Dell Latitude 6430u Ultrabook review
Bluetooth 11 May 2013

Tablets are flooding the market in different sizes and shapes. Although they cater to a new generation of users who loves apps for functionality, such Windows 8 tablets do not come with a nicely built functional keyboard and expansion capabilities.

dell latitude

Tablets are handy but it has a 10 inches or smaller screen. When it comes to the business world, it may not be practical as most of the users require a bigger screen and a nice keyboard to type and view comfortably.  A large 14″ 1366×768 anti glare LED screen and a tactile keyboard is definitely the preferred platform for the working professionals.

Today, we take a closer look at the Dell Latitude 6430u Ultrabook, a no frills durable ultrabook.

The Dell Latitude 6430u is thin slim 1.69kg ultrabook. Flip open the screen and you will notice the sturdiness of the ultrabook. In fact, the Dell Latitude 6340u is the only Ultrabook tested to 14 MIL-STD-810G standards. The keyboard is somewhat water proof. The silver black colour scheme makes it stand out when illuminated by the white keyboard light.

Specfications wise, the unit is powered by the 3rd generation Intel Core i5-3427U at 1.8GHz. To speed things up, the unit comes with a 128GB Samsung SSD PM830 mSATA. Loading Windows 8 to login screen takes less than 6 seconds from power up. The unit we review comes with a 6-cell (60Whr) Li-polymer battery with ExpressCharge.

The graphics inbuilt within the processor is a Intel HD Graphics 4000 graphics and supports the 14″ HD display at 1366×768.

The Latitude 6430u is also vPro-enabled for easy management and comes with TPM and Dell Data Protection│Encryption.

It combines the great style and user experience consumers demand with the features IT requires.”

The HP ElitePad also helps small workgroups connect with HP Wireless Hotspot, a desktop application that allows users to share a wireless internet connection and network bandwidth. (9)

Additional user-experience software includes the CyberLink Media suite, which enables users to manage and create audio and video content with the same easy-to-use interface as other HP business PCs. Sony today announced the launch of the new VAIO E Series 14P, based on Intel 3rd generation Core i7 CPU with Radeon HD 7670M discrete GPU

Posted on 26 April 2012 by

Sony today announced the launch of the new VAIO E Series 14P, a 14-inch notebook that is designed with everyone in mind. Made for smarter and easier everyday computing, the notebook comes equipped with a 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i7 CPU, as well as the AMD Radeon™ HD 7670M discrete GPU (VRAM: 1GB) to cope with the stresses of daily usage. With its unique design and colour variations, everyone can express their personal style this spring with the new VAIO E Series 14P.

Stylish New ‘Wrap Design’ with Colour Accents and ‘Personalisation Kit’

Whether you are at home, on campus or at the nearest café, the new VAIO E14P stands out from the crowd with its soft, discreetly reassuring ‘wrap design’. Available in five fresh colours – white, black, pink, silver or gun metallic – its sleek looks are subtly accented by the complementary coloured detailing around the notebook’s edge[1], touchpad and keyboard, with a premium diamond-cut finish VAIO logo[2] on the lid to cap it off.

In addition, the VAIO E14P comes with a ‘personalisation kit’ consisting of a matching mouse and keyboard skin, allowing for a customisable look reflecting each individual’s taste and personality.

Long Battery Life Realised by Hybrid Graphics and ‘Rapid Wake + Eco’

With battery life of up to 5.5 hours[3], the VAIO E14P keeps you up and running for longer, providing plenty of power to satisfy your requirements for both work and play.

To conserve battery life, the VAIO E14P switches on its discrete GPU for demanding tasks like games, videos and photo editing, and automatically turns it off for less intensive applications. The notebook’s endurance is further enhanced by the efficient VAIO Display and energy-efficient processors, as well as an on-board optical drive that shuts down to zero power consumption when it’s not needed.

Also, with the new ‘Rapid Wake + Eco’ feature, you’ll be ready for action in moments. This energy-saving mode puts your VAIO into an ultra-low power consuming deep sleep, keeping all your data safe for up to ten days[4]. Open the notebook’s lid and you’re up and running in seconds, with all your files just as you left them.

Enjoy Loud and Clear Sound with xLOUD, Clear Phase and Dolby Home Theatre V4

The new VAIO E14P also provides for effortlessly clear and sparkling audio quality, to match its good looks. Unique to Sony, its ‘xLOUD’ and ‘Clear Phase’ technology boosts volume levels, without distorting the sound for impressive-sounding movies and games. Alternatively, you can switch to Dolby® Home Theatre® V4 for a rich, cinema-style audio experience – no matter whether you’re using its built-in speakers, external loudspeakers or headphones.

Various Features to Enrich the Experience

Video chats are now also clearer and crisper, thanks to its built-in HD web camera powered by an ‘Exmor for PC’ sensor. Allowing your friends and family to see you in sharper detail, higher contrast and richer colours; you can now facilitate your most intimate conversations even in low light settings, where other web cameras struggle with grainy and fuzzy images.

The generously-sized multi-gesture touchpad offers a large clickable surface for intuitive, ‘button-free’ control. There’s plenty of space to navigate pages, edit photos and more with its intuitive fingertip scroll, flick, pinch/zoom and pivot movement controls.

The Gesture Control feature lets you interact with your computer using instinctive hand movements. Just hold your hand up in front of the web camera, and swipe left or right to flick through web pages or your photo gallery. Pull your hand down to pause a slideshow or your music playback, and even adjust your music volume with ‘rotating’ hand movements. Gesture Control is currently supported by Windows® Media Player, Windows® Internet Explorer® 9, Microsoft® PowerPoint®, and PowerDVD.

Coming in five fresh colours – white, black, pink, silver or gun metallic – the sleek VAIO E Series 14P will be available in Singapore from 4 May 2012 at all Sony stores and Sony-authorised outlets, and will retail for S$1,399 (SVE14A15FGB/W/P) and S$1,599 (SVE14A16FGS) respectively.

Intel will postpone mass shipment of Ivy Bridge processors to June with small volumes available for April launch

Posted on 17 February 2012 by

Mass shipments of Ivy Bridge processors, the next generation of Intel will be postponed to June 2012. Small volumes will be available during launch though in April 2012.

Intel postposted the mass shipment because most first tier notebook vendors still have huge volumes of Sandy Bridge processors. This is because of the low sales volume of Intel notebooks due to a weak economy outlook.

The new Ivy bridge is the next generation processor for notebooks. As tablets and Windows 8 will be the trend in 2012, We expect notebooks will have a hard time in Q4 2012 as it will have to compete head to head with Windows 8 based tablets which probably are also lightweight, dockable with keyboard and comes with a touch screen.

The notebook will probably go into obsolence in the coming years with tablets running quad core and less power hungry processors available from different vendors.

HP Envy 14 beats edition BIOS update solves battery indicator error problem

Posted on 18 January 2012 by

If you own an earlier version of the HP Envy 14 beats edition based on the Intel Core i5 processor, you would have experience the battery indicator issue. This is a well known problem since year end 2010 when the product was released.

In the past, no matter how you charge the battery, Windows 7 64 bits edition will always report a battery life of 1 hr 3 mins. Although most end users aren’t that perturbed with the error as there are third party application BatteryBar that can report the a more accurate value of 3hrs 3 mins.

To correct this issue, HP has just released a BIOS update for the HP Envy 14 beats edition dated DEC 16 2011 which you can download from this page.

I have also update the BIOS on my HP Envy and now it reports the correct battery charge level.  After a full charge, the system reports 2 hrs 50 mins battery power which is quite close to what the software Batterybar reports 3 hrs 3 mins.

Sony Unveils New VAIO S Series of Notebooks for Mobility and Better Performance

Posted on 06 July 2011 by

Sony Unveils New VAIO S Series of Notebooks for
Mobility and Better Performance
Slim aluminum body and flat design makes it easy to be carried around

(Singapore, 5 July 2011) – Sony has announced a new line-up for the VAIO S Series of notebooks, the perfect balanced mobile notebook that is crafted to be carried around in your daily life. In addition to the current VPCSB model, we are introducing the new VPCSA unit with a thinner and lighter body that provides better performance for your option.

Perfectly Balanced Performance and High Mobility
The new line-up for S Series comes with the Intel® Core™ i7 processor and AMD Radeon™ HD 6630M GPU with 1GB VRAM. The unit has a Performance Switch that supports Dynamic Hybrid Graphic System. This switch allows users to easily choose between SPEED mode for fastest performance or STAMINA mode for a longer battery life.

The S series has six hours of battery life; however, an optional Sheet Battery is available to extend the battery life for up to 12 hours , which is double of the primary battery capability. With this option, you do not have to worry about looking for an electric outlet all day long. There is a dedicated battery charger that you can leave on the desk to charge the Sheet Battery. The optional Sheet Battery is also full-flat which makes the S series easy to be carried around even with the Sheet Battery attached.

Quick Boot and Fast Operation with SSD
The VAIO S Series comes with SSD features Quick Boot and fast operation. With the Quick Boot function, the computer starts up from just 17 seconds from shutdown. This is very convenient for users who do not want to waste any minute at work or study.

Advanced LCD
The new line-up for the S series comes with a 13.3 inch wide screen with 1600 x900 HD resolution. The LCD is anti-reflective glossy finished, which means it is coated with low reflective coating on the surface. This provides a high contrast image, and prevents eyestrain that comes from staring at the monitor for a long time.

Crafted to be Carried
The VPCSA model weighs 1.68 kg and has a 23.3 mm slim body, making it easy to be carried around in a bag. Its aluminum palm rest and magnesium body contribute to its thinness and lightness, while maintaining ruggedness for mobile use.

The hinge is not visible from the front, offering a clean and simple look around the display. A more spacious palm rest and touch pad area contributes to comfortable usability. In addition, the six-sided edge design provides an attractive look no matter what angle the VAIO S Series is being viewed from. This construction succeeds in realising superior robustness and structural integrity.

Usability for smooth operation
To further increase the usability, it comes with backlit keyboard, which makes it easier to type in dimly-lit environments such as during on-board a flight or in a conference room. Sony Introduces Lightweight and Powerful VAIO Z Series for the Professional on the Go
Exceptional hexa-shell design and Sheet Battery provide both mobility and extended charge

(Singapore, 5 July 2011) – Sony today announced the launch of its new VAIO Z Series, an ultimate mobile PC that blends ultra-desirable styling and premium carbon fibre without compromising on its specifications and innovative productivity features. Weighing little over a kilogram, the new VAIO Z Series notebook PC from Sony is created for mobile professionals who demand absolute performance and mobility. In the office or on the road, this class-leading business notebook helps demanding users work more efficiently with the ultimate on-the-move computing power.

Thin, Light, yet Powerful

The all-new VAIO Z Series weighs only 1.165 kg and is extremely thin at a mere 16.65 mm. Its high-resolution full HD display with anti-reflective glossy finish provides an exquisite image with vivid colours covering 96% of the Adobe RGB colour gamut.

The VAIO Z is also equipped with the 2nd generation Intel® Core i7 processor and ultra-high speed 3rd generation SSD RAID, offering remarkably fast operation. Moreover, Quick Boot saves precious time when you’re in a hurry, loading Genuine Windows® 7 Professional in about 14 seconds. But equally important is that all this was packed into a slim profile notebook.

Power Media Dock™

The performance of VAIO Z Series is taken to new extremes by the unique Power Media Dock, a docking station that links with VAIO via an optical cable. The proprietary port can also be used to attach regular USB devices to the VAIO when it is not docked. It comes supplied with a stylish design-match stand, and the Dock is also layout-free.

Featuring high-speed I/O data transfer based on the architecture codenamed ‘Light Peak’, the Power Media Dock boosts graphics performance while providing a wide variety of connectivity options and slot-in Blu-ray Disc™ drive.

With a built-in AMD Radeon™ HD 6650M with 1GB VRAM, this high-performance graphics accelerator assures crisp and smooth results, from 3D CAD to gaming.

The VAIO Z Series can manage up to four displays (including the notebook screen) via HDMI and/or VGA output ports when the Power Media Dock is added. With this configuration, the VAIO Z Series makes a compelling choice for design, finance and science professionals who need to work across several screens simultaneously.

Double your battery life with Sheet Battery

The VAIO Z Series offers 6.5 hours[1] of continuous use. By attaching an optional Sheet Battery, the battery life will be extended to 13 hours, to get more than a day’s work done on a single charge. The Sheet Battery can be charged separately from the PC and added on without removing the internal battery. Its flat shape also makes the VAIO Z Series easy to carry around even when the Sheet Battery is attached.

Hexa-shell design and robustness

The VAIO Z Series takes cutting-edge styling by Sony to new extremes, with a ‘full-flat’ body and display lid that are both crafted in tough, ultra-light carbon fibre. Both the VAIO Z Series and Power Media Dock feature a unique hexagonal edge design, adding a unique look while reinforcing durability.

VAIO Z Series delivers a richer communication experience. Digital noise-cancelling headphones will let you listen to music without distraction. The beam-forming microphone directivity and HD web camera powered by Exmor™ technology ensures clearer communication. Also, its Backlit keyboard automatically illuminates when the sensor detects that the room is too dark. Only the letters glow in the dark due to the use of an inorganic silicon EL material.

The new 2011 VAIO Z Series of ultra-mobile performance notebook PC will be available in Singapore at all Sony authorised retailers from end July 2011.
