Samsung demonstrates N150, the first LTE netbook at Mobile World Congress

Posted on 17 February 2010 by bluetooth

February 16th, 2010, Barcelona, Spain – Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading provider of future mobile and IT
technology, is demonstrating the world’s first Long Term Evolution (LTE) netbook PC at Mobile World Congress 2010.
Samsung’s own in-house designed LTE modem chipset, Kalmia, enabled the development of a small form factor
netbook with LTE capability. Following the company’s latest deployment of a commercial LTE dongle, Samsung
reasserts its industry-leading position in next generation mobile technology with the largest line-up of devices.
Samsung demonstrates live video streaming via the company’s own LTE network equipment on the Samsung
netbook N150.The Samsung netbook N150 is currently available in market with HSPA 3G communications and WiFi
access and will become commercially available with LTE according to service schedule and market demand. The
inclusion of LTE will deliver high speed, low latency and ubiquitous connectivity to all users who require high-volume
data access whenever they want and wherever they are. For the first time, operators preparing for the deployment of
next generation networks can deliver high-powered products to showcase network strength and the true benefits to
end-users.
With its high-quality design and great value, the Samsung N150 offers users everything they need in a portable
netbook. The N150’s 10.1” anti-reflective LED display gives users fine-tuned images with the sharpest detail and
boldest colours, without the inconvenience of mirror effects under bright lights or in sunny weather. This energy-
efficient display also works with the N150’s optimized processing performance and Samsung’s proprietary-enhanced
battery life solution to deliver exceptional battery performance of up to 8.5 hours*.
Using the integrated Easy Resolution Manager tool, screen resolution can easily be changed if a program or game
needs to be viewed in 1024×768. Additional visual enhancements include an integrated Digital LiveCam for video-
conferencing or live messaging. An integrated webcam, internal microphone and headphone-out connection
also provide an easy and cost-effective way to stay in touch with friends and family using video-conferencing, live
messaging or VoIP telephony.
“The N150 is the smart choice to meet all your essential mobile computing needs with style,” said Kyu Uhm, Vice
President of Samsung IT Solutions Business.
He continued, “We see increasing demand for data services, regardless of whether the consumer is indoors, outside,
or even on the move. With our end-to-end Total Solution from core chipset to a variety of devices, we are providing
true value to our customers.”
Samsung has proven its leadership in next generation mobile technology and has a long history of involvement in the
3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Collaboration with groups of telecommunications associations to make a
globally applicable 3G and 4G standard is a natural progression for Samsung, who are also introducing the most up-
to-date LTE technology at the show.
Samsung’s public demonstration of Long Term Evolution (LTE) included a total solution from infrastructure to mobile
devices. In particular, Samsung has developed its own access and core networks, which support multi-vendor
interoperability. Besides the world’s first LTE embedded netbook PC, Samsung is also showcasing the dongle
type device GT-B3710. Samsung’s LTE solution is fully compliant with the latest 3GPP LTE Rel-8 standard. Initial
deployment of the service began in 2009 and active discussion and trial tests will continue in 2010.
Alongside the world’s first demonstration of the LTE netbook N150, Samsung also showcased an extensive line-up of
netbook and note PCs at the show including N210, N220 and NB30.

Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 7 Series at MWC2010

Posted on 15 February 2010 by bluetooth

BARCELONA, Spain — Feb. 15, 2010 — Today at Mobile World Congress 2010, Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer unveiled the next generation of Windows® Phones, Windows Phone 7 Series. With this new platform, Microsoft offers a fresh approach to phone software, distinguished by smart design and truly integrated experiences that bring to the surface the content people care about from the Web and applications. For the first time ever, Microsoft will bring together Xbox LIVE games and the Zune music and video experience on a mobile phone, exclusively on Windows Phone 7 Series. Partners have already started building phones; customers will be able to purchase the first phones in stores by holiday 2010.

“Today, I’m proud to introduce Windows Phone 7 Series, the next generation of Windows Phones,” said Steve Ballmer, chief executive officer at Microsoft. “In a crowded market filled with phones that look the same and do the same things, I challenged the team to deliver a different kind of mobile experience. Windows Phone 7 Series marks a turning point toward phones that truly reflect the speed of people’s lives and their need to connect to other people and all kinds of seamless experiences.”

    Designed for Life in Motion

With Windows Phone 7 Series, Microsoft takes a fundamentally different approach to phone software. Smart design begins with a new, holistic design system that informs every aspect of the phone, from its visually appealing layout and motion to its function and hardware integration. On the Start screen, dynamically updated “live tiles” show users real-time content directly, breaking the mold of static icons that serve as an intermediate step on the way to an application. Create a tile of a friend, and the user gains a readable, up-to-date view of a friend’s latest pictures and posts, just by glancing at Start.

Every Windows Phone 7 Series phone will come with a dedicated hardware button for Bing, providing one-click access to search from anywhere on the phone, while a special implementation of Bing search provides intent-specific results, delivering the most relevant Web or local results, depending on the type of query.

Windows Phone 7 Series creates an unrivaled set of integrated experiences on a phone through Windows Phone hubs. Hubs bring together related content from the Web, applications and services into a single view to simplify common tasks. Windows Phone 7 Series includes six hubs built on specific themes reflecting activities that matter most to people:

    • People. This hub delivers an engaging social experience by bringing together relevant content based on the person, including his or her live feeds from social networks and photos. It also provides a central place from which to post updates to Facebook and Windows Live in one step.

    • Pictures. This hub makes it easy to share pictures and video to a social network in one step. Windows Phone 7 Series also brings together a user’s photos by integrating with the Web and PC, making the phone the ideal place to view a person’s entire picture and video collection.

    • Games. This hub delivers the first and only official Xbox LIVE experience on a phone, including Xbox LIVE games, Spotlight feed and the ability to see a gamer’s avatar, Achievements and gamer profile. With more than 23 million active members around the world, Xbox LIVE unlocks a world of friends, games and entertainment on Xbox 360, and now also on Windows Phone 7 Series.

    • Music + Video. This hub creates an incredible media experience that brings the best of Zune, including content from a user’s PC, online music services and even a built-in FM radio into one simple place that is all about music and video. Users can turn their media experience into a social one with Zune Social on a PC and share their media recommendations with like-minded music lovers. The playback experience is rich and easy to navigate, and immerses the listener in the content.

    • Marketplace. This hub allows the user to easily discover and load the phone with certified applications and games.

    • Office. This hub brings the familiar experience of the world’s leading productivity software to the Windows Phone. With access to Office, OneNote and SharePoint Workspace all in one place, users can easily read, edit and share documents. With the additional power of Outlook Mobile, users stay productive and up to date while on the go.

    Availability

Partners from around the world have committed to include Windows Phone 7 Series in their portfolio plans. They include mobile operators AT&T, Deutsche Telekom AG, Orange, SFR, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, and manufacturers Dell, Garmin-Asus, HTC Corp., HP, LG, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba and Qualcomm Inc. The first phones will be available by holiday 2010. Customers who would like to receive additional information about Windows Phone 7 Series and be notified when it is available can register at http://www.windowsphone7series.com.

Visitors to Huawei’s booth (8A159, Hall 8) will experience the world’s fastest HSPA+ download peak speeds of 84Mb/s and uplink peak speeds of 11Mb/s.

Huawei forecasts that there will be a 1,000-fold increase in mobile broadband network traffic in the next decade, posing both a challenge, and an opportunity, for operators around the world. Driven by this rapid growth of mobile broadband, higher speed, lower latency, and better service experience has become the priority for end-users. Huawei’s HSPA+ solution greatly improves the end user’s mobile broadband experience when uploading materials, such as video conferencing, file sharing, and email.

In order to provide downlink data rates of up to 84Mb/s, Huawei’s HSPA+ solution is based on 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) Release 9 standards and combines higher order modulation (HOM) schemes (64QAM), multi-input multi-output (MIMO), and dual cell transmission. To realize the peak uplink data rates of up to 11Mb/s, Huawei adopts an Interference Cancellation solution, which doubles the speed on 3GPP Release 6 and minimizes intra-cell interference issues.

Wan Biao, President of Wireless, Huawei, said, “Our record-breaking data speeds showcase the potential of HSPA+ and demonstrate how Huawei’s solution can enable operators to provide consumers with an ever more attractive mobile broadband experience.”

Huawei plays an active role in HSPA+ development. In March 2009, Huawei deployed Asia Pacific’ s first 21Mb/s HSPA+ commercial network. In October 2009, Huawei announced plans to provide 28Mb/s HSPA+ commercial service in Singapore, and Huawei successfully demonstrated a 56Mb/s HSPA+ commercial solution in Beijing. As of 2009, Huawei helped 36 operators with HSPA+ network deployment, among which 20 were HSPA+ commercial networks and 16 were HSPA+ networks in deployment or in trial.

M1 successfully completes 100 Mbps data call on trial LTE network
Call used commercial LTE hardware and software from Nokia Siemens Networks

MobileOne (M1), the leading mobile operator in Singapore, has today successfully completed a 100 Mbps data call on its Long Term Evolution (LTE) trial network. This makes it the first South Asian operator to achieve this milestone on commercial LTE hardware and software. The call was made at M1’s flagship store in Singapore, where the operator is trialing and showcasing applications over LTE together with its partner Nokia Siemens Networks.

“I am delighted with the completion of today’s data call, which met our requirements for low latency, high speed, and reliability,” said Patrick Scodeller, chief technical officer at M1. “The ongoing trial will let us obtain firsthand experience of Nokia Siemens Networks’ commercially ready LTE hardware and software, based on its Flexi Multiradio base stations. Our network modernization contract with Nokia Siemens Networks represents the first steps in our evolution towards LTE, and this trial helps pave the way to faster and better quality mobile broadband services in the future.“

“LTE will not only enable a rich end-user experience but also help drive new business opportunities for operators like M1,” said Ricky Corker, head of Asia Pacific, Nokia Siemens Networks. “The technology is rapidly approaching commercial introduction in many markets, and trials such as these are proof of LTE’s potential to deliver fantastic mobile broadband.”

M1 will be showcasing High Definition (HD) TV streaming, as well as high-speed file download over an LTE network at its flagship store until end March 2010.

Garmin-Asus nüvifone™ A50: An Android™ Smartphone with More Location Technology Than Any Other Smartphone

Posted on 12 February 2010 by bluetooth

BARCELONA, Spain/February 11, 2010/Business Wire — Garmin-Asus, a co-branded alliance between Garmin® Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), and ASUSTeK® Computer Inc. (TAIEX: 2357), today announced the Garmin-Asus nüvifone A50, a touchscreen Android-powered smartphone with multiple location technologies and apps.  The A50 benefits from the personalization and enhanced features offered by the Android platform, and also includes Garmin navigation with turn-by-turn, voice prompted directions for use in a car or while walking. Location features are designed into virtually every function including email, text messaging, and photos. The A50 will be on display at the Garmin-Asus booth (Hall 8, #8B127) at Mobile World Congress, February 15-18, 2010.

“The A50 brings premium navigation features to the Android operating system, offering users a seamless location based experience along with access to the wealth of applications that the platform affords,” said Benson Lin, vice president and general manager of ASUS’ personal mobile devices business unit, handheld business group

“Location is relevant to everything you do,” said Cliff Pemble, Garmin’s president and COO. “The A50 integrates navigation and GPS functionality throughout the device, which gives customers the versatility and reliability they need as they navigate their day.”

The elegant and thin A50 has a 3.5-inch HVGA capacitive touchscreen display that incorporates a finger-friendly user interface. The QWERTY touchscreen keyboard makes it easy to send and receive messages, and predictive text helps customers type faster. It also comes with hardware features like 4GB internal storage, an expandable microSD card slot, and accelerometer so every screen can be viewed in portrait or landscape mode.

    Access to thousands of applications
The A50 integrates Google™ mobile services with one-click access to Google Search™ by voice, Google Maps™, Gmail™, YouTube™, calendar, contacts and Android Market™, where users can find more than 20,000 applications to expand and personalize their phone to fit their lifestyle.

    Powerful enterprise email capability
The A50 includes on-device sync with Microsoft Exchange server, with the ability to wirelessly synchronize contacts, calendar and enterprise email. Account setup is quick and easy, and in a few simple steps users will have their contacts, calendar and email ready to go.

High-sensitivity GPS receivers with Garmin navigation
The A50 receives its location (latitude and longitude) information from multiple sources including satellite, network-based and terrestrial sources.  These overlapping technologies ensure that A50 customers have the best location and navigation experience a smartphone can offer.

Garmin navigation is included and preloaded on the A50. Because maps are installed on the device, customers will not have to wait for third party maps to download from a server, nor will they lose their turn-by-turn, voice-prompted navigation if they are out of cell phone coverage. The A50 also has many of the same features as a high-end Garmin nüvi® navigation device such as lane assist with junction view that guides drivers to the correct lane for an approaching turn or exit and realistically displays road signs. Ready for pedestrian or automotive navigation out-of-the-box, the A50 includes a custom Garmin car mount and vehicle power cable.

The A50 also supports cityXplorer™ maps so that customers can plan and use routes that include public transit options such as bus, tramway, metro and suburban rail systems. cityXplorer content is available as an optional download for select cities. Thanks to the A50’s e-compass, customers will know their heading even when standing still.

In addition to Android Market, the A50 has preloaded, apps through Garmin-Asus’ connected services, which includes real-time, location-relevant information like weather, traffic, fuel prices, safety cameras, flight status,. Connected services information varies by country.

Customers also have access to Street View in Google Maps and 3D landmark images.

    Surf the web
With a powerful, multi-touch capable WebKit browser, the A50 allows users to browse the web at quick speeds and view streaming content. In addition, it automatically identifies location information embedded within web pages allowing the user to quickly navigate to the locations published on the world-wide web.

    Take quality photos
The A50 includes a three mega-pixel camera with auto-focus that automatically geotags images with an exact latitude and longitude reference of where the photo was taken.  Customers may then save the image so they can navigate back to the location, or email the geo-tagged image to friends.

    Availability
The Garmin-Asus nüvifone A50 is expected to be available in Europe in the first half of 2010. Specific availability and pricing details will be given in the future. Additional information about Garmin-Asus products is available at www.GarminAsus.com.

LG Electronics announced its LG Mini (LG GD880) 3.2″ phone

Posted on 09 February 2010 by bluetooth

GREAT THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES WITH NEW MINI PHONE FROM LG
Trendsetting Design and Superb Connectivity Make
Touchscreen Phone the Next “Must Have” Device

SINGAPORE, February 9, 2010 – LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in mobile communications, today announced its new LG Mini (LG GD880), a new smart phone that accentuates its trendsetting design with a full complement of intelligent features.

Expected to be available in Singapore in June, LG Mini will be the smallest and slimmest 3.2-inch full touchscreen phone on the market, making it the perfect handset for people who want all the communication features that today’s technology has to offer without the bulk and weight of a traditional fully-loaded handset.

“We developed the LG Mini in response to specific requests from consumers who were unhappy with current full touchscreen phones that are too bulky, too clunky and too expensive,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The easily pocketable LG Mini delivers great looks at a reasonable price, along with the trendy features that people want.”

Thanks to a slim, compact form factor made from the highest quality materials, the LG Mini easily slides in a shirt pocket or small handbag while still feeling reassuringly solid to the touch. Textured metal accents on the sides of the LG Mini add to the phone’s eye-catching looks without detracting from its overall simplicity. On the front, a large 3.2 inch touchscreen with an aspect ration of 16:9 extends all the way to the edge of the phone, giving it a finish that is as smooth as ice. In addition, a button-free face keeps the LG Mini simple and sleek.

But the LG Mini has much more than just great looks. Besides a range of staple features such as speedy web browsing and fast push email, the LG Mini also includes several unique aspects, including Social Network Connect, which makes keeping in touch with online friends even easier than on a desktop PC. Popular social networks such as Facebook and Twitter are instantly accessible through built-in applications and a Social Network Feed provides instant and automatic updates of friends and family members on the home screen. Updates also appear next to each contact in the Social Address Book.

What’s more, the LG Mini boasts a 5.0 megapixel camera featuring advanced face detection which allows uploading of sharp, vivid pictures and videos wirelessly to multiple social networks in one simple step. The device also plays music and movies in several popular file formats and even includes an FM radio.

With HSDPA connectivity at 7.2 Mbps and Wi-Fi, the LG Mini can browse the internet at high speed and also provide real-time location information using A-GPS.

The LG Mini will be available in Europe starting in March, followed by other markets, including Singapore. Prices will vary country-to-country and will be announced separately in each market.
