Google, Asustek co-brand 7-inch tablet PC to debut earliest in May

Posted on 10 March 2012 by bluetooth

Google, Asustek co-brand 7-inch tablet PC to debut earliest in May

Google and Asustek will unveil a 7-inch co-branded tablet PC as early as May, with the model targeting Amazon’s Kindle Fire and to be priced at US$199-249, according to industry sources.

In response, Asustek declined to comment.

Google sought Taiwan-based co-brand partners at the end of 2011, the sources noted. Among potential partners, HTC had strong design capability but insisted on directing development of the co-brand model and was unwilling to develop a low-price model to impair its brand image, while Acer did not have in-house R&D capability, the sources indicated. Google finally selected Asustek because of its ODM capability and good product quality, the sources claimed.

Asustek’s motivation for cooperating with Google is to win Google’s confidence to facilitate development of its Android-based devices, learn Google’s technology to develop software and content, as well as enter the tablet US market, the sources indicated.

The co-branded tablet PC is expected to be the first using Google Play Store, the sources noted.

Asustek on March 8 reported revenues of NT$27.598 billion (US$931 million) for February, growing 26.49% on month and 94.03% on year. January-February revenues of NT$49.417 billion hiked 45% on year.

Apple new iPad goes on sale in Singapore and Hong Kong on March 16 2012

Posted on 08 March 2012 by bluetooth

The new iPad retains it’s name ‘iPad’ and not iPad 3 or iPad HD as speculated. This new gadget will go on sale next week in the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong and several other countries.

The new iPad revealed on Wednesday has, as expected, a sharper screen at 2048×1536 higher than your full screen LCD TV and is power by a quad core A5X processor. What was more surprising was that the new features mean the tablet computer will be slightly thicker and heavier than the iPad 2, because it needs a larger battery to power the high-resolution screen.

The battery life remains the same: about 10 hours of use.

Prices aren’t changing from the previous models. They will start at US$499 (S$628). Versions capable of accessing cellular networks will cost US$629 to US$829.

The new iPad will go on sale March 16 in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Switzerland, United Kingdom and the US Virgin Islands. A week later, it will go on sale in 25 more countries.

Compared with the iPad 2, the new model features a higher-resolution camera on the back, similar to the one in the iPhone 4S.

The new iPad will be 9.4mm thick, or 0.37 inches. That compares with 8.8mm for the iPad 2. The weight is going up from 1.33 pounds (0.6kg) to 1.44 pounds (0.65kg) for the Wi-Fi-only model. The original iPad weighed 1.5 pounds (0.68kg).

Apple also confirmed that the new model will come in a version that can use Verizon Wireless’ and AT&T Inc’s ‘LTE’ wireless broadband networks. They offer speeds that are faster than the ’3G’ networks used by previous iPads, and current iPhones.

Apple is updating some of the software on the tablet to take advantage of the new features. For example, it’s introducing a version of the Mac’s iPhoto photo organisation and manipulation program for the iPad.

Apple also said it would start letting users store movies in its iCloud remote storage service, so they can be accessed through the Internet by PCs and Apple devices. It already lets users store photos, music and documents in the service.

Apple is also upgrading its Apple TV set-top box so it can play movies in 1080p, the highest-resolution commonly used video standard.

On the sideline, Apple is upgrading its Apple TV set-top box so that it can play movies in ’1080p’ format, the highest-resolution commonly used video standard. The small box, which comes with a remote, will still cost US$99 (S$125). The upgraded version will go on sale next week.

Microsoft is due to unveil a Beta version of Windows 8 at World Mobile Congress 2012 in Barcelona

Posted on 29 February 2012 by bluetooth

Microsoft has been revamping it’s Operating System to make it look alike the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Months ago, we have also tried out the Developer Preview of the new OS and was pleasantly surprised by the speed and ease of use.

Today, Microsoft will announce it’s Windows 8 beta, a more touch up compared to it’s previous Developer release at the Mobile World  Congress at Barcelona.

The system also is expected to enable users to easily back up their pictures, movies, music and other files on a Microsoft storage service called SkyDrive, which will compete against Apple’s iCloud.

In anticipation for the launch of Windows 8,  MSFT closing at $US31.35 on Monday in the US. The stock has gained about 21 per cent so far this year. By comparison, Apple’s stock has surged 30 per cent during the same period, while Google’s shares have dropped 6 per cent.

Here is our first look of the Developer Preview some 5 months ago. We expect the beta to bug fix the earlier version and should be ready for launch later this year.

Apple sets iPad 3 launch event for March 7 2012

Posted on 29 February 2012 by bluetooth

Apple today issued invitations to the media for an event next Wednesday, March 7, where it’s expected to launch the next iPad. Invitations were received by bloggers and reporters in the United States.

The news also confirmed earlier speculations that Apple would debut the new iPad 3 this March 7 which is the same day of the week Apple used to launch the original tablet in 2010 and last year’s iPad 2.

The invitation writes “We have something you really have to see. And touch,” read the invitation, which continues Apple’s tradition of keeping its invitation text cryptic. The background is a photo of iPad 3 with  a finger pointing to the Calendar app. It seems that the there won’t be a home button on the iPad 3.

Although specifications is not confirmed, the new iPad 3 might just sport a faster quad core processor, higher internal memory capacity. There might be 3 versions, LTE, 3G and WIFI only.

We shall see on March 7. Post your comments below.

HTC announces HTC One X, HTC One S, HTC One V at Mobile World Congress 2012 [video]

HTC One Series Unveiled

HTC One™ Highlighted by an Amazing Camera and Authentic Sound Experience

Unprecedented momentum for HTC One series – available beginning in April with broad global availability through more than 140 mobile operators and distributors.

BARCELONA, SPAIN – Mobile World Congress – February 26, 2012 – HTC, a global designer of smartphones, today unveiled its new HTC One series of smartphones that represent its most premium mobile experience with a new level of iconic design and amazing camera and authentic sound experience.

“The best moments in life are captured with a photo or remembered by a song, so it was key for the HTC One series to improve these emotional experiences with an amazing camera and authentic sound experience,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “We are very focused on creating a camera and audio experience customers will love and use often and we believe the HTC One series delivers this in a way never seen on a phone before.”

With HTC’s most premium experience, the HTC One series integrates Android 4.0 (ICS) with HTC Sense™ 4, the new version of HTC’s branded user experience that is introducing HTC ImageSense™, a new suite of camera and imaging features that set HTC One apart from other phones. HTC Sense 4 also includes broad enhancements to audio quality and simplifies how people listen to music on their phone.

Amazing Camera

With ImageSense HTC One rivals traditional digital cameras with improvements to every part of the camera, including the lens, the sensor, the software, and even integrating a new custom HTC ImageChip. These enhancements combine to deliver our fastest image capture, best image quality under adverse conditions and easiest interface that enables quick access to capturing stills and videos with side-by-side photo and video capture buttons.

Superfast Capture – HTC One dramatically reduces the time it takes to capture those key moments. In just 0.7 seconds you’re able to take a shot, and with a new superfast 0.2-seconds autofocus, continue to take nearly unlimited continuous shots simply by holding the shutter button.

Good photos in adverse conditions – HTC One delivers dramatic enhancements in image capture quality even in adverse conditions such as low light, no light or with bright backlighting. The f/2.0 lens on the HTC One X and HTC One S offers best-in-class performance, capturing 40 percent more light than the f/2.4 lenses available on other high-end phones. HTC One also includes HDR, a market-leading technology, for taking great photos even when there are varying levels of brightness.

Video Pic (Concurrent Video/Still Capture) – With Video Pic you capture a photo and shoot video at the same time. Now, while you’re shooting HD video, all you have to do is tap the shutter button and it snaps a high-resolution still photo while the video continues to shoot. You are also able to capture a photo frame from a previously recorded video.

Dropbox integrated with HTC Sense – HTC One gives you an easy way to save and share your photos and videos. HTC has integrated Dropbox into HTC Sense 4 enabling HTC One customers to get 25 gigabytes of free Dropbox space for two years. That’s enough to keep more than 10,000 high-quality photos. Dropbox is also integrated throughout HTC Sense 4, so it’s easy to edit, save and share your documents and other kinds of files.

Sharing your photos and more – HTC One gives you a new way to share your photos and videos. When you plug in HTC’s wireless Media Link HD* accessory into your TV’s HDMI port, you can easily share your photos, videos, or anything else on your phone with your friends, family or colleagues regardless of the television’s brand as long as it has HDMI.

Authentic Sound

With HTC One, Beats By Dr. Dre Audio™ integration is enabled for the first time across the entire experience for richer, more authentic sound whether you’re listening to your favorite music, watching a YouTube™ video or playing a game. HTC One also makes it easy to get and listen to your music on your phone with the built-in HTC Sync Manager software that automatically installs to your computer when connected. Once connected, it is easy to transfer songs, artists and playlists from your music library.

It includes a 1.5GHz Super 4-PLUS-1™ quad-core with an integrated fifth Battery Saver Core and a high-performance 12-Core NVIDIA® GPU. The HTC One also has an amazing 4.7-inch, 720p HD screen crafted from contoured Corning™ Gorilla Glass. HTC One X will also be available in select 4G LTE markets with a LTE-enabled Qualcomm Snapdragon S4™ processor with up to 1.5GHz dual-core CPU’s.

HTC One S

The HTC One S is for people who want a high-end smartphone in a more compact size. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with up to 1.5GHz dual-core CPU’s. Nokia advances on its new strategic direction, rolls out range of new mobile devices and services

- New Nokia Lumia 610, the most affordable Lumia, an ideal introduction to Windows Phone
- Award-winning Nokia Lumia 900 being made available in various markets outside the U.S.
- Nokia PureView elevates industry standard in smartphone imaging
- New Asha feature phones and services grow increasingly ‘smarter’

Barcelona, Spain – Nokia today introduced a range of new products, services and partnerships at Mobile World Congress, setting the pace for 2012 and demonstrating rapid execution of its new strategic direction. The new strategy already has resulted in the adoption of Windows Phone as Nokia’s primary smartphone platform, major changes to its feature phones, and additional emphasis on location-based services with the launch of its Location & Commerce business.

“One year ago, we shared that Nokia was embarking on a new journey to build great mobile devices,” said Stephen Elop, president and CEO of Nokia. “Today, with our fourth Lumia device, smarter mobile phones and an array of new services, we are demonstrating that we can change the clock speed of Nokia.”

Lumia portfolio extends, availability expands
Nokia has extended the range of products with Windows Phone by introducing the Nokia Lumia 610, the most affordable Lumia yet, as well as targeting availability of the widely acclaimed Lumia 900 to additional markets beyond the U.S.

Aimed at young people who want an affordable introduction to Lumia and Windows Phone, the Nokia Lumia 610 provides easy access to social networks, web browsing, music, games, navigation and tens of thousands of apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace. It comes in four vibrant colors and will cost just €189, before taxes or subsidies, and is expected to begin shipping in the second quarter of 2012.

The Nokia Lumia 900, which launched in January as Nokia’s first LTE-enabled smartphone, will now be available in Dual Carrier HSPA for up 42.2 Mbps. The superior content experience of the phone’s 4.3 inch ClearBlack AMOLED display and large capacity battery will be available to more countries around the world.

Nokia announced Nokia Reading providing a single, integrated reading hub experience. Nokia Reading makes it easier and faster to enjoy news, books, and audio books including an extensive catalogue of local language reading material and the ability to access content offline.

The announcements cap a year in which Nokia introduced the Lumia 710, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 to critical acclaim and ahead of schedule.

New era in smartphone imaging starts with Nokia 808 PureView
Nokia also today ushered in a new era in high end smartphone imaging. The Nokia 808 PureView is the first smartphone to feature exclusive Nokia PureView imaging technologies that will enable a range of high-end imaging experiences into Nokia products over the coming years. The Nokia 808 PureView combines a large, high-resolution 41-megapixel sensor, Carl Zeiss optics and Nokia-developed pixel over-sampling technology. This means incredibly sharp, detailed images, superior low light performance and the capability to save images in compact file sizes for sharing in email, MMS and on social networks.

The Nokia 808 PureView also includes Nokia Rich Recording for CD-like quality audio recording, full HD 1080p video recording and playback, and exclusive Dolby Headphone technology to transform any stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones.

Asha ignites smarter feature phones
Nokia is further blurring the line between feature phones and smartphones, launching three new Asha devices for people who want to work, learn and play. Developed for urban consumers and entrepreneurs, the Nokia Asha 302 is a premium QWERTY device. It delivers a mobile office experience with push email and calendar, and contacts synchronization under the Mail for Exchange support – a first for Nokia Series 40 devices.

Designed for easy access to social networks, the Nokia Asha 202 and 203 bring touchscreens to volume-priced products and a pack of 40 free Electronic Arts games. The Asha 202 also features Nokia’s Easy Swap Dual SIM technology, allowing people to simply swap between tariffs and get the best value from carriers.

Nokia is also differentiating itself by updating its popular Life Tools service, now called Nokia Life, that provides life-enhancing information across the range of Nokia Series 30 and Series 40 products, including the new Asha 202 and Asha 203. People in India, China, Indonesia and Nigeria will benefit from life skills, parenting, education, agriculture and entertainment services, delivered via SMS.

The new Asha devices complement the Nokia Asha range that is available now in more than 100 markets globally.

Going further, faster
In location-based services, Nokia and Groupon plan to offer market-leading location-sensitive discounts and deals. Nokia is also announcing a new version of Nokia Drive for Windows Phone that will come with full offline support for turn-by-turn navigation. Moving forward, Nokia Drive will also remember a personal commute, give advance traffic notice and automatically re-route to avoid jams.

Additionally, Nokia plans to release the Windows Phone version of Nokia Transport for door-to-door, underground, tram, suburban train, and bus directions in more than 500 cities and 45 countries.

NVIDIA Delivers Quad-Core Performance in New HTC One X

BARCELONA, SPAIN, Feb 26, 2012 –NVIDIA today announced that its NVIDIA(R) Tegra(R) 3 mobile processor, the world’s only 4-PLUS-1(TM) quad-core processor, is powering the new HTC One(TM) X unveiled at Mobile World Congress. The smartphone represents the first collaboration between the two companies.

The NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor features a unique 4-PLUS-1 quad-core architecture that delivers outstanding performance and exceptional battery life. It does this by progressively powering on each of its four main CPU cores as they’re needed for increasingly more demanding tasks, and relying on its fifth battery saver core for less demanding tasks and active standby mode. Tegra 3′s 12-core GPU enables consumers to enjoy console-quality gaming, as well as 1080p HD video capabilities unlike anything seen before on a smartphone.

“The HTC One X with Tegra 3 provides an experience that consumers will absolutely love,” said Kouji Kodera, Chief Product Officer at HTC. “We knew our next super phone had to be fantastic. That’s why we chose to work with NVIDIA.”

“HTC has quickly become one of the world’s most innovative makers of mobile devices,” said Michael Rayfield, General Manager of the Mobile business at NVIDIA. “The HTC One X exemplifies what we’ve come to expect from one of the world’s top phone makers.”

Samsung Galaxy Tab ‘GT-P5100′ pictured alongside two unannounced smartphones

Samsung might not have a press conference scheduled for this year’s Mobile World Congress, but the South Korea-based technology giant still has a handful of new devices that are expected to be unveiled during the show. Among them is a new Samsung Galaxy Tab code-named GT-P5100, and German tech blog BestBoyz claims to have obtained several pictures of the unannounced tablet. Not much can be gleaned from the images, but BestBoyZ says the tablet features a 10-inch display and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. We can also see from the image above that the tablet will sport Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface on top of Android 4.0, and the design of the GT-P5100 looks very similar to the Galaxy Tab 10.1N. Could this be the high-definition slate we scooped back in December? Mobile World Congress kicks off in less than a day, so we’ll know soon enough. One more picture of the new tablet alongside two unannounced Samsung smartphones follows below.
