M1 reduces data bundle from 12GB to 2GB with new 3G/4G smartphone plans

Posted on 06 September 2012 by

M1 will launch their 4G service plans on 15 September 2012. On the same day, M1 will also obsolete the old Surf plans – ValueSurf, Lite Surf and ExtremeSurf plans. These 3 plans are rather popular because it gives users a 12GB data bundle and 500 SMS.

M1 will replace it with the new ValueSurf+, LiteSurf+,ExtremeSurf+ and MaxSurf+ plans. The noticeable change is the data bundle for the various plans. From the usual 12GB, it is reduced to 2GB, 3GB, 5GB. MaxSurf+ is at 12GB.

The upgraded ValueSurf+ is still at S$39 bundles in 600 free SMS instead of 500. LiteSurf+ is at S$59 , S$4 more than it’s original plan. Instead of it’s 250mins outgoing calls, M1 throws in 300 mins and 800 free SMS. The ExtremeSurf+ is priced at S$98, $3 more than the original plan. Instead of 600 mins outgoing calls, M1 throws in another 100 mins making it 700 mins and 1000 Free SMS but the unlimited free data is removed and is now capped at 5GB. A new plan MaxSurf+ at S$198 is introduced which has unlimited voice call minutes,2000 SMS and 12 GB data.

The new Surf plans is also available for 4G value added service at S$10.70/mth.

For those who re-contract, an extra 1GB will be added on to the free bundle. Effectively from 15 September, those who are on the old plans will have their data bundle dropped from 12GB to 2+1 GB (ValueSurf+ plan).

Looks like the good old days of unlimited or 12GB abundance of data bundle is history. In fact, if we calculate it this way, we should be paying lesser as most telcos charges S$5.35/GB when the subscriber exceeds the data limit. In this case, A 12GB to 2GB reduction is 10GB, based on the calculation, the plan should be S$50 cheaper.

I do know of people who abuse the data by torrenting. This greatly affects the data performance of others. In fact, the reduction and cap on the limit will smoother give mobile users a better internet experience.

Below are the charts comparing the old and new plans.

* so far, the iPhone plans remains the same with 12GB data.

Windows Phone 7 ‘Mango’ Update to be released by Fall 2011, supports HTML 5 and Windows Phone 8 ‘Apollo’ in 2012

Posted on 16 December 2010 by

Now it seems we may also be seeing Microsoft giving an extra push for the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform and Mary Jo Foley over on ZDNet tells us there could be a major update for Windows Phone 7 in the fall of 2011, rather than the minor update reported to be due in January or February. The fall update has the codename ‘Mango’ and could be known as Windows Phone 7.5 and then it seems as though Windows Phone 8 dubbed ‘Apollo’ may follow late in 2012.

Tipsters are reporting the ‘Mango’ update will add HTML5 support to Windows Phone 7 and also Silverlight run-time, along with other features. Microsoft has not yet confirmed any of this information as you might expect, nor has it answered questions about speculated CDMA Windows Phone 7 devices on Verizon and Sprint, rumored to be being launched at CES.

Going back to the rumors earlier today about the Windows 8 OS being shown at CES, Emil Protalinski over on TechSpot is one of those who seriously doubts this will happen even though many have reported it and cautions, “don’t hold your breath if you want to see Windows 8 next month.” What would you like to see Microsoft revealing at CES 2011 and what updates to Windows Phone 7 would you like to see? Why not send us your comments and let us know.

HTC released updated HTC Hub with Weather ‘Live tiles’ update

Posted on 15 December 2010 by

HTC has released an HTC Hub update which brings the joy of weather live tiles to the Windows Phone 7 Start screen. The new HTC live tile shows the weather for either the current or a predefined location as well as it gives a weather outlook and shows (useless) thumbnails for some featured applications.

Yet not featured are animations in the live tile as well as we are still waiting for even more useful live tile updates from HTC – let’s say a HTC Stocks live tile would also make a lot of sense.

But anyway, it’s finally a start and HTC is bringing some HTC Sense love to Windows Phone 7 as well – at least as much as possible and allowed by Microsoft. The updated HTC Hub is now available from HTC’s Marketplace category.

Microsoft to issue 2nd Windows Phone 7 update due MWC 2011

Posted on 10 December 2010 by

Microsoft is reportedly readying a second Windows Phone 7 update to unveil at Mobile World Congress in February 2011, bringing with it improved multitasking support along with in-app downloads and broader customization options for end users. According to beta-testing developers talking to WinRumours, CEO Steve Ballmer will use his MWC 2011 keynote to launch the new developer APIs, themselves coming on the heels of a Jan update to deliver copy and paste functionality.

That early update has already begun seeding with developers, with a general release supposedly scheduled to go out during CES 2011 early next month. Meanwhile some developers are also testing parts of the second update, with one reporting that it “includes some great new features for developers,” and that “Windows Phone 7 apps in 2011 will certainly become more interesting.”

Also tipped for imminent release are a Silverlight update to Windows Phone 7, again believed to be coming at MWC 2011, and – further down the line – a significant update to the platform’s browser. That, though, is likely to see tweaks earlier in the year, but the bulk of the changes are expected to be saved until Windows Phone 8.

Rovio mobile, has once again confirmed that Angry Birds is currently being developed for Windows Phone 7

Posted on 09 December 2010 by

Mikael Hed,founder of Rovio mobile, has once again confirmed that Angry Birds is currently being developed for Windows Phone 7 during the Le Web conference today in Paris. The game has been bought more than 12 million times (!) and has been downloaded (free version with ads) more than 30 Million times (!!). Crazy numbers right? That’s why having this game on Windows Phone 7 can only be a good thing for PR and marketing. Here’s the short transcript about the WP7 version:

Windows Phone 7 will get massive update and catch up with other OS

Posted on 05 December 2010 by

We’ve been covering the rumored software update for Windows Phone 7 for sometime now, even having our forum members add some info to the mix. So far, the update is suppose to have the following features:

Bing turn-by-turn directions, improvements
Custom ringer support
Copy/Paste
Multi-tasking (of some form)

We have a feeling that’s just the beginning, as Chris Walsh, known for his contribution to ChevronWP7, has evidently been leaked some info on the update, calling it “massive” and more tantalizingly, “MS took 3 months to do what Apple did in 3 years” and “Lets just say the could have called it Windows Phone 8″–that’s exactly the kind of thing we and the market in general want to hear.

Whether or not it all bares fruit remains to be seen, but too many independent sources are all saying the same thing: the first update to Windows Phone 7 will impress.

I would definitely hope to see Asian text input and menu display. Tethering via USB or as an AP would definitely put it on Up against the iPhone and Android 2.2 devices out there.

So what updates do you wish to see in the upcoming Microsoft Windows Phone 7 update ? post your comments here and in http://forums.ocworkbench.com

LG Optimus 7 E900 Reviewed

Posted on 29 November 2010 by

Today, we bring you our review of the LG E900 aka Optimus 7. LG Optimus 7 E900 is a standard candybar touchscreen phone with a 3.8 inch display, a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and a 5 MP camera powered by Windows Phone 7 OS.

The hardware specifications of the LG E900 Optimus 7 are pretty impressive. They are the same as the high end Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S or the Motorola Droid X.

The 5 megapixel camera is capable of capturing in standard or wide screen mode of up to 2592 x 1944 pixels. It has autofocus, LED flash and HD 720p video recording with LED. As for connectivity, it supports GPRS, EDGE, 3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n with DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, microUSB 2.0.

Similar to the iPhone, you would need a client software Zune to synchronise your music, videos, images with the phone using the cable. I particularly like the feature Play to. You can use that to Play your video or to your Win7 PC conencted to the same WiFi Access point. While this is a good feature to have, Windows Phone 7 does not support tethering, so you can’t use the phone to share out your 3G network to the PCs in your environment. (There is a hack which can enable dial up networking but it doesn’t seem to work for me as I am unsure of the parameters to be supplied for the telco).

LG Optimus 7 E900 Windows Phone 7 Review
bluetooth 28 Nov 2010

In the past, Smartphones were usually associated with Windows Mobile. In fact, that is somewhat made possible with the large number of apps available on that WM6 and WM6.5 with keyboard interface.

When Apple iphone came into the mobile scene, things changed as it offered a touch screen with tons of apps that runs way smoother and easier to use. Android joined in later and it has also eroded the marketshare of Windows phones.

Microsoft has to do something about it. With much anticipation, Microsoft officially announced it’s Windows Phone 7 series early this year. The new mobile Operating System is not compatible with WM6.5 and it has a totally new concept known as HUBs. It makes access to features easier with the a capactive screen.

Microsoft probably learnt a few tricks from Apple as it tries to lock up a number of features and to standardise the feature set on all the manufacturer’s products. Thus, most Windows Phone 7, be it from LG, HTC or Samsung would be quite similar in specifications except the screen, camera battery capacity just to name a few.

Today, we take a look the new Optimus 7, the first Windows Phone 7 mobile handset from LG.

LG Optimus 7 E900 is a standard candybar touchscreen phone with a 3.8 inch display, a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM and a 5 MP camera.

The hardware specifications of the LG E900 Optimus 7 are pretty impressive. They are the same as the high end Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy S or the Motorola Droid X.

Below are pictures and specifications of the Optimus 7

Windows Phone 7 unlocker “jailbreak” released

Posted on 26 November 2010 by

Google sometimes give us some interesting results. It is coincidental I bought my first Windows Phone 7 and now I have a new way to load applications just like you do with iPhone + Cydia + additional sources.

According to the site ChevronWP7, the software was released yesterday and it claims to be able to “root” your Windows Phone 7 such that you can unlock a WP7 device without a Marketplace developer account.

Try it at your own risk.

Today we have an exciting breakthrough for the Windows Phone 7 homebrew community – the ability for anyone to unlock a WP7 device without a Marketplace developer account. Unlocking allows the sideloading of experimental applications that would otherwise can’t be published to the Marketplace. Unlocking allows the sideloading of experimental applications that would otherwise can’t be published to the Marketplace, such as those which access private or native APIs.

We’ve taken the pain out of the process involved and put together a super simple executable that will allow anyone to unlock any WP7 device on the market using a USB cable and just a couple clicks.

This tool is completely safe and reversible for the phone. (The app even allows you to relock the phone.)

v1.0 download mirrors:

Notes

•If you’re encountering a connection error (you don’t have the Windows Phone SDK installed), try download/install the following registry key and restart your machine then try again
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsPhone\ProxyPorts]
“DeviceReg”=dword:000069C5
•Minimum supported OS: Windows XP SP2
•Please ensure your device has a “full sync” relationship with the Zune client, not a “guest” relationship
As this is our first release, you may run into issues. Please let us know in the comments if this tool worked/didn’t work for you (with relevant system information).

LG OPTIMUS 7 OPENS A NEW WINDOW TO CONTENT SHARING

A revolutionary mobile social entertainment experience with the LG Optimus 7

SINGAPORE, 12 October 2010 – LG Electronics (LG) today announced the Singapore launch of its first Windows® Phone 7 devices, LG Optimus 7. Based on Microsoft’s new operating system that offers people the ability to do more in fewer steps, the LG Optimus 7 introduces a revolutionary experience of mobile life for consumers.

A direct result of LG and Microsoft’s partnership in the smartphone market, the LG Optimus 7 offers the glance and go experience of Windows® Phone 7 combined with unique features available only on the LG devices. These compelling applications — the DLNA-based Play To, augmented reality (AR) ScanSearch and Voice-to-Text — are available as Live Tiles on Windows Phone 7 and can be accessed via integrated “Hubs”.

“We have designed LG Optimus 7 series to include a truly innovative content sharing experience via the Windows Phone 7 environment,” said Dr Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Having worked closely with Microsoft to develop these fantastic devices, we are thrilled to now be able to reveal our vision of what a true Windows Phone 7 should be.”

Andy Lees, President of the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft, added: “We are very excited to be working with LG, a mobile phone industry innovator. Windows Phone 7 is designed to bring together what you care about most and LG is a key partner in making that experience a reality for people around the world.”

New Experience in Sharing and Enjoying Entertainment

The LG Optimus 7 offers a breakthrough in mobile social entertainment, putting the mobile device at the centre of today’s digital lifestyle. With Play To, the DLNA-based multimedia sharing technology available only on the LG Optimus 7, users will have the most user-friendly file-sharing experience. LG is leading the innovation of DLNA technology by offering easy and intuitive settings for accessing this feature.

Play To lets users share multimedia files with other digital devices from the picture, video or music Hubs without having to access other menus. Users will be able to display videos and photos captured on their LG Optimus 7 on a TV or enjoy music on their phones through their favourite speakers without wires.

ScanSearch, an AR application that connects users with a world of information, is another unique feature available only on LG Windows Phone 7 devices. Users can access real-time information about shopping, dining, weather, entertainment and banking, bringing together one’s online and offline worlds for a more enjoyable life.

Users can also speak up and be heard, thanks to LG’s Voice-to-Text feature which allows communication without the need for finger input. LG Optimus 7 users will have the freedom to transcribe their voice into text for updating Facebook and Twitter or composing emails and memos for convenient, hands-free communication.

The LG Optimus 7 helps users enjoy a new entertainment experience through the introduction of Microsoft’s popular Xbox LIVE® and Zune® services. Consumers will have direct access to their favourite games and music, bringing all entertainment devices together for more convenient enjoyment.

“LG is constantly pushing the envelope in mobile communications in order to elevate users’ experience with innovative technologies,” said Jeff Cheh, Managing Director and CEO, LG Electronics Singapore. “The LG Optimus 7 integrates exclusive functions such as the all new Play To, ScanSearch and Voice-to-Text, enabling users’ access to things that matter most to them. This exemplifies our commitment in creating a phone that delivers not only the latest technology, but also the best user experience.”

Natasha Kwan, General Manager for Microsoft’s Mobile Communication Business in Asia, added, “In partnership with LG, we are delivering a different phone experience to consumers.  Windows Phone 7 is designed to bring together what people care about most, and the Optimus 7 series builds on that to make everyday tasks easier by doing more in fewer steps.”

Creating Powerful Digital Content

LG Optimus 7 immerses users in the entertainment experience with the ability to create powerful digital content. The 720p HD video resolution offers recording and playback of stunning visual quality. Videos can also be easier shared online through social media and offline on a TV through Play To. The LG Optimus 7 also offers a 16:9 aspect capture and playback for shooting and viewing movies in cinematic style.

The advanced 5MP camera offers a host of technological enhancements from LG such as Intelligent Shot, which enable users to take the perfect photo without having to adjust camera settings, and Panoramic Mode for stitching together a full 360-degree landscape scene.

Offering New Forms of Interaction

Windows Phone 7 introduces a new approach to the Start screen experience through Live Tiles that offer easier access to information and services from the Web and applications that matter most to users. The six Hubs of the OS — People, Pictures, Games, Music + Video, Marketplace and Office — organize information on the phones in a whole new way, bringing together related applications, services and content.

A Form Factor That Just Works

LG Optimus 7 comes with an expansive 3.8 inch WVGA LCD display that can capture every detail in a photo with its 800×480 pixels. The screen size makes the Optimus 7 large enough for convenient web surfing but svelte enough to fit in any back pocket. The generous 16GB of internal memory is enough to store hundreds of MP3 files, hours of video and hundreds of applications. What’s more, the extra large 1500mAh removable battery is good for hours of internet browsing, e-book reading or game playing. Or simply for talking.

The LG Optimus 7 will be available in Singapore through all telcos as well as major telecommunications outlets in late October 2010. The recommended retail price for the LG Optimus 7 will be announced later.

LG Optimus 7 Advocates

In conjunction with the LG Optimus 7 campaign, LG has appointed seven personalities to be LG Optimus 7 advocates. They include celebrity chef Willin Low, prominent Asian filmmaker Boo Jun Feng, radio deejay Glenn Ong, Singapore supermodel Serena Kim Absit, producer Gillian Tan, Fannison Leong, one of Female’s 50 Gorgeous People and established international banker David Lim.

These seven personalities have been selected due to their varied and established backgrounds as well as their need to stay connected while on-the-move. The LG Optimus 7 is their perfect companion for their busy lifestyles as it allows them to do more in fewer steps. Said Mr David Lim, one of the appointed LG Optimus 7 advocates: “The LG Optimus 7 is a breeze to use and has become an important device for me to keep track of my schedules and to-dos while staying connected with my friends and family.”

Experience the LG Optimus 7 Revolution

Consumers can witness the brand new LG Optimus 7 at the LG Optimus 7 Experiential Zone at Wisma Atria from 15 – 17 October 2010. At the roadshow, consumers will be able to see the innovative LG features such as Play To, ScanSearch and Voice-to-Text and see how the result of a collaborative partnership between LG and Microsoft can bring about a new realm of mobile communication.
