INTEL Shows X79 mainboards ASUS CIX79 Deluxe, ASROCK X79 Extreme4, Gigabyte GD X79A-UD3 and the MSI X79A-GD65

Intel has a LOT of motherboards on display, the more prominent onces however are based on the X79 chipset, Intels next gen enthusiast platform with 2011-pin LGA socket, the Sandy Bridge-E (enthusiast) processor that features a massive quad-channel DDR3 memory controller and 32+ lane PCI-Express 2.0 hub, and the X79 chipset. Intel might actually skip the 6-series chipset family with its next high-end platform chipset as the platform is slated for Q4 2011 already, though Z68 will still be launched, but as a Premium chipset.

The Gigabyte A75-UD4H is powered by AMD hudson D3 chipset and support the latest AMD A series APU on socket FM-1.

This board features on board video from the APU with output ports HDMI,DVI and Display Port. On board is two full length PCIe slots which supports AMD crossFire.

A change from the previous generation of boards, the Gigabyte A75-UD4H now adopts the Etrontech USB 3.0 controllers which has just passed the USB-IF test recently. 1394 is also supported by VIA controller chip on board.

For audio, it uses the Realtek codec and supports Dolby Home Theatre. Other features include On/Off, EasyTune, Smart 6 etc, Dual BIOS etc.
The board will go on sale some time in July 2011 in time for the launch of the A series processors.

Although Z68 boards are readily available in the market, the price of Z68 boards might turn away DIY users. If you are just a gamer that plugs in discrete desktop VGA card, the Intel P67 board at a good price point might just be the choice over the more expensive Z68 which offers just a little bit more with Lucid to tap the transcoding power of the processor.

Today, we  take a look at the Gigabyte P67A-UD3R-B3. As you are probably aware, the Intel P67 released early this year was recalled due to bugs. This B3 revision solves the issues and Gigabyte came out with a B3 model with a new packaging.

The P67A-UD3R-B3 is based on the Intel P67 B3 revision chipset. It support for Intel® Core™ i7 processors/Intel® Core™ i5 processors/ Intel® Core™ i3 processors/Intel® Pentium® processors/Intel® Celeron® processors in the LGA1155 package. It has 4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 32 GB of system memory in Dual channel memory architecture. It supports DDR3 2133/1866/1600/1333/1066 MHz memory modules, non ECC and XMP profiles.

For multimedia, it comes with on board Realtek ALC889 codec 7.1 ch audio with Dolby Home Theater and S/PDIF out. For gamers, it has a Realtek RTL8111E chip (10/100/1000 Mbit) for high speed LAN.

The board has two full length PCIe slots running at PCIe 2.0x 16 and PCIe 2.0 x 4.It supports CrossFireX. The PCIEX16 slot operates at up to x4 mode when ATI CrossFireX™ is enabled. There are 3 PCIe 2.0 x1 and 2 PCI slots.

On board there are 2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (SATA3_0, SATA3_1) supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
and 4 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATA2_2, SATA2_3, SATA2_4, SATA2_5) supporting up to 4 SATA 3Gb/s devices
 They support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10.

 
As for USB, the board supports up to 14 USB 2.0/1.1 ports (8 on the back panel, 6 via the USB brackets connected to the internal USB headers). The USB 3.0 is supported by Renesas D720200 chip with up to 2 USB 3.0/2.0 ports.

The board is designed with a longer lifetime in mind. It comes with a Dual CPU Power Engine allownig the CPU VRM power phases to split evenly into 2 sets of power engines that operate in tandem. As such GIGABYTE Dual CPU Power effectively halves the amount of work done by each set of power phases to significantly increase motherboard durability and reliability. It also has a VRD 12 Compliant CPU Power Design

On top of all these, it supports Dual BIOS 3TB+ HDD, Ultra Durable3, On/Off Charge technolgy, Super Speed USB 3.0, Turbo USB 3.0, SATA 6Gbps, 3X USB power boost, Turbo XHD(full automatic RAID 0), DES 2, Smart 6, CloudOC, Hotkey OC, AutoGreen, Hardware OverVoltage ControlIC, Dolby Home Theatre and is ErP compliant.

AMD has been busy with developing the APU for some years. With Intel releasing it’s latest H67 processors with embedded graphics, AMD’s game plan is to tackle it’s competitor from bottom up, e.g. low processor speed high performance graphics at a good price point.

Known as the AMD brazos, the GA-E350N-USB3 comes with an APU and the Fusion Controller HUB (FCH). The APU integrates a CPU and a graphics processor inside one unit. The embedded graphics is a DX11 AMD Radeon HD 6310 class graphics. The mainboard supports only 2 DIMMs running single channel memory architecture of up to 8GB of DDR3-1333(OC)/1066.

As this board is meant to be a low power deskbook, it only has a TDP of only 18W, making it a direct competitor to the Atom processors from Intel.

Other specifications of this board include 1 full length PCI e 2.0 slot running at PCIe x4. On board 8 USB 2.0 and 2 USB 3.0 (NEC) ports, SATA 6Gbps x 4.3 display ports D-SUB, HDMI and DVI-D. The audio uses Realtek ALC892 w Dolby home theatre.

GV-N580D5-15I-B is based on NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX580 GPU. It supports DX 11, 3D VISION, 3D Vision Surround, PhysX and 3 way SLI. Gigabyte GV-N580D5-15I-B uses Vapor Chamber heatsink design for faster heat dissipation.

As for the specifications, the GV-N580D5-15I-B GPU has 512 CUDA and has GDDR5 memory on board. The core/mem is the same as other GeForce GTX 580 cards at 772MHz (Core), 4008MHz (Mem).

In the coming month, Intel will announce it’s new generation chipset. Today we take a look at a few new upcoming boards from Gigabyte that will support this new chipset and new series of processors.

IDF 2010 : Gigabyte’s Sandy Bridge Motherboard sighted at IDF 2010

The first Gigabyte board with Intel P67 chipset using the Socket 1155 is sighted at IDF 2010 in San Francisco.

Gigabyte showcase two boards model P67A-UD5 and P67-UD7. Both are high end board with a blue and a black PCB respectively.

Intel P67 is a discrete chipset unlike the H67. It is suppose to support both CrossFire X and SLI. It is suspected that the Gigabyte P67 might licensed SLI support through the use of the NF200 SLI chipset from NVIDIA.

The P67-UD5 has 2 x USB 3.0 ports while the P67-UD7 has 4 instead. Native support of SATA 6.0Gbps (SATA 3) is now embedded within the Intel chipset. Thus, it doesn’t require additional supporting chips for that.

Both boards are suspected to be ready by Jan 2011 when the CPU is launched.

Sunbeamtech USB 3.0 HDDPAL docking station Review

Ever since NEC USB 3.0 becomes the defacto chipset for USB 3.0 support, USB 3.0 enclosures are beginning to flood the market as a replacement for the aging USB 2.0 and an alternative to eSATA.

While enclosure is still a hard plastic with electronics that connect your USB port to SATA HDD, it would be quite troublesome to change HDD or SSD as and when you like it.

The plug-n-play ready, high speed USB3.0 HDDPAL provides the user with flexibility, portability and performance. The unit supports both 2.5” and 3.5” SATA drives up to 2TB in size. Local distributor CDL Trading and Gigabyte Technology of Taiwan held a gathering of power users at a Thai restaurant in town. Rockson Chiang was here in town to give us a view of the technologies available on the Gigabyte mainboards.

The event started at 7.20pm with crowds streaming in from all parts of Singapore. To my surprise, some of the attendees are probably Secondary school kids. Of course, the older ones would be close to 50 yrs old. It simply shows that Gigabyte boards are well accepted by all age groups.

Much of the presentation was on the current technologies like USB 3.0 super charge of iPhone, iPad and stability design using ferrite chokes etc. The most interesting demonstration was the demonstration of Cloud OC where he uses a iPad (or any phone with wifi). The wifi device is connected to the AP. With the device (ipad or phone), you can access the IP address of your machine and overclock the system remotely over the WiFi network.

The year 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of Computex Taipei which has become the largest computer exhibition in Asia and the second largest in the world. As usual, OCWorkbench will bring you highlights of the show “live” for our readers. This year, our report will be on our main news page, forums, twitter and facebook. As usual, the main focus this year would still falls onto the mainboard manufacturers and peripherals.The probably newest thing would be the upcoming Intel chipsets, handheld device and slim notebooks. In this Day 0 Coverage, we will take a glimpse of what to expect from some of these big players in the market in the next few pages.

This board is one of the most insane boards I have ever seen made for the desktop users. It comes with in a XL-ATX form factor which is of dimensions 345mm x 263.5mm. The board suports 32nm 6 core processors.

It has 7 PCIe 2.0 x 16 slots and supports quad crossfire or quad SLI. There are 12 SATA ports with RAID (10 on board 2 on the rear). eSATA/USB combo ports are available too. There is also SATA 6Gbps support using Marvell SE9128 interface chip. It also has NEC USB 3.0 support on board. there is also DUal GbE LAN.
