Palladine Palroid Android tablet PR70HD with HDMI for 1080p playback sighted at Sitex 2010
Bluetooth 27 Nov 2010

If you are wondering around the SITEX 2010 computer fair in Singapore. You would have already come across this tablet device by Singaporean firm Palladine. Palladine is a company that started selling large screen LCD TVs at half the price of the big brands 4 years back. They were quite successful in penetrating the market first with low price products with acceptable quality.

Palladine took the right bet and went into making tablets. It makes it’s first debut at the year end consumer IT show – SITEX 2010.  This tablet device , known as Palroid sounds like palaroid (the old shoot n print camera). How they come about with the name is probably taking the first few letters of their brand Palladine and add the last few characters of Android.

The device comes in 2 colours (glossy black or white) and has a 7″ TFT resistive multi touch panel with a screen resolution of 800×480 pixels. The brain powering the device is a 800Mhz ARM 11+DSP  processor. PR70HD comes an internal memory of 2GB to 32GB, memory for internal storage and 256MB to 512MB DDR of memory. External storage is by SD card supporting 256M ~ 32GB.

According to Palladine, this device is meant to be a book reader and a portable media player. That is probably the reason it has a HDMI port supporting 1080p output. There are also USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports (one each). Audio port is a 3.5″ standard din plug. As for power, it uses a 9v 1.5amp input. Battery is a 7.4v 1600mAH 2 cell Li poly battery. It is said to have a standby time of up to 10 hrs, video playback of 3.5hrs, audio playback up to 8 hsr, reading up to 10hrs and WIFI of up to 4 hrs.

The OS preloaded inside is Android 2.1, so you get your live wallpaper but you don’t get to run it as an AP (as in android 2.2). With the OS, you can do your usual download of the apps, search the web, browse, email etc. The interesting thing about this device is that they allow you to use Android marketplace. Other tablets from Toshiba or Creative do not have this function at all. Another plus point of this device is that you can plug your USB dongle from Huawei or Vodaphone and you can surf the net via 3G. This feature is missing from other devices.

We tried out the device and felt that it is not that responsive to my fingers. I have almost forgotten that it is a resistive screen. The demonstrator passed me a stylus and it is way better. Video playback to HDMI out is smooth without any gitters. Although they didn’t state what file formats are supported, I could see from the demonstration set consists of folders of DIVX, RMVB, AVI etc. (check out the next page for the video demo).

At the show, Palroid is selling for S$338 and it comes with a free keyboard holder worth S$39. With that you can type on the mini keyboard.

We asked if they intend to come out with a 10 incher with capactive screen and also to provide regular updates to OS e.g. 2.2 or android 3.0. The answer is a NO.

As a PMP, I would say this device is a bit on the expensive side. If you intend to use it as an all rounder for cloud computing, this device might suit you at this price.

I also bought on the last day of SITEX 2010. I am overall ok with device.

These all are -ves I am still cannot compromise

-few times i have charged. But didn’t feel good about the battery. Last for only couple of hours. I need to carry the power card wherver I go.
-Unexpectedly screen switched off. Couldn’t understand the logic.
-Unable to connect to 3G. While connected with Starhub mobile USB, the strange sound is coming from the Palroid. I immediately removed off from the Palroid device.

I was skeptical at first coz i have never heard of this brand and after the promoter demo it to me, i decide to give it a try.
At first i was not use to the resistive screen as i am a iphone user, after a few i get use to it i found it quite ok.
I really like the HDMI output on the set as i am able to play HD youtube files on my LCD TV which i purchase together with the device. It even allow us to surf the net through Wifi or using a dongle(though not all dongle is compatible as mention by the staff)well consider myself lucky mine can be use.
For a gadget like this and a price so affordable, i can say i’ve got nothing to complain.I got it on the last day as well @$299 minus the keyboard as they have ran out of stocks, lastly Kudos to this local company for being able to come out with a gadget so affordable and in line with the market.

I bought this product of yours (palroid HD1080p) from the sitex on 28/11/10 and I’m shock to know that I did not get the free key board pad after reading your information! So is it possible to get one from you?
