extreme® SDXCUHS-I card. The new card is ideal for photography enthusiasts capturing Full HD2 3D videos and high-resolution photos.

Video Recording Drives Growth of User-Generated Content

Advanced DSLR cameras and HD camcorders enable imaging enthusiasts to capture Full HD 1080p videos, even in 3D. According to IDC

“Consumer video capture is driving user-generated content creation,” said Chris Chute, research manager, worldwide digital imaging solutions, IDC. “This is the first year that more than half of all video captured will be in HD, and that number is set to reach nearly 80 percent in 2014. This trend highlights the need for memory cards that are fast enough to handle a massive data flow while offering enough capacity to store the resulting files.”

The 128GB SanDisk Extreme SDXC UHS-I card is based on the new Ultra High Speed (UHS-I) architecture and is designed to capture hours of top-quality video footage. The card’s UHS Speed Class 1 rating surpasses the recording requirements of demanding video use cases—from home movies captured on a DSLR to high-quality 3D footage.

“Five minutes of Full HD video can consume one gigabyte of storage space,” said Peter Mah, Regional Director, South East Asia and ANZ, SanDisk. “Our new SanDisk

Extreme SDXC card can capture up to ten hours of Full HD 3D video, enough to film an entire day’s worth.”

The SanDisk Extreme SDXC UHS-I card is designed to help imaging enthusiasts shoot like the pros, with the speed and capacity needed to capture not only high-quality videos but also high-resolution RAW+JPEG photos, which can reach up to 30 megabytes in size.

3, user-generated video from digital cameras and flash memory-equipped camcorders will increase more than 50 percent, from 4 exabytes in 2011 to 6.8 exabytes in 2014.

Faster Shot-to-Shot Performance, Faster File Transfers

The SanDisk Extreme SDXC UHS-I card features up to 45MB/sec read/write speeds

The card’s fast shot-to-shot performance lets photographers capture the images that matter most to them—whether using a point-and-shoot camera to take photos of a young child’s first steps or a DSLR to capture a high school track star racing across the finish line. The card’s fast file-transfer speed lets photographers offload an hour-long Full HD video in five minutes or a batch of 500 high-resolution photos in as little as one minute

The SanDisk Extreme SDXC UHS-I card is backed by SanDisk’s reputation for quality—professional photographers trust SanDisk. The card provides consumers with the reliability and durability they need to capture photos anytime, anywhere, and includes a built-in write-protect switch to help prevent accidental data loss. For added protection, the card includes a one-year downloadable offer for RescuePRO

4, enabling photographers to capture sequences of high-resolution photos using their camera’s burst mode and then quickly transfer the files to a computer. 5. ® Deluxe data recovery software, which can bring accidentally deleted images back to life.

Pricing and Availabilty

The 64GB and 128GB SanDisk Extreme SDXC UHS-I cards are shipping worldwide with MSRPs of SGD 219 and SGD 439 respectively.

Products are available at all SanDisk authorized retailers.

Running WhatsApp on a PC using a Android emulator

Posted on 30 January 2012 by bluetooth

I have been wondering where there is no WhatsApp, the cross mobile platform messenger on the PC. This is definitely something that I would want so that I can also message to my friends on mobile while i am on the PC.

Don’t fret as there is a way to do that. WhatsApp can be run on an Android emulator. YouWave for Android runs Android apps and app stores on your PC, no phone required. You can also download the usual apps via app stores within youwave.

Instead of running X86 android ISO file etc, youwave is the fastest way to run an Android virtual box on any PC. The best thing about it is that it is based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread. There is also support of Simulated SD card functionality – enables game saving, Saved State – enables fast restart and enables multi-player online games.

Other features include Dynamic rotating – phone-like instant response, Volume control buttons and retractable control panel. Check out the youtube video and test it yourself.

LG Germany brings wireless tethering to LG Optimus 7

Posted on 27 January 2012 by bluetooth

The LG E900 (Optimus 7) was amongst them but the firmware was a bit out of date and so, internet sharing was out of the question.

However, it looks like a new firmware update has been released in Italy for the LG Optimus 7 that enables it to activate the internet sharing feature and also find and connect to hidden wireless networks.

To get into specifics, the firmware for the LG Optimus 7 has been updated from 1.0.13.10 to 1.0.16.10 and the radio from 1.0.13.10 to 1.0.16.10. Although the version bump is not really all the high, at least we now have a new tethering-enabled Windows Phone device.

At this point, we don’t know if only Italy received this firmware update, but in any case, it’s entirely possible that it will be shipped to all other LG Optimus 7 devices around the world as soon as possible.

If the same holds true for all the Windows Phones that require a firmware update to enable tethering, then perhaps a major update for the rest of the devices is imminent.

So far, Microsoft hasn’t made any official statement, but as soon as we know more, we’ll keep you posted.

Meanwhile, we think it’s only a matter of time until all LG Optimus 7 devices will be update to the new firmware, so be on the lookout.

Apple iPhone emits sparks; first case in Singapore

Posted on 26 January 2012 by bluetooth

ChannelnewsAsia reports a first case of iPhone emitting sparks in Singapore. Mr Ong Z.M. was resting at home with his family on Tuesday night when the power supply tripped, putting out all his electrical appliances and plunging his house in darkness.

This happened after his 60-year-old father’s iPhone 4 emitted sparks, smoke and a loud explosive sound while it was being charged.

“I was so freaked out … There was a very loud ‘boom’ and the phone just blacked out. (The phone) was also very hot,” said Mr Ong, 35, who called the MediaCorp Hotline.

According to checks with SingTel, M1 and StarHub, Mr Ong’s experience is believed to be the first such reported case involving an iPhone here. Such cases have been reported overseas recently, with at least one incident linked to phone modification or the use of counterfeit batteries.

In November last year, a Brazilian’s iPhone 4, which was plugged in for an overnight charge, suddenly began sparking and emitting smoke.

Mr Ong, who works in sales, told TODAY that his father is a light user of the one-year-old phone and did not modify it in any way.

According to Mr Ong, SingTel replaced his father’s iPhone 4 for free.

Responding to TODAY’s queries, a SingTel spokesperson said customers could get their faulty iPhones replaced if it is a defect covered under the warranty or if the warranty is still valid. However, the spokesperson declined to comment whether it follows up with Apple on iPhone defects.

When contacted, Apple declined to comment on the possible causes of iPhones emitting sparks, smoke and a loud explosive sound while being charged.

Wintel tablet PCs may be priced from USD 599-899

Posted on 19 January 2012 by bluetooth

Wintel-based tablet PCs may be priced around 599 to 899 USD as both Intel and Microsoft are unwilling to drop their hardware and and sofrware costs. The impact would be pushing end consumers to buy cheaper tablets powered by other processors and OS.

The reason for not lowering the price is understandable. If tablets are priced too competitively, it will impact the sales of notebooks. Currently, plans for the new tablets will be powered by Intel Clover Trial-W and Windows 8 as the OS.

If Intel doesn’t reduce the pricing of their processors, manufacturers can choose ARM solutions from Nvidia, Qualcomm and Texas Instrument’s (TI’s) for their upcoming Windows 8 tablet PC to reduce their costs.

The ease of use of Windows 8 OS opens another revenue for tablet makers. It will compete head to head with iPad 3 (to be launched in March 2012) and current slate of tablets upgraded to run the Android 4.0.

LG AND INTEL SIGN STRATEGIC ALLIANCE FOR INTEL WIRELESS DISPLAY (WiDi) TECHNOLOGY

Posted on 16 December 2011 by bluetooth

LG AND INTEL SIGN STRATEGIC ALLIANCE FOR
INTEL WIRELESS DISPLAY (WiDi) TECHNOLOGY
LG and Intel Collaborate on Intel WiDi to Enhance Content
Accessibility of CINEMA 3D Smart TVs

SEOUL, Dec. 15, 2011 – LG Electronics (LG) and Intel entered into a strategic alliance to adopt and jointly promote Intel? Wireless Display (WiDi) technology. Intel WiDi will be embedded into next year’s LG CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, making them the first in the TV industry to feature Intel WiDi technology. Intel WiDi is a wireless connectivity inter-face which allows for instant, high-definition viewing of content stored in notebooks and other external mobile devices on large screen TVs, projectors or monitors.

“Through this strategic alliance, CINEMA 3D Smart TV users will be able to access a wider variety of content in a more convenient manner,” said Seog-ho Ro, Senior Vice President of LG Home Entertainment Company’s TV Business Unit. “Intel WiDi will be one of several features that will enhance the user convenience of our CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, further differentiating our products from the competition.”

“Intel is planning to expand Intel WiDi technology to various devices to provide con-sumers the seamless, smarter usage experience,” said Hee-Sung Lee, Country Manager of Intel Korea. “Through this collaboration with LG Electronics, LG CINEMA 3D Smart TV users could also benefit from Intel? WiDi without the need to purchase an ex-ternal adapter.”

Intel WiDi not only enables sharing of stored content, it also transfers onto CINEMA 3D Smart TVs, projectors and monitors a spectrum of online contents – such as YouTube videos and streaming TV shows from broadcast websites – that are accessible through notebooks and other mobile devices. Users can view such contents through the expan-sive and immersive high-definition CINEMA 3D display.

Like wired connectivity standards, such as HDMI and USB cables, Intel WiDi does not require an active wireless internet or WiFi connection to transfer content between exter-nal mobile devices and CINEMA 3D Smart TVs. Intel WiDi establishes a direct connec-tion between the WiFi chips embedded in the external mobile devices and the CINEMA 3D Smart TVs.

Furthermore, Intel WiDi does not tie down the mobile device during real-time content sharing. Users may perform other tasks on their notebooks and tablet PCs while simul-taneously streaming content to a CINEMA 3D Smart TV, projector or monitor.

LG and Intel would undertake co-marketing activities and Intel WiDi-enabled LG CINEMA 3D products will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next month in Las Vegas.

Apple iPad 3, with retina display, slated for February?

Posted on 14 December 2011 by bluetooth

According to a Citi analyst, Apple is prepping a next-generation iPad — likely called an iPad 3 — for a February release.

Such a device would be similar to the iPad 2, but include Apple’s high-resolution retina display technology found on the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S by doubling the iPad 3′s screen resolution, said analyst Richard Gardner in a research note first reported on by Business Insider and PCMag.

Gardner reportedly said that “several sources” told him that Apple could launch the iPad 3 as early as February, which would put its debut ahead of the first two generations of Apple’s tablet.

The first iPad hit stores in April 2010 after being unveiled the month before, and the iPad 2 was unveiled and released in March 2011.

The analyst also said that “there do not appear to be any significant technical hurdles remaining” to prevent the launch of a high-resolution iPad, which contradicts previous reports that fitting such a dense screen into an Apple tablet was one of the reasons Apple iPad 2 maintained the 1024 x 768 resolution of the first iPad.

Both the first iPad and iPad 2 displays have a pixel density of 132 pixels per inch (or ppi).

Apple’s iPhone 4 and 4S have what is classified as a retina display, with a resolution of 960 x 640 resolution, and a 326 ppi. Any display with a ppi of 300 or greater is said be so dense that pixels are indistinguishable from each other to the human eye at a distance of about 10 to 12 inches — and thus, those displays can be dubbed retina displays.

Tablets with higher screen resolution have been released by Apple rivals and more are on the way, but nothing close to a retina display tablet has surfaced yet — though Samsung has been working on it for months.

Among the most anticipated iPad competitors coming soon is the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, which features a screen resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.

Gardner also estimated that Apple would sell about 12 million to 13 million iPads in the final three months of this year.

The major sales competitor to Apple’s iPad is widely considered the Amazon Kindle Fire, which boasts much lower specs than iPads and Eee Pads. The research firm IHS iSuppli has estimated that Amazon will ship about 3.9 million Kindle Fire tablets before the end of the year.

In the past, Apple normally released new generations of its products about a year apart, though the iPad 2 did arrive 11 months after the first iPad, and recently the tech giant waited 16 months before releasing the iPhone 4S after the iPhone 4.

Apple is currently the leading tablet seller worldwide, with an estimated 65% share of the market.

SITEX 2011 : Aztech PlayXtreme Internet TV Hub makes it’s debut

Posted on 24 November 2011 by bluetooth

SITEX 2011 begins today. Although it is raining cats and dogs, it didn’t stop us from traveling almost an hour to the eastern Singapore to check out what is new at the show.

This year, the SITEX 2011 day 1 seems to be quite quiet. The event spans 3 halls and we don’t see the usual crowd as compared to last year.

Major brands were there, mostly selling notebooks. DIY components are no where to be seen as usual. In fact, the floods in Thailand has resulted in a shortage of HDD. The usual cut throat price of USB 3.0 portable HDD is no where to be seen.

Tablets were not everywhere. The big brands like Acer, Sony, Samsung, Asus, Viewsonic are all promoting their tablets. The pricing isn’t that cheaper than at the retail stores.

I have a hard time looking for HP cartridges too. There seems to be only one stall in the first hall that carries it. I got my combo pack at a 20% discounted price and a $5 NTUC voucher.

At one corner of the Hall 6 is Palladine, a local LCD TV manufacturer. They are showing off their new TV hub powered by Android. I gave it a try and is surprised to find Android marketplace on it on this Android 2.2 powered device. The remote control is cool too but I find it difficult to use it as a mouse over the air. It sells for S$199.

Next door is Aztech, another Singaporean company that is known these days for it’s powerplugs. They also have a TV box but it is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It is known as PlayXtreme. The bundle comes with HDMI, component and RCA cable. They have a very interesting remote control. It has a full QWERTY keypad on it for text entry. The launch price is S$179 which is slightly cheaper than the Palladine.

Below is a 3D Video of the tiny device that is hooked to the 50″ LCD TV.

On the next page, we test run the device.

The upgrade will also include additional features such as improved video recording and longer MP3 playback time. The upgrade will be available starting in Europe from the Open model in the week of November 21, followed by other markets until the end of the year.
