Windows 8.1 is official and will be a free update to Windows 8 due to be released later this year

Posted on 15 May 2013 by bluetooth

Today at the JP Morgan Technology, Media & Telecom Conference in Boston, Tami Reller shared with the audience that the update previously referred to as “Windows Blue” will be called Windows 8.1and will be a free update to Windows 8 for consumers through the Windows Store.

During her remarks today, Tami reiterated our goal of delivering continual updates to create a richer experience for Windows customers. Windows 8.1 is part of that and continues the journey we first began with Windows 8 last fall. Windows 8.1 will help us to deliver the next generation of PCs and tablets with our OEM partners and to deliver the experiences customers— both consumers and businesses alike —need and will just expect moving forward.

Today, there are more devices – and choice – allowing you to pick the right Windows 8 device that meets your needs. Windows 8 provides a great experience for consuming and creating content, for both work and play and on the go. And you’ll immediately benefit from continual updates – whether it’s from app updates through the Windows Store, performance updates through Windows Update or the Windows 8.1 update later this year.

There will also be making a public preview of Windows 8.1 available starting on June 26, timed with the Build developer conference in San Francisco. The preview will be available for Windows 8 and Windows RT.

South Korean Banks and TV stations under cyber attack ?

Posted on 20 March 2013 by

According to a news report by CNN, South Korea’s Banks and TV stations system outage could be due to a cyber attack from the North.

One television station, YTN, reported that 500 of its computers had been disabled by the outage. Another, KBS, said that its internal networks had been “paralyzed,” but that the problem didn’t prevent it from broadcasting live.

A third broadcaster, MBC, was also reportedly experiencing problems.

Customers of Shinhan Bank are unable to log into the lender’s website at the moment, the company said in a statement.

A second lender, Nonghyup Bank, said that it had disconnected some of its computers after they were infected with a virus. The bank said its main server was still functioning and able to carry out Internet transactions.

Police didn’t immediately provide a reason for the server problems.

Twitter announces Twitter for Windows 8

Posted on 14 March 2013 by

Earlier today, Twitter announced Twitter for Windows 8, an app that makes it easier than ever to share and discover content on Windows 8 devices. Now available on the Windows Store, the app will be localized and available in 22 languages, including English, Chinese (PRC and Taiwan), Malay, Japanese, Thai, and more.

In addition to familiar Twitter features, this app introduces new functionality that takes advantage of unique Windows 8 features:

  • Snap view – use another app alongside Twitter. Snap Twitter into the left or right side of the screen and then start using another app. With snap view, you can adjust the size of the app to one-third, two-thirds or full screen.
  • Photos – large and center. With an all-new landscape view, not only can you view a larger version of individual photos, but you can also swipe horizontally to view multiple photos in the Discover tab or a user’s profile.
  • Share charm – tweet from any app, at any time. Simply swipe from the right edge of Windows 8 and then choose the Share charm to share content from any app, such as a photo or news article, to Twitter.
  • Search charm – search when you’re inspired. Similar to the Share charm, the Search charm makes it easy to find an account or see Tweets using a certain hashtag.
  • Live Tiles and notifications – don’t miss a beat. Keep up with what’s happening on Twitter using the Twitter live tiles and notifications, which show no matter which app you’re running.

Intel Broadwell does not come in LGA packaging but soldered on board.

Posted on 28 November 2012 by

According to a report on SemiAccurate, it is said that the upcoming Broadwell will not come in an LGA package, so no removable CPU. The news was leaked from Japan PC Watch.

So what is the impact ? Most end users might not feel much of a difference as most users still buy a processor + motherboard bundle anyway. The difference is that you can’t really choose which processor to pair with your board as they come soldered on.

Enthusiast who are always changing processors as fast as changing underwear will find themselves shut off in a way. Web sites that leaks information will find themselves shut off too as it would be difficult for some sources to ‘smuggle’ Engineering board with solder processors out.

One of the nightmares will be inventory control. Distributors will have to stock up massive amount of stocks (board with CPU integrated).

The worst nightmware for mainboard manufacturers is that they might be forced out of the competition in a way. The reason is simple, Intel might be having their own brand boards with CPU integrated and will compete head to head with their products. This might also force such manufactuers to divert their attention to the other processor maker, AMD which still remains attractive in terms of price/performance.

Actually, we already expected this day to come. First, the industry consolidated and killed almost all the chipset makers. The chipset makers ended up making South bridges and on board DVB tuners. Now they probably have to give up making south bridges as SATA 6Gbps or USB3 controllers are all integrated into the single chipset.

Next was the integration of higher quality graphics into the chipset, with that you don’t even need an external graphics card unless you are crazy over 3D games.

Everyone out there is having their own game plan. Look at Apple, and Microsoft now making their own hardware and software. If they can increase their market share and profit margin, do you think they will care about whether mainboard manufacturers in Taiwan will survive ?

In fact we spoke to a number of people about this matter. We somewhat agree that Intel might do that low to mid range notebooks and motherboards. They willleave the higher end boards with socketed designs. By doing so, they might not be pushing customers away to AMD. In fact, AMD Hudson E350 are all socketed designs but their Trinity series (FM2) and 990FX boards which are considered the higher end are still socket design.

If Intel goes for soldered design and flood the market with thier own brand boards, the OEM manufacturers will stand to gain for more orders. 3rd party manufacturers like ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, ECS, Biostar, ASRock might have serious problems if they can’t get hold of processors (for soldering onto their boards). If our prediction is right, the higher end boards might still adopt socketed design but how many percent of their revenue of the motherboard manufacturers comes from the expensive boards?

Secondly, the other mid range board makers will still continue to compete with socketed designs. They will also deliver some high end boards but that might not sell that well either. They might end up selling more AMD. Perhaps a third group might evolve making ARM based boards one day.

So at the end of the day, motherboard manufacturers will be here to stay. It is just that how will they will channel their resources into socket or non socketed boards.

Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo 6TB Review

Posted on 06 November 2012 by

Western Digital My Book Thunderbolt Duo
bluetooth 6 Nov 2012

The hot topic on the PC world is the Thunderbolt connectivity on the new motherboards. In fact, for the Mac users, Thunderbolt isn’t something new. If you have a new generation MacBook or Air, you will most likely have it prebuilt on your notebook.

While USB is still the preferred way of storage, the lightning fast interface of Thunderbolt might just slowly take away the shine this old standard. With Thunderbolt, you can transfer a full-length HD movie in under 30 seconds or thousands of MP3 songs in mere minutes. Thunderbolt™ I/O technology gives you two channels on the same connector with 10 Gb/s of throughput in both directions. Data moves to and from drives up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and up to 12 times faster than with FireWire 800, providing more than enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed drives without using a hub or switch.

Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant flags compatibility issues from Win 7 to Win 8 upgrade; Windows media centre is gone and no more support for Office 2003

Posted on 26 October 2012 by

Before you go and buy the Windows 8 upgrade or the DVD from retail store, it is best that you run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant from Microsoft.

Currently, I am on Windows 7 Ultimate. I ran through the Windows Upgrade assistant and was surprise to see the possible issues that I would face.

I am surprised that Windows Media Centre isn’t preinstall and I need an application to play DVD.

I did a check on the FAQ

Is Windows Media Center included in my upgrade?

No. If you want to install Windows Media Center, you need to buy the Windows 8 Media Center Pack after you upgrade to Windows 8. For more info, see the Add features webpage.

If you don’t have a third-party app that plays DVDs, or if you currently rely on Windows Media Player for DVD playback, you’ll need to download and install a third-party app or install Windows Media Center to play DVDs. If you use Windows Media Center on Windows 7 and are upgrading to Windows 8, for a limited time you can get the Windows 8 Media Center Pack for free.

Other issues are that my processor does not support NX and secure boot isn’t compatible with my PC’s BIOS.

To my surprise, it prompts that my screen resolution isn’t 1024×768. This is strange as I am running at 1280×720 wide screen.

Although Windows 8 upgrade promises upgrade paths for Windows XP users. It seems to cut off all support for Office 2003. My copy of Office 2003 professional has to go into history as it won’t run on it.

The good news is that most of my applications like adobe reader, Auslogics Disk Defrag, Epson Scan, Paint.Net, Tweetdeck, Quicktime, Skype, utorrent and even the Intel HD graphics drivers are compatible and it will run corectly under Windows 8.

So, it is better to run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant before you upgrade.

Microsoft temporary fix for critical IE bug under attack

Posted on 19 September 2012 by

Microsoft plans to release a temporary fix for a critical Internet Explorer vulnerability that attackers are exploiting to install malicious software when unsuspecting end users visit booby-trapped websites.

Microsoft’s announcement on Tuesday afternoon that it will make available a temporary patch known as a Fixit in the next few days came as a security researcher spotted three more websites that have exploited the vulnerability. The sites include nod32XX.com, led-professional-symposium.org, and defensenews.in, an India-based news portal dedicated to coverage of the defense industry. The sites install the Poison Ivy and PlugX remote access trojans, which allow attackers to remotely issue commands and monitor e-mail and instant message communications on infected machines.

“It seems the guys behind this 0day were targeting specific industries,” Blasco wrote in a blog post published Tuesday. “We’ve seen that they compromised a news site related to the defense industry and they created a fake domain related to LED technologies that can be used to perform spearphishing campaigns to those industries.”

Yunsun Wee, director of Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing group, didn’t address the number of sites targeting the previously undocumented flaw, but her post also suggested the attacks were targeted.

“While we have only seen a few attempts to exploit the issue, impacting an extremely limited number of people, we are taking this proactive step to help ensure Internet Explorer customers are protected and able to safely browse online,” she wrote. It won’t disrupt the IE browsing experience and will be installed just by clicking a button on a Microsoft webpage.

In a previous post Wee recommended users protect themselves against attack by installing the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit. Known as EMET, it adds advanced security defenses on older Windows versions and more strictly enforces them on newer ones. Microsoft has more about the vulnerability, which supports all supported versions of Internet Explorer, here.

The posts come as the German government recommended people curtail their use of Internet Explorer until a fix is available, researchers with antivirus provider Sophos reported, citing an advisory issued by the country’s Federal Office for Information Security.

Posted on 05 July 2012 by

Here are the results tested on a Intel H55 board with an external 1.5TB Seagate USB 2.0 HDD.

As the patch increases the block size, it will have more impact on sequential read and write.

From CrystalDiskMark, we can clearly see that the sequential read increases from 34MB/s to 43MB/s giving a 26% increase in speed. Likewise the write performance is increased from 23MB/s to 27MB/s, a 15.58% improvement.

Here are the results before patch.

How to improve your USB transfer speed by increasing the maximum transfer size of 64KB block to 2MB in the Usbstor.sys driver

How to improve your USB transfer speed by increasing the maximum transfer size of 64KB block to 2MB in the Usbstor.sys driver

Those who are using USB 2 devices would complain about the slowness in USB 2.0 transfers being capped at ~ 30MB/s

In fact, this is limited due to Windows default setting of a 64KB transfer block size. By updating your windows registry and modifying it to 2MB transfer, the USB performance can easily exceed 30MB/s reaching 40MB/s and above. The results using CrystalDiskMark can be found here.

You will need to download the hotfix from here.

After you install this update, to increase the maximum transfer size of USB storage devices, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start

HP Backs Out Of ARM Devices Running Windows

Posted on 03 July 2012 by

In a rather surprising statement, Hewlett Packard (HP), the world’s largest seller of personal computers, has said that it will be making a paradigm shift from tablets based on ARM devices once the next Microsoft Windows operating system (Windows 8) is launched. Instead, it will shift to x86 chip architecture chips like the ones made popular by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). This decision will mean that Intel and AMD are likely to see an increase in sales considering the market base of HP. In addition, it shows that Microsoft cannot rely too heavily on old partners in the personal computer market to market its latest technical foray. It is also speculated that the reason behind Microsoft releasing its own tablet was because HP backed out, though the company maintains that it was because of positive input from users. HP’s justification for the shift is the strong, existing base of x86 products which are immensely widely popular with users.

With a potential partner like HP backing out, Microsoft’s plans to control Apple iPad might have just gone haywire, as the number of ARM devices running Windows (the RT variant) just plummeted. Initially, Windows RT was released only to a few developers to ensure quality but it appears to have worked against them. However, some analysts say that a reduction in the development samples is not a negative if the released devices are of superior quality and suggest buying Microsoft shares.

HP says that the first tablet it is going to release with Windows 8 is for a business market. While there was initially a thought of developing an ARM device with Qualcomm chipsets and Windows RT OS, deliberations led to a decision to focus on the other side first. One of the main reasons why HP has chosen to stick with the x86 architecture is the plethora of applications supported by the chipset. While the ARM devices can run only applications for Windows RT and Windows 8, x86 devices have the entire existing Windows applications base at their disposal.

Last week, Microsoft had released its own tablet running Windows RT, breaking the tradition of partnering with hardware developers to run its software. The company stated that the RT version will be up for grabs when Windows 8 goes on sale but it appears that the x86 version will take a further three months.
