ASUS Launches the RT-N53 Black Diamond dual band wireless router

Bringing the best experience in wireless coverage for home & office

Singapore (7th February, 2011), ASUS today launched the RT-N53 Black Diamond dual band wireless router, designed to bring the best home and office networking experience with data rates of up to 600Mpbs. With its slim and elegant wall-mountable design, space constraints will never be an issue. Its universal repeater mode extends and enhances Wi-Fi network coverage. No software installations are needed for accessing the network and with its intuitive user-friendly interface; users can easily configure router settings.

Extended Wi-Fi Coverage

The repeater mode can rebroadcast the signal to extend wireless range if a direct connection cannot be established. If space is an issue, the RT-N53 can be wall mounted. Once set up, users will just need to scan for the most viable Wi-Fi signal and connect it to any SSID of choice.

Dual Band Feature

The RT-N53 doubles the wireless performance and bandwidth with simultaneous 2.4GHz, 5GHz bands with speeds of up to 600Mbps concurrently. The 2.4GHz band lets users download files and browse the web, while the 5GHz band takes care of HD content streams. With the dual band feature, users will be able to achieve optimized speeds at all times.

Enhanced Network Security
The RT-N53 features enhanced network security with support for up to four SSIDs. It allows single independent wireless networks to be created, each with their own performance and security settings, enabling users to prioritize a secure but high-bandwidth network for personal use alongside a more open low-bandwidth network for guests.

Plug-n-surf and Hassle-free Management
ASUS QIS and EZ UI offer users an intuitive router setup without the need for set-up manuals or software installations. Run any browser and the QIS wizard will automatically connect to the internet no matter what OS is being used. The EZ UI provides users with a user-friendly graphics-based management interface through which they can easily manage their network settings.

*Please take note that all repeaters, including this Universal Wireless Repeater mode, will sacrifice half of the bandwidth available from the primary router for clients wirelessly connected to the repeater. Currently, the RT-N53 only supports the 2.4GHz repeater setting.

Intel Thunderbolt capable motherboards to appear in Apr 2012

Posted on 28 December 2011 by bluetooth

A few weeks ago, we attended an event by Promise technology, showing off it’s Thunderbolt NAS devices. As Apple is the only company that builds Thunderbolt capable notebooks, PC which is based on Intel processors and chipsets do not have motherboards which cater to this new transmission standard. According to Digitimes, Intel has recently notified its partners that the company will fully release its Thunderbolt technology in April of 2012 with several first-tier PC players already preparing to launch Thunderbolt-supported motherboards, notebooks and desktop PCs, according to sources from PC players.

Most board makers are still using third party USB 3.0 solutions while the Apple has it adopted into its products such as monitor, MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air and MacBook Mini, it has strongly boosted demand. With the price of Thunderbolt technology dropping in 2H 2012, it is expected that board makers and notebook makers will adopt this technology onto to PC platform.

Currently Sony is expected to adopt Thunderbolt technology into its product lines with players such as Asustek Computer also expected to adopt the technology into their high-end notebook products. Gigabyte Technology, which has been aggressively adopting new transmission technology into its product line, is also expected to launch Thunderbolt-featured motherboard by April 2012 to compete against other brands.

Here is a link to the Promise SmartStor products which feature the Thunderbolt technology.

M1 Fibre Broadband 100MBps tuning guide

M1 Fibre Broadband 100MBps tuning Guide
Bluetooth 15 Mar 2011

Fibre broadband is not new. A lot of users already have it at home but aren’t able to get the speeds they want. IT Show 2011 is just over and I bet most people who have gotten hold of the Huawei residential gateway are eager to know how you could maximise the network speed of your system.

For M1, if you have got their 100Mbps Fibre broadband which delivers up to 100Mbps down and 50Mbps up, you would have to fine tune the Residential Gateway from Huawei. The Huawei RG256 is rented to the subscriber and comes with a fixed voice line. That is probably the reason why many people got it but are also complaining about bad speeds.

What we are going do in this guide is to make things simple. We look at the FIX Ethernet direct connection from the port on the RG256 to our netbook. We will see the configurations required on both.

In the next page, we detail the configuration screens of the RG256 that is required for a better speed.

How to hook up to the Fibre Broadband powered by OpenNet
Bluetooth 3 Sep 2010

Most readers would be familiar with hooking onto the ADSL or Cable broadband. When it comes to the new Fibre Broadband, many are still pondering on what equipment is required to get up to speed.

One thing for sure, your existing ADSL or Cable Modem would no longer be required. If you own a Wireless Router or any networking devices, these devices will still function just as it is for switched ports at home or at work. In our example, we will reference the M1 broadband which should be similar to what other operators provide.

Before you sign up with any Retail Service provider (RSP), you should already have the Opennet box installed at your premises. This box is also known as the Termination Point (TP). You can check at http://rollout.opennet.com.sg on when your estate will be wired up.

If you have that installed by OpenNet, you can now choose the RSP and plan you would like to sign up for. Once that is done, Nucleus Connect, the OpCo will install a box as shown in the picture below (left hand side). This box is known as the Optical network Terminal (ONT). This box has 4 ports which will 1 port will be provisioned for service. The ONT will be connected to the Termination Point via a optical fire patch cable.

Singapore Service providers to offer next gen fiber broadband network services as early as September 2010

While not all homes and offices are connected to the nation wide fiber network Opennet, Channel News Asia has a report indicating that one such retail service provider has confirmed that they are ready to sell services to home and offices by 1st September 2010. Currently only about 64 per cent of Singapore homes will be fibre-optic ready by the end of the year. By 2012, all Singapore homes and offices will be connected to Singapore’s ultra high-speed broadband network.

ASUS Gives Visitors a Look into Tomorrow at Computex 2010
Extends Lead in Cloud Computing and Gaming Arenas with Industry-changing
Eee Pad, Eee Tablet, Garmin-Asus A10 Smartphone and a Host of ROG Innovations

[Taiwan, Taipei, 31 May 2010] ASUS’ leadership in innovation and design will once again be underlined at this year’s Computex exhibition in Taipei, where the homegrown IT giant is set to showcase a wide range of products across five major categories: cloud computing, gaming, enthusiast PC components, multimedia and green computing.

ASUS Cloud Computing Solutions: Accessing Data Anywhere and in Real Time has Never Been this Easy

As the leader in cloud computing, ASUS offers the broadest spread of cloud-connected devices with on-the-fly data and multimedia sharing capabilities that consumers need in this age of interconnectedness.

Without question the foremost cloud computing device that will be on show at Computex 2010 is the ASUS Eee Tablet, one of the world’s most accurate and sensitive digital note-taking devices. Sporting a 2450 dpi resolution touch screen, a built-in camera which takes high resolution photos that users can write notes on, and preinstalled with an assortment of notepad templates, the Eee Tablet provides students and mobile business professionals with everything they need to get through a day. The Eee Tablet also serves as an exceptionally competent e-reader, offering almost lag-free page turns and a paper-like display that allows users to read for long periods without eye fatigue. The Eee Tablet features USB and MicroSD connectivity for easy syncing with a PC.

Also set to steal the limelight is the ASUS Eee Pad, an ultra-slim and light yet high-performance slate device designed to provide users with a “real time, real life and real human” cloud computing experience. The Eee Pad is available in two configurations. The 12” Eee Pad EP121 is a full-featured slate computer that serves as a multimedia player, e-reader, compact PC and Internet device. Powered by a CULV Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor and the Windows® 7 Home Premium operating system, it handles multitasking effortlessly, enabling users to check their email and calendars, have video conferences, and process Microsoft Word and Excel documents simultaneously. The Eee Pad EP121 offers two convenient modes of character input—an embedded virtual keyboard and a special docking station-cum-keyboard—and delivers more than 10 hours of smooth, continuous computing. Users seeking added mobility can consider the 10’’ Eee Pad EP101TC, which comes in at a mere 675g and a slim, pocket-friendly 12.2mm. The Eee Pad EP101TC runs on Windows Embedded Compact 7, a complete toolkit with the latest Windows 7-based technologies and tools that create engaging user experiences and delivers connectivity to the Windows world. It provides a familiar full-featured experience across various connected devices and cloud computing services. Users will also be able to move their favorite applications to the main desktop with ease.

ZyXEL to showcase 300Mbps Wireless N access point at IT Show 2010

Posted on 10 March 2010 by bluetooth

If you are attending the IT SHOW 2010 starting tomorrow at SUNTEC Singapore, do not forget to check out the ZyXEL WAP3205 Wireless N Access point.

The ZyXEL WAP3205 is a 300Mbps Wireless N access point with advanced features that enables home and Soho users to upgrade wireless speed and coverage easily for their wireless networks. With a data transfer rate of up to 300Mbps*, which is 6 times faster than 11g, users can enjoy high-speed network connection and high-definition video streaming no matter where they are, at home or the office. Better yet, it also works with existing 802.11b and 802.11g networks.

The ZyXEL WAP3205 supports five different modes – access point, wireless client, wireless bridge, WDS repeater and universal repeater.

In its wireless client mode, the WAP3205 gives non-wireless capable devices such as modems, set-top boxes, digital media adapters and storage devices wireless capability simply by using a Ethernet cable to connect to the WAP3205 and without any driver too. The ZyXEL WAP3205 can also allow different groups of users to access different networks through its multiple SSID support. Users can assign different policies and functions to each SSID, and thus increase the flexibility and efficiency of the network infrastructure.

Security setup for the WAP3205 is a breeze with the one-touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) push button. Instead of entering a pass phrase, users can authenticate a new device on the network by pressing a
single button or by entering an automatically generated PIN code. With the button option, users could even setup the wireless configuration and encryption with just a simple click.

The ZyXEL WAP3205, 5-in-1 access point, offers users a wide array of functionality for flexible applications thus making it ideal for wireless networking in any environment.
