AMD is slated to announce the new generation AMD GPUs code name Southern Islands and start retailing in Nov 2010

According to news from Chinese media, AMD is slated to announce the new generation AMD GPUs code name Southern Islands. It will start retailing in Nov 2010.

With the upcoming series, AMD will be revising the prices of Radeon HD 5000 series graphics card.

It is unsure if the new series “Southern Islands” will be named as Radeon HD 6000 series.

It is also rumoured that AMD planned to have Northern Islands using 32nm technology. As TSMC goes for 28nm, AMD switched plans and will continue to use 40nm process and change it’s code name to Southern Islands.

According to the news media, AMD did not comment on the report.

SPARKLE GeForce GTX 470/465 Graphics Card Uses Solderless Product With Green Process And Free Contact Process Cooling Technology
Ordinary Graphics card cooler more commonly use soldering process with tin-based solder alloys, the soldering tin will melt at a certain temperature, the binding layer is formed between the metal welding parts and tin atoms. When the graphics card starts running, the GPU heat transferred between the cooling metals must pass the soldering medium first. The SPARKLE GeForce GTX 470/465 Graphics Card uses Solderless Product With Green Process,making the cooling metal to fully contact each other, improving the ineffective heat conduction caused by traditional tin soldering and reducing the thermal resistance. Compared with tin soldering used by ordinary graphics card cooler, the Solderless Product With Green Process, has a higher heat transfer efficiency.

Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 460 Graphics card details leaked on net

Gigabyte, in a sales kit presentation to its distribution partners, detailed its upcoming GeForce GTX 460 768MB product, the GV-N460D5-768I-B. This card sticks to the NVIDIA reference design, including reference clock speeds, and is positioned at the US $199 price point. What’s more interesting about these sales kit slides is the performance and market position described by Gigabyte. The GTX 460, according to the company, is said to perform “close” to generic ATI Radeon HD 5830. The keyword here is “close”, as HD 5830 is still the faster card.

Gigabyte also demonstrated the card in a variety of games and benchmarks, where it was pitted against GeForce GTX 465, Radeon HD 5830, and some older GeForce 200 series cards. Tests included 3DMark06, 3DMark Vantage (performance preset) and 3DMark Vantage (extreme preset). While in 3DMark06 and 3DMark Vantage (P) it outpaces the HD 5830, the HD 5830 edges past it in 3DMark Vantage (X). The two also trade blows in DirectX 11 benchmarks. While the GTX 460 maintains some lead over the HD 5830 in older game tests, the HD 5830 does manage to outperform in some tests.

ASUS steals the limelight with cloud computing devices eee pad, eee tablet at Computex Taipei 2010

AMD Fusion APU Comes to Life at Computex

AMD demonstrated AMD Fusion APU – delivering powerful CPU and GPU capabilities for HD, 3D and data-intensive workloads in a single-die processor– demonstrated APU accelerated Internet Explorer 9 and DirectX 11 rendering and special effects.

This is done by combing a GPU and a CPU into one device has been something that both Intel and AMD have been working towards for a long time. The idea is that by combing the CPU and the GPUY you can get a device, called an APU, which can do both functions, save space on the board of the computer, and reduce power consumption.

AMD plans to release two different APUs: Llano for mainstream laptops and desktops and the low-power Ontario for smaller laptops, netbooks and other devices. We know that Llano will have up to four cores and will be manufactured at 32nn by GlobalFoundries, the semiconductor foundry established by the spin-off of AMD’s manufacturing operations. AMD still hasn’t said who will manufacture the dual-core Ontario, though there have been reports that TSMC is manufacturing it on its 40nm bulk silicon process. Nevertheless both are sampling now-industry jargon meaning that AMD is showing it to select customers–and will be released sometime in the first half of 2011, Bergman said.

AMD showed two demonstrations of a “low-power Fusion APU,” which presumably refers to a dual-core Ontario. The first showed it ability to play a demanding DirectX 11 game, Rebellion’s Aliens vs. Predator. Bergman noted that this was the same game AMD used last fall to demonstrate the capabilities of its high-end discrete GPU. “Can you imagine getting performance of that quality in a netbook this size?” he asked the audience while holding up a standard netbook that could accommodate an Ontario APU. The second demonstration showed the performance in Internet Explorer with and without APU acceleration using a Browser Flip test in the latest IE 9 Platform Preview. The performance increased from 2-3 frames per second without acceleration to about 60 fps using the APU.

Looks like we should be expecting more AMD solutions for tablets, low power notebooks in the months to come.
