Kingston Helps Drive Big Data and Virtualization Initiatives with New SSDNow E100 Enterprise SSD
• New Enterprise-Class SSD Drives Offer 10X Gains in Endurance and Reliability;
• Expansion of Industry Leading SSD Family From Client Through Enterprise
• Helps Organizations Maximize Database Performance, Safeguard Data and Save on Power Costs

Hsinchu, Taiwan – August 28, 2012 — Kingston, the independent world leader in memory products, today announced the SSDNow E100 SSD, the company’s new enterprise-class solid state drive (SSD). The new drive enables enterprises to accommodate the performance demands required in support of big data and virtualization initiatives. The new Kingston E100 SSD achieves up to 10X improvements in endurance and reliability over client SSDs on existing hardware, while drastically reducing the physical footprint as significantly fewer SSDs are needed to handle the tasks of many traditional hard-disk drives (HDD).

The performance and processing requirements required in the rapid analysis of massive data sets and large collections of virtual systems have pushed many servers far beyond their breaking point. The next generation E100 SSD provides vastly higher IOPS compared to HDDs, dramatically reducing processing bottlenecks, computer latency and physical system limitations.

In a recent virtualized database performance test that compared Kingston’s Enterprise SSD with traditional HDDs, the review “found that replacing a solution consisting of a server with an external chassis containing 24 HDDs with only six internal SSDs increased total database performance by up to 91.8 percent.” The amount of power consumed “while idle and while running database workloads for both revealed that Kingston’s SSDs used up to 51.0 percent less power than the HDDs, and increased performance per watt by a staggering 184.2 percent.”

“Companies worldwide have come to depend on Kingston server memory for reliability and performance,” said Nathan Su, Flash Memory Sales Director, APAC Region, Kingston. “We are proud to introduce the SSDNow E100 enterprise-class SSD to help organizations handle such initiatives as big data and virtualized environments. The drive’s higher endurance and reliability, along with higher IOPS make it an integral part of a datacenter where uninterrupted 24/7 operation is mission critical.”

The new enterprise-class SSDNow E100 SSD is shipping immediately and is available in 100GB, 200GB and 400GB capacities. It is backed by a three-year warranty and free technical support.

Review of Kingston HyperX 3K 120G SSD model SH103S3/120G

Review of Kingston HyperX 3K 120G SSD model SH103S3/120G
bluetooth 3 Aug 2012

Kingston, a renown brand in the industry is always giving the best to it’s customers. Although they might not be the first to market SSDs featuring the SandForce controller, it’s entry has definitely brought down the price of SSD to mainstream users.

Featuring the 2nd generation SandForce SF-2281 controller, the high-speed SATA Rev. 3.0 (6Gb/s) performance and blazing fast random and sequential read/write speeds. SandForce DuraClass™ technology provides the latest data integrity protection for ultimate endurance over the entire life of the drive.

If you are wondering why Kingston choose a model name 3K, the reason is because it is rated at 3 thousand  program/erase cycle. Effectively that would give it a 8.2 yrs life span. The standard HyperX drive ships with 5K 25nm Intel MLC NAND, while the HyperX 3K ships with 3K 25nm Intel MLC NAND.

Kingston HyperX 3K scores 355.7 MBps via Thunderbolt connection on Gigabyte Z77X-UP5 TH

Posted on 03 August 2012 by

Two days ago, we posted a story about the performance of Thunderbolt vs USB 3 on the Gigabyte Z77X-UP5 TH motherboard. The results are shown here. Today, we retested it using a Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD. Below are the results :

It is able to achieve a sequential read and write of 355.7MB/s and 173.3MB/s respectively. As we can see, the Kingston HyperX 3K SSD based on the SandForce controller is one of the better choices for SSD.

From the results, we can see that the performance is still a 150MB/s slower than using the drive on a SATA 6Gbps SATA port. Nevertheless, the performance is quite impressive considering that the test platform’s BIOS are still at it’s early stages.

If the drive is plugged direct to the SATA 6Gbps port, the drive is able to achieve sequential read of 454 MB/s and write at 173 MB/s.

OCZ SSD incompatibility with Intel Z77 series motherboards ?

Posted on 03 June 2012 by

It has been reported that a few brands of SSDs doesn’t seem to work very well with Intel Z77 boards. According to reports online, OCZ SSDs seems to be affected. In some instances, it cannot be recognised in the BIOS or it could only be recognised at the first instance and disappear on reboot.

In our case, we experienced weird installation issues on our Kingston SSDNow V series on an ASRock Z77 board. The Windows 7 USB stick is able to install on two HDDs with an older BIOS but fails with the latest. As for the SSD, it sometimes can be detected and sometimes disappear on reboot.

So is this an isolated case ? Will a BIOS fix solve the problem?

Kingston HyperX KHX2400C11D3K4/8GX Review
Bluetooth 23 Mar 2012

With more boards supporting overclock speeds of DDR3-2400, ram manufactures are releasing new modules that are capable of running these overclocked speeds with latest processors and chipsets in market. As these new modules comes in a pack of 4, it is just best suited to pair it with the Intel X79 system as it supports Quad Channel DDR3.

Today, we take a look at Kingston KHX2400C11D3K4/8GX.

Kingston’s KHX2400C11D3K4/8GX is a kit of four 256M x 64-bit (2GB) DDR3-2400 CL11 SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM)
1Rx8 memory modules, based on eight 256M x 8-bit DDR3 FBGA components per module. Each module kit supports
Intel® XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles). Total kit capacity is 8GB. Each module kit has been tested to run at DDR3-2400 at
a low latency timing of 11-13-11 at 1.65V. The SPDs are programmed to JEDEC standard latency DDR3-1333 timing of
9-9-9 at 1.5V. Each 240-pin DIMM uses gold contact fingers.

The JEDEC standard electrical and mechanical specifications are as follows

XMP TIMING PARAMETERS
• JEDEC: DDR3-1333 CL9-9-9 @1.5V
• XMP Profile #1: D3-2400 CL11-13-11 @1.65V
• XMP Profile #2: D3-2133 CL11-12-11 @1.65V

In our test, we put the ram modules to test on our Biostar TPower X79 motherboard (review of board with ram here).

On the next page, we run the ram module under the Biostar Tpower X79 in both XMP Profile #1 and XMP Profile #2.

Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey series modules KHX2133C9AD3X2K2-4GX
Bluetooth 16 Jul 2011

When it comes to choosing ram modules for your system,  you would definitely go for something that gives you the best price performance ratio, that is lowest price yet give you the best performance. Of course, the cost per GB is also another consideration.

Kingston is known for it’s value series of DRAM and the higher end HyperX T1 series. While most manufacturers are competing for market share, Kingston is also eying the mid high range market. The Hyper X GENESIS series is just one of the 5 HyperX series that targets the gamers, enthusiasts and most importantly system integrators.

The Kingston’s KHX2133C9AD3X2K2/4GX is a kit of two 256M x 64-bit 2GB (2048MB) DDR3-2133MHz CL9 SDRAM
(Synchronous DRAM) memory modules, based on sixteen 128M x 8-bit DDR3 FBGA components per module. Each
module kit supports Intel ® XMP (Extreme Memory Profiles). Total kit capacity is 4GB. Each module kit has been tested
to run at DDR3-2133MHz at a low latency timing of 9-11-9 at 1.65V. The SPDs are programmed to JEDEC standard
latency DDR3-1333MHz timing of 9-9-9 at 1.5V. Each 240-pin DIMM uses gold contact fingers and requires +1.5V.

As it supports Intel’s XMP profiling, it is easy to configure Intel P67, Z68 systems as both supports DDR3-2133. Simply enter into the BIOS and choose Profile#1 or Profile#2 and the system will be able to work correctly at the rated speed.

The two XMP profiles are as follow at 1.65v

Profile #1 C9-11-9-27-2T DDR3-2133
Profile #2 C9-9-9-27-2T DDR3-1866

On the 2nd page, we will take a look at the performance of this pair of modules with some benchmarks.

Kingston DDR3-2133 XMP capable modules does CAS 5 DDR3-1600

Posted on 13 July 2011 by

While we were doing some tests on the Z68 platform, we were interested in finding out how far can we lower the CAS latency of ram we have on hand. Using the Gigabyte Z68X-UD7-B3 board, we increase the DIMM voltage to 1.65v and that is all we did.

We managed to boot up at CAS 5 DDR3-1600.  Although it is at a low latency, the bandwidth isn’t as good as the same modules running at C9-9-9-27 2T DDR3-2133. Below is a screen shot of the ram model Kingston KHX2133C9AD3X2K2_4GX running at CAS 5 DDR3-1600.
