Intel Broadwell does not come in LGA packaging but soldered on board.

Posted on 28 November 2012 by

According to a report on SemiAccurate, it is said that the upcoming Broadwell will not come in an LGA package, so no removable CPU. The news was leaked from Japan PC Watch.

So what is the impact ? Most end users might not feel much of a difference as most users still buy a processor + motherboard bundle anyway. The difference is that you can’t really choose which processor to pair with your board as they come soldered on.

Enthusiast who are always changing processors as fast as changing underwear will find themselves shut off in a way. Web sites that leaks information will find themselves shut off too as it would be difficult for some sources to ‘smuggle’ Engineering board with solder processors out.

One of the nightmares will be inventory control. Distributors will have to stock up massive amount of stocks (board with CPU integrated).

The worst nightmware for mainboard manufacturers is that they might be forced out of the competition in a way. The reason is simple, Intel might be having their own brand boards with CPU integrated and will compete head to head with their products. This might also force such manufactuers to divert their attention to the other processor maker, AMD which still remains attractive in terms of price/performance.

Actually, we already expected this day to come. First, the industry consolidated and killed almost all the chipset makers. The chipset makers ended up making South bridges and on board DVB tuners. Now they probably have to give up making south bridges as SATA 6Gbps or USB3 controllers are all integrated into the single chipset.

Next was the integration of higher quality graphics into the chipset, with that you don’t even need an external graphics card unless you are crazy over 3D games.

Everyone out there is having their own game plan. Look at Apple, and Microsoft now making their own hardware and software. If they can increase their market share and profit margin, do you think they will care about whether mainboard manufacturers in Taiwan will survive ?

In fact we spoke to a number of people about this matter. We somewhat agree that Intel might do that low to mid range notebooks and motherboards. They willleave the higher end boards with socketed designs. By doing so, they might not be pushing customers away to AMD. In fact, AMD Hudson E350 are all socketed designs but their Trinity series (FM2) and 990FX boards which are considered the higher end are still socket design.

If Intel goes for soldered design and flood the market with thier own brand boards, the OEM manufacturers will stand to gain for more orders. 3rd party manufacturers like ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, ECS, Biostar, ASRock might have serious problems if they can’t get hold of processors (for soldering onto their boards). If our prediction is right, the higher end boards might still adopt socketed design but how many percent of their revenue of the motherboard manufacturers comes from the expensive boards?

Secondly, the other mid range board makers will still continue to compete with socketed designs. They will also deliver some high end boards but that might not sell that well either. They might end up selling more AMD. Perhaps a third group might evolve making ARM based boards one day.

So at the end of the day, motherboard manufacturers will be here to stay. It is just that how will they will channel their resources into socket or non socketed boards.

AMD latest A series quad core desktop can overclock to 6.5GHz on LN2

Posted on 27 September 2012 by

According to a news article on techworld australia, it is said that the upcoming Advanced Micro Devices’ latest A-series quad-core desktop processors runs at up to 4.2GHz, but can be overclocked to 6.5GHz with liquid nitrogen cooling, the company said.

The two unlocked processors, which we have already listed as A10-5800K and the A8-5600K
are faster and cheaper than competitive Intel chips, said AMD desktop products manager Adam Kozak during a conference call to discuss the new chips.

Compared to the equivalent Intel, the AMD is in the US$100 to $150 price range, Kozak said. Intel’s unlockable processors start at $216, according to a Sept. 2 price list.

The chips are based on the Piledriver microarchitecture, which is also used in the latest laptop processors code-named Trinity released by AMD starting in the middle of this year. AMD’s internal benchmarks revealed the new chips provide 25 percent to 37 percent overall faster system performance than the older desktop chips code-named Llano, which were released last year.

The unlocked chip A10-5800K has 4MB Cache rated 100W and has a max. clock speed turbo at 4.2GHz. The internal graphics clock is rated at 800MHz and has 384 cores. The A8-5600K has a maximum clock speed of 3.9GHz and 256 graphics cores with 760MHz GPU clock speed.

AMD did not reveal actual pricing but it should be in the range of USD 120 in units of 1000. The processor will be available from Oct 2 2012.

AMD new Socket FM2 Trinity boards support AMP (AMD Memory Profile)

Posted on 24 September 2012 by

If you are an Intel user, you would probably be aware of XMP. AMD in it’s upcoming motherboards featuring the Socket FM2 will support AMP. AMP or AMD memory profile it AMD’s version of the Intel Extreme Memory Profiles (XMP) which amounts to known-safe automatic overclock settings. The AMP profiles are stored in the DDR3 memory modules and can be read by supporting motherboards. With such ram modules, it is easy to configure the board to work well with these RAMs as the voltages, ram timings are already preset.

So far, Biostar, ECS and ASRock Socket FM2 boards will feature this capability. It will be useful for users who just wants less headaches plug and play solution. For those who loves to meddle with ram timings, this might not be that important as you can manually adjust your ram timings anyway.

So, will you buy AMP certified modules at a premium ? Discuss.

Review of ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional-M Ivy Bridge with Intel Core i5-3570K

Posted on 09 July 2012 by

ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional-M
bluetooth 9 Jul 2012

In gaming competitions, most users will want to equip themselves with their gaming rig. A gaming notebook does give you the portability but it lacks the processor power to run gpu intensive games. The better solution is to equip yourself with a smaller footprint desktop PC. The ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 Professional-M definitely fits the bill as it is a mATX, small in size yet big in performance that matches it’s full fledge size cousins.

This board based on the Intel Z77 chipset supports 4 DIMM slots with Dual Channel DDR3 2800+(OC). In addition, with the Core i5-3x70k processors, you are ready to use it as a machine for playing less GPU intensive games or use it for work. That is thanks to the Intel HD graphics built in to the processor. The board supports output ports DVI-D, D-SUB and HDMI.

For those who require more graphics power, plug in your own graphics card and you can run 2 x PCIe 3.0 x16 Slots, Supports AMD Quad CrossFireX™, 3-Way CrossFireX, CrossFireX™ and NVIDIA® Quad SLI™, SLI™. You can also improve the onboard graphics performance by adding a single graphics card and enable Lucid Virtu MVP.

When it comes to heatsink mounting, this is something I loved, C.C.O (combo Cooler option). It helps you to save some costs, reusnig your older LGA775 heatsinks on this board with the 4 extra mounting holes.

Gamers want  a responsive system, ASRock understands that and has equipped it with PCie Gigabit LAN. Moreover, it has a 7.1 CH HD Audio with Content Protection (Realtek ALC898 Audio Codec), Supports THX TruStudio™ for audio support.

ASRock has also bundled software to speed up your system, they include XFast RAM which is a virtual ram system. With it enabled, it can be used a Readyboost drive to speed up access to cache files etc. XFast LAN on the other hand lowers latency of your system for the utmost packet for best LAN performance. XFast USB speeds up USB transfers with a On/Off switch.

Other than that, there is OMG which is online management in BIOS that allows certain days and time of the day for internet access which will be welcomed by parents to control when their children accesses the internet. There is also a dehumidifier function on board which reduces humid and prolongs the life of the components on board. The BIOS also has a UEFI system browser which shows you the various components in visual, showing what is connected etc.

As it is a Intel Z77 based board, it defniitely supports the Intel functions - Intel® Smart Connect, Intel® Rapid Start and the Lucid Virtu Universal MVP for speeding up graphics performance when an add on graphcis card is inserted onto the board.

F-Stream is another software that allows you to change the settings of the system all within Windows 7. You can fine tune the voltages, clk speed etc.

Running DDR3-3733 on ASUS Z77 board using an exploit in CPU-Z?

Posted on 24 April 2012 by

Lately, we see various motherboard manufacturers posted memory records one after another. It started from DDR3-2600 and all the way to DDR3-3733.

According to the email, it is said that the result showing DDR3-3733 is bogus. The tester uses a CPU-Z bug to achieve this high ram speed.

According to the email, this result can be duplicated by doing the following :

Use CPU-Z version 1.592, tune the RAM to DDR3-2600. It will be shown as DDR3-3466.
If you use the newer version, it will still be DDR3-2600.

Try it and let us know if you can duplicate it.

Kingston HyperX KHX2400C11D3K4/8GX Review
Bluetooth 23 Mar 2012

With more boards supporting overclock speeds of DDR3-2400, ram manufactures are releasing new modules that are capable of running these overclocked speeds with latest processors and chipsets in market. As these new modules comes in a pack of 4, it is just best suited to pair it with the Intel X79 system as it supports Quad Channel DDR3.

Today, we take a look at Kingston KHX2400C11D3K4/8GX.

Kingston’s KHX2400C11D3K4/8GX is a kit of four 256M x 64-bit (2GB) DDR3-2400 CL11 SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM)
1Rx8 memory modules, based on eight 256M x 8-bit DDR3 FBGA components per module. Each module kit supports
Intel® XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles). Total kit capacity is 8GB. Each module kit has been tested to run at DDR3-2400 at
a low latency timing of 11-13-11 at 1.65V. The SPDs are programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR3-1333 timing of
9-9-9 at 1.5V. Each 240-pin DIMM uses gold contact fingers.

The JEDEC standard electrical and mechanical specifications are as follows

XMP TIMING PARAMETERS
• JEDEC: DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9 @1.5V
• XMP Profile #1: D3-2400 CL11-13-11 @1.65V
