In Day 1, we take a look at the exhibits first at ASRock booth. They have tons of boards. One of such is an unreleased product based on a Intel P67 chipset is also on the show. Another is P55 Extreme3 which is world’s first board to support 2 front panel USB 3 ports. The focus this year is on their new HTPC the Vision 3D w/ Aiwi.

As usual, the main focus this year would still falls onto the mainboard manufacturers and peripherals.The probably newest thing would be the upcoming Intel chipsets, handheld device and slim notebooks. In this Day 0 Coverage, we will take a glimpse of what to expect from some of these big players in the market in the next few pages.

Hsu points out that after being the first in the world to unveil the 10” Wind U series in 2008, MSI was first in 2009 to roll out light X-Slim equipped with the ULV core. Now, notebooks can be thin, light, and chic, while still being big enough to use comfortably. Innovative capabilities like these have caused the MSI brand to shine on the global NB market. MSI is now among the top ten brands in some 30 countries and is expected to become one of the top ten brand names in the world overall in 2011.

This year, MSI’s innovative energy in terms of product development and design has gone into overdrive. MSI will be showing 30-plus notebook computers in six major NB series in booth L607 on the fourth floor of the TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall during Computex, June 1-5.

MSI Marketing Director Sam Chern states that of the notebook computers being displayed at the exhibition, those with the most outstanding performance and multimedia in the G series are the 17” GX740 and GT760 and the 15.6” GX640 and GT660 models. Of these, MSI worked in cooperation with world-renowned sound system manufacturer Dynaudio to create the newest kings in gaming notebooks—the GT660 and GT760. They come equipped with MSI’s own TDE+ technology to give you overclocking at the touch of a finger, instantly boosting processor and graphics performance for new levels of gaming enjoyment that could never be had with traditional NBs. World champions Fnatic and US champions Evil Geniuses will be present at the exhibition hall on 1-5 June. Urban slims for mobile life in the city—U & X series

To meet the needs of individuals on the go, five models, each from the MSI’s Wind U series and the X-Slim series, will be showcased. These include from the U series the 10” U135 and U140 as well as the U160, which received Germany’s iF Product Design Award, and the 12.1” U200 and U250. And from the X series, the 13” X340, which just received the Taiwan Excellence Award, the 13” X350 and X360, the 14” X420, and the 15.6” X620 which also won Germany’s iF Product Design Award. The U160, which runs for up to 15 hours on one charge, received Germany’s iF Product Design Award for 2010. The U160 allows you to run about all day on one charge.

The U250 features AMD’s newest power-sipping, high-performance duo core Genevo CPU and MSI’s own power-saving designs. The U250, which comes with trendy Color Film Print, received international certification from Energy Star and offers twice the battery life per charge of conventional NBs. MSI’s X-Slim series, which has received a number of awards, is characterized by a raised black diamond, an all-new power-saving duo core with souped-up processor and powerful 3D high definition display performance. New world of wireless entertainment—MSI WiMAX laptops, Slatebook

To meet the world’s fourth-generation mobile telecommunications needs, MSI pulled no stops in developing and producing WiMAX notebooks. A number of its new 10”-15.6” models support WiMAX and are available for purchase in ten countries on four continents, including the US and Japan. MSI will be displaying all its newest models in the WiMAX area at Computex 2010, including the Wind series of netbooks (U135 and U140) as well as the 13.4” X350 and the 14” X420 of the X-Slim series, so you can experience the ultimate in new levels of speed, low power consumption, and high performance in mobile Internet devices.

Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS) plans to launch several new notebooks and netbooks at at Computex 2010, according to the company.

ECS will showcase three 10.1-inch netbooks, the V10IS1, V10IS2 and T10IL, featuring Intel’s Atom processor as well as built-in Bluetooth, WiMAX and HSUPA (3.75G) communication modules.

The company also has a product line, the CMPC, for netbooks that are designed to help children learn. The company’s CMPC E11IS will feature an Intel Atom processor, 10.1-inch panel, a 160GB hard drive or 32GB solid state drive (SSD), 1.3-megapixel webcam, built-in Wi-Fi/WiMAX modules, and a battery that allows nine hours of running time.

For the notebook segment, ECS will have two ultra-thin models, the T21 (11.6-inch) and T30 (13.3-inch) which use Intel’s ultra low voltage platform. The company will also showcase three traditional notebooks, the C42II (14-inch), C52II (15.6-inch) and R42II (14-inch) based on Intel’s Calpella platform.

Green Notebooks—U Series Bamboo Collection
Last year, ASUS became the first notebook manufacturer to receive the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and Carbon Footprint certifications. It is also the only notebook manufacturer to receive the EU Flower certificate. These accolades bear testament to ASUS’ commitment to the environment and green product design. And that continues with the introduction of the U Series Bamboo Collection.

A result of ASUS’ Green Material Innovation initiatives, designers have taken advantage of bamboo’s regenerative characteristics and relatively short maturity growth period of 3 to 5 years, and developed the material for the U Series Bamboo Collection’s lid and palm rest. This reduces plastics usage by 20 percent, and gives an elegant and organic feel to the otherwise drab feel of today’s notebooks. On top of that, the U Series Bamboo notebook features a mercury-free LED-backlit panel.

The bamboo theme continues with its 100 percent recyclable packaging, where the material is used as a substitute for paper. Packaging volume is also reduced by 10 percent when compared to other similar products of similar size.

Green Netbooks—Eee PC™ 1005PE
The energy-efficient Eee PC™ 1005PE features a mercury-free LED-backlit panel and the ASUS Super Hybrid Engine power management technology gives it a 14-hour battery life for all-day computing.

The 1005PE’s energy consumption figure is 45 percent less than Energy Star V5.0 requirements. The 1005PE is also certified by EPEAT in North America.

The 1005PE comes packaged in corrugated cardboard with at least 80 percent recycled content. Through a package reduction design process, the final packaging volume is some 11 percent smaller than other similar sized products.

Green EeeBox—EeeBox PC EB1501
The EeeBox PC EB1501 has received EU Flower and EPEAT Gold certifications in Europe and in North America respectively. With a total volume of just 1.5L, the space-saving EB1501 consumes 70 percent less power than a normal desktop PC. With a maximum power supply of 65-watts, its energy consumption figure is 56 percent lower than Energy Star V5.0 requirements, and is well below the 250-watt ratings of most computers today.

Green Motherboards—Protect 3.0
Motherboards are the heart of the system, and ASUS Green Design has come up with a new standard in motherboard protection with ASUS Protect 3.0. This new motherboard design protects the Earth, the system and user.

It features an eco-friendly Energy Processing Unit (EPU) that automatically monitors and adjusts the system’s power requirements to ensure maximum efficiency. Studies have shown that 10 million EPU-enabled motherboards can reduce annual CO? emissions by 210,000 tons—the equivalent of saving 17.5 million trees annually.*

A Green View—Designo LED Monitors
The Designo Series LED monitors (MS248H/ 238H/ 228H/ 208N) feature mercury-free LED-backlit panels that are 45 percent more energy efficient when compared to conventional LCD monitors. These LED monitors reduce CO2 emissions by 30 percent and achieve energy consumption levels lower than the stringent Energy Star V5.0 requirements. In addition, the monitors’ plastic parts are not sent for plating during the manufacturing process, thereby preventing environmental damage and contamination by the plating solutions.

Leading the way with five top technologies
Hsu stressed that after introducing Wind, the world’s first 10” netbook in 2008, MSI unveiled the world’s first ultra-thin X-Slim Series notebook with CULV in 2009. MSI’s new items for 2010 are simply amazing and include the Wind U160, the world’s first ultra-slim netbook with 15 hours of battery power, the slender X-Slim X620 with CULV’s superior multimedia capabilities, the GT660, an earthshaking gaming notebook equipped with Intel’s most advanced Core i7 Quad Processor, and the dual-screen multi-touch e-reader which attracted so much attention at CES.

MSI Marketing Director Sam Chern added that MSI’s theme will be “superior performance and multimedia capabilities” at CeBIT, symbolizing five major trend-triggering technologies in which MSI holds a leading position. These include MSI’s exclusive TDE overclocking and cooling technology, the smart GPU Boost power management technology, Cinema Pro high resolution image technology, advanced stereo technology, as well as award-winning designs for notebooks that are attractive, fashionable, slim, and light. Chern goes on to explain that with these five major technological leads, this year, MSI is unveiling a number of notebooks with sizes from 10” to 17”. MSI will be showing close to 30 new models at the show, including the gorgeous 10” Wind U netbook with extended battery life, notebooks with professional multimedia capabilities from the ultra-thin X-Slim Series, G Series gaming computers with Intel’s new high performance core processor, classic and chic computers from the C Series which offer the best performance to price ratio, and new high end models from the P and F Series designed with the business and fashion markets.
Great sound and visuals
Chern explains that during CeBIT this year, MSI will be showing the ultimate in sight and sound. To this end, MSI worked in collaboration with one of the world’s top names in sound systems to develop the GT660, a gaming laptop that will make its debut during the show. The GT660 is the only notebook in the world with LED light display technology, so whether you are listening to music, watching a film, or engrossed in a video game, the LED light display technology will be there to help maximize your audio and visual experience.

Chern points out that in addition to MSI’s strong array of notebooks, a number of conceptual products with leading technologies will be displayed at the exhibition, including the large screen 3D GE700 notebook, MSI’s multi-touch control dual screen slate and the multi-touch control single screen e-reader. Designed to minimize users’ carbon footprint, the Samsung R Series notebooks and N Series netbooks are completely free of mercury while using significantly less power for greater energy savings. Testament to its eco-credentials, the Samsung N and R Series have received the leading environmental and usability standard, TCO Certification, and are also ECO RoHS compliant. Complementing the eco-friendly usage of the Samsung N and R Series, the halogen-free G Series external HDD comes with low noise levels and reduced power consumption for the environmentally conscious user.

Despite the global slowdown last year, Samsung has experienced positive growth in the Notebook PC segment. According to Gartner, in the third quarter of 2009, Samsung experienced a year-on-year growth of 72.6 per globally. Locally, Samsung achieved a 10 per cent market share in the netbook segment within a quarter of its first entry into the Singapore market.

The new computing products consist of the following:

R Series Notebook PCs

• R480 spots a beautiful cover with the Samsung Touch of Colour Crystal Design featuring a scratch and smudge resistant exterior. This is complemented with a unique interior touchpad for a seamless feel with four soft LED lights illuminating the outline of the touchpad. Equipped with a 14 inch High Definition LED Display, an Intel Core i5-520M processor, together with the nVIDIA GeGorce GT330M graphic card and one gigabyte of RAM memory, the Samsung R480 allows users to enjoy the latest PC games and watch High Definition videos. 

 

• R430i is encased in the unique Samsung Durable Casing which protects it from everyday knocks. The Samsung R430i comes with the Intel GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics card. It also has a HDMI port for easy access to a HDTV or home theatre system.

 

• R430e has the nVIDIA GeForce GT 310M card with 512 megabyte of memory. To enable retrieving and sharing multimedia files wirelessly, the R430e is equipped with AnyPC remote PC access application that allows a secure One-Click connection to a home or office PC.

 

N Series Netbooks

• N220 and N210 are fused with the Samsung Touch of Colour Crystal Design. The Samsung N220 spots a unique two-tone colour while the Samsung N210’s cover is delicately crafted with a unique patterned finish. With a battery life of up to 11 hours, the Samsung N220 and N210 are equipped with the “Instant On” capability made possible with the Phoenix HyperSpace^TM tool, which enables users to access the Internet immediately without having to wait for Windows to boot. 

 

• N150 netbook is ultra-lightweight at 1.24kg and spots an integrated hinge for smooth and effortless movement. Powered with the Intel® Atom^TM N450 processor, users can enjoy up to 8 hours of clear quality content with the 10.1 inch LED anti reflective display.

 

G Series External HDD

• G2 Portable has a nature-inspired design coated with a trendy multi-levelled glitter finishing in four different colours. The 2.5 inch G2 Portable also has a host of useful features including Samsung Auto Backup for convenient data preservation, SecretZone™ and SafetyKey™ for enhanced data security.

 

• G3 Station has up to two terabytes of storage with a unique multi-levelled casing to protect the 3.5 inch HDD from scratches. The G3 Station has an Auto Backup feature for safe storage and weighs at 950 grams, making information preservation convenient. Aside from its eco-friendly build, the G3 Station is able to reduce power consumption by 95 per cent with its smart power management feature that enables the drive to be automatically switched on and off by the host computer. The G3 Station enters a Standby Mode after five minutes of idle time, stretching its energy-saving capabilities. 

For readers who are keen to know what is upcoming. We have information that we expect to see the AMD 890FX chispets ready by March or April this year. This new chipsets are meant for the “LEO” platform and it will support the upcoming 6 core processor for Desktop.  Forward into 2011, they have plans for the 32nm Bulldozer CPU with 4 to 8 cores and next generation graphics.

As for mainstream, i twill be Dorado platform which consists of 890GX with integrated graphics. In 2011 “LYNX” which puts the graphics within the CPU.  Although nothing is mentioned about the chipset or processor, we expect to see AMD 880G, 890GX as the chipsets of choice paired with SB850 south bridge that comes with SATA3 and RAID5 support.

For the AMD notebook series, we are expecting the “Danube” that supports up to quad core ,DX11 and a 7 hrs resting battery life. According to AMD, Resting battery Life is like the Standby hours on your mobile phone. In 2011, we see another Fusion product, bringing the desktop experience to the notebooks.

AMD held a press event to update the media about their plans for 2010 and 2011.

It has been some time since we last have an update of the AMD plans. This time round, we have Mr Tomo Kamiya, Regional Vice President South Asia and Mr. Tan See Ghee tells us more about the upcoming plans from AMD in the next few quarters.

According to AMD, the most important things that needs to be done is to push forward with it’s CPU and GPU. They intend to push for 45nm transition for improved performance and power efficient for all three lines of product. The notebooks will get a better battery life and AMD Fusion is the way to go.

Acer Recalls Notebook Computers Due to Burn Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Certain Acer Aspire-series Notebook Computers

Units: About 22,000

Manufacturer: Acer America Corporation, of San Jose, Calif.

Hazard: An internal microphone wire under the palm rest can short circuit and overheat. This poses a potential burn hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Acer has received three reports of computers short circuiting, resulting in slight melting of the external casing. No incidents occurred in the United States. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The recalled notebook computer models are the Acer AS3410, AS3410T, AS3810T, AS3810TG, AS3810TZ and AS3810TZG. The computer’s screen size is about 13.3 inches measured diagonally. Not all units are affected. Consumers should contact Acer to determine if their unit is included in the recall.
