Internet Explorer 9 supports GPU acceleration and multicore speed up

Posted on 17 March 2010 by bluetooth

As reported over on ExtremeTech, Internet Explorer 9 will support hardware acceleration usnig the GPU within your PC.

The GPGPU engine will work with either AMD or NVIDIA card by offloading rendering operation from the CPU to the GPU. This allows the CPU to deal with other things like Javascript or other processes.

In addition, the IE team is also working on speeding up JavaScript performance by taking advance of dual or quad processors by compiling the code on one core and running it on another

The bad news is that Internet Explorer 9 with all the multi core and GPGPU suport will only work on Vista and 7 and server products from Microsoft. XP users are totally not supported.

If you are running Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 or newer, you can download the platform preview directly from the Test Drive website.

Microsoft officially ends support for VISTA on 13 Apr and XP/2000 will end on 13 Jul

Posted on 15 March 2010 by bluetooth

On April 13, 2010, Vista RTM will reach the end of support while on July 13, 2010, Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 Professional will reach the same milestone. In addition, Microsoft will be ending support for Windows Server 2000 and moving Windows 2003 from Mainstream Support to Extended Support.

The end of support means there will be no more security updates for these versions. This is in-line with our existing support lifecycle policy that has been in place since 2002.

It’s important that all customers take an action prior to the end of support date to ensure they are as secure as possible with their Windows PCs. Options include:
· For customers ready to update their PCs or OS to a newer version, Windows 7 provides the best experience today. Windows 7 is faster, easier and works the way customers want.
· Customers not ready to upgrade and continue to use Windows XP or Windows Vista should download and install the latest service pack: either Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP2

Microsoft is making it as easy as possible for customers to understand what version of Windows XP and Windows Vista they’re using today and how to upgrade their PCs to the version that’s right for them
· Consumers should visit http://windows.microsoft.com/eos for information and assistance.
· For SMB customers with a Select agreement, we will continue to offer the “Up to Date Discount” program through July 2010. Visit www.windows.com/business for more information
· For enterprise customers that need to stay on the unsupported products, there is the option for them to purchase custom support, to continue to receive custom updates.

Updates that keep customers’ PCs safe are provided through Windows Update at no cost. All customers should turn on automatic updates to get critical updates automatically, and check in every once in a while to make sure they are getting all the latest improvements for your PC. This includes upgrading to Internet Explorer 8 and downloading Microsoft Security Essentials.

Opera releases 10.50 with speed boost and HTML5 support

Posted on 03 March 2010 by bluetooth

The world’s fastest browser for Windows

Opera 10.50 includes speed boost, numerous enhancements

March 2, 2010 – Oslo, Norway

Opera Software today released Opera 10.50, the fastest Web browser thus-far produced for Windows computers. Opera 10.50 also includes a sleek and refined new design, as well as private browsing, where Opera hides all traces of sites you visit. Opera 10.50 is available completely free from www.opera.com.

Visual tabs

Browsing, refined

Sometimes a browser should just get out of your way. The improvements to Opera’s look and feel are many, but the result is a leaner browsing experience, so you have more room on screen for content. The new Opera menu button replaces the traditional menu bar, so you have a single-point to access all of Opera’s groundbreaking features.

Catching lightning in a bottle … er, browser

Opera 10.50 is the fastest browser we have ever produced. Under the hood, we introduced a new JavaScript engine, Carakan, and a new graphics library, Vega. What that means to you: no more waiting around for a site to load.

Private tabs

Private browsing

What you do on the Web is up to you, no one else. Make sure it stays that way by using private browsing to remove specific sites from your browsing history. Unlike other browsers, Opera 10.50 allows you to browse privately in a tab or in an entirely separate window.

Platform integration

On Windows 7/Vista, we let Opera enjoy Aero Glass, as well as supporting Aero Peek and Jump Lists. Now, you can easily access your Speed Dials, tabs and more from the Taskbar.

The old favorites

Opera has pioneered or introduced many of the features commonplace in Web browsers today, such as tabs and Speed Dial. But, a few just cannot be found anywhere else:

  • Opera Turbo – Whenever your bandwidth slows to a crawl, just turn on Opera Turbo, and let your worries eat your dust. Opera Turbo compresses Web pages on our powerful servers. Because you transfer less data, Web content gets to you faster.
  • Opera Unite – Share content immediately, without uploading files or posting to a social network. Opera Unite combines the flexibility of a Web application with the capability of a Web server, easily accessible from your browser.
  • Opera Link – Take your data with you. Synchronize your Speed Dial, notes, search-engine preferences and more; then, just log into any other Opera Web browser or even Opera Mini, the world’s most popular mobile Web browser.

What we say

“Opera 10.50 is the fastest browser in almost all speed tests,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera. “But, more important than any speed test is the real-world speed during use. We designed Opera 10.50 to be easy to use, while making our unique features stand out, so you can get more out of the Web.”

Rewriting the Web with HTML5 and CSS3

Opera 10.50 includes improved standards support for HTML5 and CSS3, giving Web designers the tools they need to make eye-catching Web applications that work on completely open technologies. Read more for complete information on standards support in Opera 10.50.

Availability

Opera is available completely free from www.opera.com or via Microsoft’s browser choice screen. Opera 10.50 is currently available for Windows and comes in 42 different languages. Mac and Linux versions are coming soon.

Opera 10.50 beta promises to be fastest PC web browser

Posted on 13 February 2010 by bluetooth

Feature details

The fastest JavaScript engine ever

A completely new JavaScript engine makes Opera 10.50 run Web applications more smoothly. Up to 8x faster than its predecessor, the new Carakan engine speeds up even the most demanding Web sites.

Easily use search engines

Use different search engines and Web-site searches from the new Search field. You can add custom searches such as Twitter or your favorite news site, look at previous searches or find something on the current page.

Easily use search engines

Beautiful Windows integration

With the Aero Glass effect on Windows 7 and Vista, Opera 10.50 beta looks better than ever. Enjoy the best Windows 7 integration with Aero Peek, Jump List support and a completely reorganized and easy-to-use menu bar under the new Opera menu.

Beautiful Windows integration

New Opera Widgets

A new platform allows Opera Widgets to move beyond the Web browser and onto your desktop. Multi-process architecture allows each widget to run as a separate process, and they can be debugged with Opera’s Dragonfly developer tools. With native OS integration, Opera now lets Web developers easily create widgets that work just like native applications.

A new level of standards compliance

Opera’s leading support of Web standards has been further improved. Features from HTML 5 and CSS 3, such as video support and enhanced effects, put more power in the hands of developers. In Opera 10.50, the Web looks better than ever.

Smarter address field

Now it is easier to use your preferred search engine right from the address field. As you type, it shows matching results in your history, bookmarks and even actual content on the pages you have visited. You can even delete pages from your history, right from the results drop-down menu.

Smarter address field

Improved dialogs for better browsing

Dialog boxes, such as JavaScript alerts, HTTP notifications and password manager, are now displayed as a page overlay. This allows you to switch tabs or windows while the dialog is still displayed, without any interruption of your browsing.

Improved dialogs

New Vega graphics library

Everything in Opera 10.50 is drawn on your screen using Opera’s new, high-performance graphics library. This enables super fast and smooth graphics for everything from tab switching to animation on Web pages.

New private browsing

Browse without leaving any trace of the Web sites you have visited. Create both private tabs and private windows and plan that surprise vacation, without any worries.

New private browsing

Find what you need in a page

Quickly find what you need on any page. You can fine-tune your search to match all the text, just the whole word, or only the links on the page. To use this feature, select “Find…” from the Opera menu, or use convenient keyboard shortcuts such as [.] (period) for text and [,] (comma) for links.

Find what you need in a page

We are not finished yet

As we continue to work on our groundbreaking, new version, stay tuned for more details.

How to get Google Buzz to run on desktop browser

Posted on 10 February 2010 by bluetooth

While most users are happily buzzing on their iPhone or Android handsets, the majority of Gmail users are left wondering what is Google Buzz all about. Well, basically it is something like another Facebook but it is by Google. It integrates twitter, picasa  etc. So whatever you post can be automatically be updated in the “tweets”. Your followers will be able to see your postings and you can also follow others so that you can see what they post. So basically Buzz is an alternative to Facebook+twitter in a way.

For those who wants to try it out before your Gmail shows the Buzz icon, you can download a add on for FireFox. This add on is known as User Agent Switcher 0.72. You can mimic a iPhone browser and Google Buzz will be ‘activated’ as it thinks you are browsing the web application  from an iPhone. Try it out, it works.

Apple’s iPad does not support Adobe Flash

Posted on 29 January 2010 by bluetooth

Somewhat sounds like a rant but it is true that the Apple iPad. It simply doesn’t support Adobe Flash!

It looks like Apple is continuing to impose restrictions on their devices that limit both content publishers and consumers. Unlike many other ebook readers using the ePub file format, consumers will not be able to access ePub content with Apple’s DRM technology on devices made by other manufacturers. And without Flash support, iPad users will not be able to access the full range of web content, including over 70% of games and 75% of video on the web.

If I want to use the iPad to connect to Disney, Hulu, Miniclip, Farmville, ESPN, Kongregate, or JibJab — not to mention the millions of other sites on the web — I’ll be out of luck.

Adobe and more than 50 of our partners in the Open Screen Project are working to enable developers and content publishers to deliver to any device, so that consumers have open access to their favorite interactive media, content, and applications across platform, regardless of the device that people choose to use.

Microsoft announces pricing of Office 2010 at CES

Posted on 06 January 2010 by bluetooth

Microsoft announced that Office 2010, due for release in June, will be made available in four versions: Office Home and Business, Office Professional, Office Home and Student, and Office Professional Academic. Those who unlock the pre-loaded version of Office on newly purchased machines, via a product key card, are eligible for a discount; by doing so, Microsoft seems to be encouraging users to purchase products from its hardware partners, a natural move considering how Redmond has emphasized in the past how its own financial fortunes will be tied to rising PC sales in 2010.

Office Home and Student will retail for $149 as a boxed product, and for $119 with a product key card. Office Home and Business will retail for $279 as a boxed product, and $199 with a product key card. Office Professional will retail for $499 as a boxed product, and $349 with a product key card. The Office Professional Academic version will retail for $99 as a boxed product, and evidently not be available for unlocking on a pre-loaded machine.

Microsoft has announced it will offer free, stripped-down versions of Word, OneNote, Excel and PowerPoint to Microsoft Live subscribers, but the complete range of tools will only be available to those who purchase the full version of Office 2010. Microsoft may also face issues from users with a “good enough” mentality towards their current version of Office, and therefore be reluctant to upgrade.

Kaspersky Lab Issues 2010 Cyberthreat Forecast

Posted on 30 December 2009 by bluetooth

Kaspersky Lab Issues 2010 Cyberthreat Forecast

Hong Kong – December 30, 2009 – Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, outlines the threats we can expect to see in 2010 as a result of cybercriminal activity.

In 2008, the company’s analysts forecast a rise in the number of global epidemics. Unfortunately, that forecast proved to be accurate: 2009 was dominated by sophisticated malicious programs with rootkit functionality, the Kido worm (also known as Conficker), web attacks and botnets, SMS fraud and attacks on social networks. So what can we expect from 2010?

According to the company’s experts, in the coming year we will see a shift in the types of attacks on users: from attacks via websites and applications towards attacks originating from file sharing networks. Already in 2009 a series of mass malware epidemics have been “supported” by malicious files that are spread via torrent portals. This method has been used to spread notorious threats such as TDSS and Virut as well as the first backdoor for Mac OS X. In 2010, we expect to see a significant increase in these types of incidents on P2P networks.

Cybercriminals will continue to compete for traffic. The modern cybercriminal world is making more and more of an effort to legalize itself and there are lots of ways to earn money online using the huge amount of traffic that can be generated by botnets. Today, it is mostly black-market services that compete to make use of botnet traffic. In the future, however, we foresee the emergence of more “grey” schemes in the botnet services market. So-called “partner programs” enable botnet owners to make a profit from activities such as sending spam, performing DoS attacks or distributing malware without committing an explicit crime.

The decline in gaming Trojans witnessed in 2009 is likely to be repeated for fake antivirus programs in 2010. The latter first made an appearance in 2007 and 2009 saw a peak in their activity and involvement in a number of major epidemics. The Kido worm, for example, installed a rogue antivirus program on infected computers. The fake antivirus market has now been saturated and the profits for cybercriminals have fallen. Moreover, this kind of activity is closely monitored by both IT security companies and law enforcement agencies. This makes it increasingly difficult to create and distribute fake antivirus programs.

“Malware will become much more sophisticated in 2010 and many antivirus programs will be slow to treat infected computers due to advanced file infection methods and rootkit technologies,” says Alex Gostev, Director of Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research & Analysis Team. “IT security companies will respond by developing even more complex protection tools. However, the malicious programs capable of bypassing these measures will remain more or less immune to antivirus programs for some time.”

When it comes to attacks on web services, Google Wave looks like it will be making all the headlines in 2010. Attacks on this new Google service will no doubt follow the usual pattern: first, the sending of spam, followed by phishing attacks, then the exploiting of vulnerabilities and the spreading of malware. The planned launch of the network-based Chrome OS is a noteworthy event, but the experts at Kaspersky Lab do not anticipate much interest in this platform from cybercriminals.

However, 2010 promises to be a difficult time for iPhone and Android. The first malicious programs for these mobile platforms appeared in 2009, which is a sure sign that they have aroused the interest of cybercriminals. The only iPhone users at risk are those with compromised devices, but the same is not true for Android users who are all vulnerable to attack. The increasing popularity of mobile phones running the Android OS in China combined with a lack of effective checks to ensure third-party software applications are secure will lead to a number of high profile malware outbreaks.

The detection of new vulnerabilities will remain the major cause of epidemics. These vulnerabilities will be detected in both software developed by third parties (such as Adobe, Apple, etc.) and in Windows 7, the new operating system that has just entered the market. If no serious vulnerabilities are detected, 2010 may well prove to be one of the quietest years for some time.

Microsoft releases Win 7 USB / DVD download tool for easy install on netbooks without DVD drive

Posted on 11 December 2009 by bluetooth

Microsoft has officially released a Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool. This open source program will make the process of installing Windows 7 on a netbook much easier than described above. Once you have a Windows 7 ISO file on your computer, plug in a USB flash drive (4GB+ should do), run the tool, and follow the instructions.

The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file on a USB flash drive or a DVD. To create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive, download the ISO file and then run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. Once this is done, you can install Windows 7 directly from the USB flash drive or DVD.

The ISO file contains all the Windows 7 installation files combined into a single uncompressed file. When you download the ISO file, you need to copy it to some medium in order to install Windows 7. This tool allows you to create a copy of the ISO file to a USB flash drive or a DVD. To install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive or DVD, all you need to do is insert the USB flash drive into your USB port or insert your DVD into your DVD drive and run Setup.exe from the root folder on the drive.

Note: You cannot install Windows 7 from the ISO file until you copy it to a USB flash drive or DVD with the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool and install from there.

The copy of the ISO file that the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool creates is bootable. Bootable media allows you to install Windows 7 without having to first run an existing operating system on your machine. If you change the boot order of drives in your computer’s BIOS, you can run the Windows 7 installation directly from your USB flash drive or DVD when you turn on your computer. Please see the documentation for your computer for information on how to change the BIOS boot order of drives.

For Windows XP Users

The following applications must be installed prior to installing the tool:

•Microsoft .NET Framework v2 must be installed. It can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en.
•Microsoft Image Mastering API v2 must be installed. It can be downloaded at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=B5F726F1-4ACE-455D-BAD7-ABC4DD2F147B&displaylang=en.

Microsoft Win 7 Black screen of death remains a mystrey

Posted on 02 December 2009 by bluetooth

Microsoft’s Windows 7 has landed with on some users’ systems, causing concern with black screen of death.

This error occurs after logging in to the system with a black screen of death. The system is unresponsive and the only way is to restart the system.

This problem seems to affect not only Win 7, it also affects older Win XP, VISTA, NT, 2000. This all happpended after applying the latest patch on Nov 10.  The patch seemed to have made modifications to the Access Control List (ACL) entries in the registry.

A British security firm, Prevx, says that “millions” of people may be impacted.  The firm has released a fix that will fix some of these systems. After hours posting the 3rd party fix, it claims that the fix might not solve the problem.

If you are having the same issues, please post your comments in our forum at http://forums.ocworkbench.com
