Huawei will soon launch phones based on the latest Kirin 980 which host many 1st in the world. Be it in terms of network speed, photography etc, it will bring many surprises with the launch of the Mate 20 on 16 Oct 2018.

Performance and power efficiency

With 7nm manufacturing process it is more energy efficient than previous generation chipsets. It has 20 percent speed improvement and 40 percent power efficiency improvement to previous generation. It also has a 3.5x increment in transistors.

Kirin 970 is the world’s first cortex A76 based CPU promises 75 percent increase in performance and 58 performance in power efficiency.

AI loading prediction has lesser power consumption and smoother gaming experience.

Kirin 980 also features a new CPU architrcture with a flex scheduling mechanism with 2x turbo performance and a 2x sustained performance at 2.6GHz and 1.92GHz plus 4x power efficiency with Cortex A55 @1.8GHz.

Flex Scheduling Mechanism

Kirin 980 also has a boost in it’s memory bandwidth with 20 percent more bandwidth and 22 percent less efficiency.

For example music will use lower energy with lower frequency cores while heavy load gaming will kick in the higher speed cores.

Compared to Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 , it has 22 percent better performance and lesser power consumption.

In terms of graphics, it is the first to have the Mali G76 GPU that promises 46% increase in performance and 178% increase in power efficiency compared to the Kirin 970.With Huawei’s AI Loading Prediction Technology, it is able to attain 60 fps consistently as compared to Snapdragon 845 in the NBA2K18 Game v35.0.1.

The demonstration shows that the Kirin 980’s  Realtime Multi Person Gesture Recognition is capable of tracking movements in real time for analytics. Applications will be able to tap onto such data for enhancing sportsman accuracy or perhaps used in medical science for physio therapy.

Photography

As for the camera, Kirin 980 incorporates a Dual ISP which improved speed and processing of up to 46% faster than the previous generation. Facial Recognition and detection rate is up to 97.4% and 33% in Latency improvement & recording.

With dual NPU, it can recognize 4500 images with an improved 120 percent recognition speed.

Dual NPU can recognise images and video. There might be a feature of the mate 20 to be able to recognize objects in videos on the mate 20.

Single NPU can only recognise an object with dual NPU it can recognise more details. Not only it can recognise one scene it can now recognise the objects.

The new NPUs might be able to recognise artwork , food type. Imagine it can differentiate between chicken rice and nasi lemak. Whoa would that be a reality soon ?

Connectivity

It has the world’s first Cat 21 LTE at 1.4Gbps. that provides the highest speed smoother gaming experience and surfing in all scenerios.

It also incoporate world’s fastest smartphone wifi speed of up to 1732 Mbps. Using its Huawei Hi103 chip. There is also a dual freq GPS for super precise postioning.

Conclusion

The Kirin 980 has the world’s first 7nm SoC, cortex A76 based CPU, Mali G76 GPU, Dual NPU, CAT 21 modem of up to 1.4Gbps, wifi speed of up to 1.7Gbps, SoC supporting LP DDR 4x up to 2133MHz.
