StarHub Launches StarHub TV on Fibre: a New IPTV Service

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service open initially to commercial customers

StarHub TV on Fibre to offer HD content and three times as many channels

Seamless picture quality with prioritised IPTV delivery independent of broadband activity

Singapore, 14 March 2013 – StarHub TV commercial customers will get to enjoy an all-new TV viewing experience with the launch of StarHub TV on Fibre on 18 March 2013. An Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) pay TV service, StarHub TV on Fibre offers businesses access to crystal clear high-definition content and over three times as many TV channels as the existing Digital Terrestrial Television (DTTV) platform. The service will be initially available only to commercial customers such as offices, restaurants and pubs.

Delivered over the island-wide Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (NGNBN), StarHub TV on Fibre will be able to reach current DTTV customers and beyond, effectively covering commercial customers all over Singapore. StarHub TV on Fibre customers will also enjoy prioritised, managed IPTV access as the service utilises discrete ports on the optical network terminal. With IPTV access independent of broadband activity, StarHub TV on Fibre promises a superior viewing experience in terms of picture quality, speed and navigation.

“While DTTV has served our commercial customers well, we have capitalised on the NGNBN roll-out to provide an even better service to this segment of customers. StarHub TV on Fibre marks an important milestone in our pay TV business. Compared to DTTV, we can offer our commercial customers a significantly improved breadth and depth of content, delivered with the assurance of our trademark reliability,” said Ms Lin Shu Fen, StarHub’s Vice President of Home Solutions. “We expect the new user interface to provide our customers with a smoother and seamless journey when interacting with the content. In addition, it will bring a new level of interactivity and personalisation to TV viewing with features such as Facebook profile integration and the ability to set unique user accounts. We will have over 100 TV channels at launch and we are constantly working with content providers to bring more channels to the service.”

StarHub TV on Fibre commercial customers will have access to viewing options currently unavailable to DTTV customers. In addition to DTTV mainstays such as BBC World News, Bloomberg Television and CNN, new channels introduced include favourites across kids, entertainment, education and sports genres like Cartoon Network, DIVA Universal, HISTORY, NBA TV; and high-definition options such as FOX HD, FOX SPORTS PLUS (HD), Sports HD, Discovery HD World, National Geographic Channel HD, NAT GEO WILD HD and Travel Channel HD. Making full use of IPTV’s two-way network, StarHub TV on Fibre’s interactive features include Facebook profile integration, unique user account log-ins, an aggregated user rating system and informative apps such as the Singapore Exchange, Yahoo! News and Weather which are especially useful to corporate clients.

StarHub to launch Anytime TV, a new cable TV plan exclusively for broadband customers

Singapore, 7 December 2012 – StarHub today announced that it will offer a new pay-as-you-watch cable TV plan exclusively to its home broadband customers who presently do not have a StarHub TV subscription. Called ‘Anytime TV’, this new plan will allow customers to access StarHub TV’s on-demand library of more than 6,500 TV shows and movies as well as 12 complimentary cable TV channels.

“Most of our broadband customers today have our cable TV service. However, we recognise that there is a segment of customers who would prefer a more flexible, pay-as-you-watch cable TV service as they may not want to commit to a monthly subscription,” said Ms Iris Wee, Vice President of Home Solutions & Content, StarHub. “Our cable TV customers today enjoy access to more than 6,500 on-demand titles. We therefore thought that it would be great to extend our catalogue of on-demand content to this customer segment as well. Anytime TV will offer subscribers the flexibility to pay for what they want to watch at a time convenient to them, from as low as $1.07 per title.”

Anytime TV subscribers can catch the latest movie blockbusters and TVB dramas as early as a month after their DVD release or premiere in Hong Kong respectively. Popular Malay movies can be purchased as early as two weeks after their Malaysia box-office debut. During this holiday season, Hollywood movie fans can look forward to box-office hits in High Definition (HD), such as The Amazing Spider-Man andThe Bourne Legacy. StarHub is also working with long-time content partner TVB to bring in popular TVB dramas, such as Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles (名媛望族and The Confidant (大太监). For added value, StarHub offers Anytime TV subscribers 10% off StarHub TV’s Video-On-Demand titles and KaraOK! Day Pass.

Besides its on-demand video store, Anytime TV subscribers will get complimentary access to StarHub TV’s FreeView service comprising 12 StarHub TV channels, including Bloomberg Television, E City and SuperSports Arena. By end-2012, StarHub will bring the total number of complimentary channels to 14 with the launch of ESPNews (Channel 207) and China Business Network (Channel 809). This new plan more than doubles the number of TV channels for customers who presently only watch free-to-air TV. StarHub‘s more than half a million cable TV customers are already enjoying this FreeView service.

Starting tomorrow, StarHub’s home broadband customers who wish to enjoy Anytime TV can call 1630 or visit any StarHub Shop or authorised dealer to rent a set-top box. The set-top box rental fee starts from $6.42 per month for the HD Interactive set-top box, to $14.98 per month for customers who wish to record and watch their favourite TV shows on HubStation HD.

“This hubbing initiative is yet another milestone in our efforts to ensure our home broadband customers continue to get better value,” added Ms Wee.

StarHub Partners Western Digital® For Recording Capabilities On HD Interactive Set-Top Box

External Hard Drive Enables Recording With StarHub’s Smart TVTM Value-Added Service

Singapore, 16 April 2012 – Starting 18 April 2012, StarHub TV customers using the HD Interactive set-top boxes will soon have recording options thanks to StarHub’s new Value-Added Service (VAS) – Smart TVTM, and the introduction of an external hard drive that is compatible with the HD Interactive set-top box to enable recording capabilities.

StarHub’s HD Interactive set-top box was first introduced in May 2010 to enable viewers to enjoy high definition content and interactive TV services such as On Demand TV and KaraOK!. Users of this set-top box were however unable to initiate any content recordings.

This lack of recording capabilities will be a thing of the past when customers subscribe to Smart TVTM. When connected to the Western Digital® My Passport® AV portable media drives, Smart TVTM functionalities will be activated on the HD Interactive set-top box. Users can then enjoy digital video recorder (DVR) capabilities such as ‘Live’ TV control, and options to record a programme instantaneously or at pre-set times, by series or by show.

With a generous capacity of 320 GB, each My Passport® AV portable media drive offers storage space to store up to 160 hours and 30 hours for standard and High Definition content respectively. Users can also choose to have access to more storage space by purchasing multiple external hard drives. Only one subscription to Smart TVTM is required for households with multiple HD Interactive set-top boxes.

Ms Iris Wee, StarHub’s Vice President of Home Solutions & Content shared, “Viewers want to have the option to store their preferred content and consume it at any time, effectively, without any loss of quality. Some also want to safeguard their favourite content, and store them for future viewing. Smart TVTM will be a welcome introduction and underscores the importance that StarHub places on user experience for our TV customers, offering solutions that are tailored to their viewing needs”.

Mr Craig Davis, Director Sales & Marketing, Retail Division, Western Digital APAC & Japan added, “We are excited to partner with StarHub and bring enhanced user experience to viewers. My Passport® AV portable media drives will create added value to the HD Interactive set-top box and elevate home entertainment to another level.”

The Smart TVTM service is priced at an affordable fee of $4.28[1] (w/GST) monthly, and subscription can be made via Instant Buy when the external hard drive is connected to a HD Interactive set-top box for the first time. My Passport® AV portable media drive is retailing at $139 (GST included), and will be sold exclusively at all StarHub retail stores at a promotion price of $88 (GST included) while stocks last.

Singapore telcos iPhone 4S Price plan comparison chart

Posted on 26 October 2011 by

The three Singapore telcos, M1, Starhub and Singtel has already announced their price plans for the new Apple iPhone 4S that goes on sale on 28 OCT 2011.

We have consolidated the various price plans into this chart for your easy reference. So, which telco give you the best deal? Let’s analyse it for you.

If you are on a budget constraint and wants the latest gadget at minimum cost, the M1 plan seems to be the cheapest among the three telcos. At S$36 a month, you get the same amount of local outgoing minutes. Other than the iPhone 4S 16G is $7 more expensive than the two other telcos, the 32GB and 64GB model are relatively cheaper than Singtel and Starhub.

What about the S$56-$59.90 range plans ? For this plan, M1 again is the cheapest in terms of per month subscription.  Data bundle are all 12 GB. SMS doesn’t really matter as you can use Whatsapp or imessaging  on iOS.  Other than it’s pricing of iPhone 4S 32GB which is more expensive than Singtel, both Starhub and Singtel can’t match M1′s pricing.

As for the $98-$99.99 range, M1 again seems to edge out the two competitors. It has unlimited data bundle. So, you can use this plan to replace your broadband if the HSPA speeds are good at your location. With unlimited data, you can make SKYPE calls, download videos without worry. M1 is also generous to provide 700 minutes of outgoing calls. The price for it’s 4S 32GB is also cheapest of all. As for iPhone 4S 64GB, Singtel is $2 cheaper but you pay $2 more monthly for the subscription.

Now, the highest plans. M1 again is cheapest at S$198. Singtel and Starhub both has 2000 minutes and 2000 SMS bundled in. M1 on the other hand gives you unlimited incoming calls. Data is both unlimited on M1 and Starhub but capped at 30GB for Singtel. You don’t have to pay upfront for iPhone 4S 16GB and 32GB models. As for iPhone 4S 64GB model, Singtel is $7 dollars cheaper than M1 at S$115 and Starhub at S$128.

Before you decide on which operator and plan to take. It is important to know some of the perks that are available on the various networks. Among the 3, Singtel and Starhub both has 3G video streaming from their pay tv service. M1 on the other hand lacks out this feature.

Secondly, Singtel so far has the widest coverage and signal shouldn’t be an issue in most parts of the country. The other two operators do have good signals in prominent towns and in city area. 3G signal coverage is not as far reach as Singtel.

Thirdly, you have to consider the network. If you use the data bundle for serving internet, which one gives you a better experience in terms of speed and loading?

Fourthly, if you travel often, you might want to check who are their roaming partners. Certain roaming partners offer better roaming rates if you log into their network when overseas.

So, good luck and enjoy your new iPhone 4S. Any comments, please post them at this link http://forums.ocworkbench.com/showthread.php?p=488156#post488156

Hong Kong high speed Fibre broadband 500Mbps is only HKD 132 pm (USD 16.90 or SGD 20.70)

Posted on 10 July 2011 by

Hong Kong high speed Fibre broadband 500Mbps is only HKD 132 pm (USD 16.90 or SGD 20.70)

Competition is good for consumers. This is definitely the case for Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, there are currently about 3 or 4 Broadband players. Most of them are triple play or quad play bundling TV, Voice with broadband and sell with 2 to 3 years contract.

To most people, having a high speed internet and broadband/cable tv would definitely cut down costs. As long time favourite TV programmes like EPL or ESPN are tied to certain operators, a subscriber has difficulty choosing which operator to go to.

Well, this time round PCCW, an operator is throwing a good bundle at a ridiculous low price.

The new service comes with Free WIFI access at hot spots, WIFI at home and NowTV channels when you sign up for the 500Mbps Fibre Broadband plan with them.

Guess what, the 500Mbps Fibre broadband plan only costs HKD 132 pm for 30 mthse (USD 16.90 or SGD 20.70) with a 36 mths contract. The first 6 mths is FREE.

In Singapore, the cheapest deal comes from operator M1 Ltd. It has a Fibre Broadband plan at 50Mbps and comes with Digital Home Fixed line thrown in at SGD 29 (USD 23.75 USD, HKD 184.80).

It is really shocking that customers in Singapore are paying so much more, for a 50Mbps (HKD 184.80) vs a 500Mbps (HKD 132).

How to hook up to the OpenNet Fibre Broadband ?

How to hook up to the Fibre Broadband powered by OpenNet
Bluetooth 3 Sep 2010

Most readers would be familiar with hooking onto the ADSL or Cable broadband. When it comes to the new Fibre Broadband, many are still pondering on what equipment is required to get up to speed.

One thing for sure, your existing ADSL or Cable Modem would no longer be required. If you own a Wireless Router or any networking devices, these devices will still function just as it is for switched ports at home or at work. In our example, we will reference the M1 broadband which should be similar to what other operators provide.

Before you sign up with any Retail Service provider (RSP), you should already have the Opennet box installed at your premises. This box is also known as the Termination Point (TP). You can check at http://rollout.opennet.com.sg on when your estate will be wired up.

If you have that installed by OpenNet, you can now choose the RSP and plan you would like to sign up for. Once that is done, Nucleus Connect, the OpCo will install a box as shown in the picture below (left hand side). This box is known as the Optical network Terminal (ONT). This box has 4 ports which will 1 port will be provisioned for service. The ONT will be connected to the Termination Point via a optical fire patch cable.

Singapore Consumer Fibre Broadband Plans Comparison chart Update – M1 vs Singtel vs Starhub fibre broadband plans

Posted on 03 September 2010 by

Yesterday, Starhub announced their price plans for their Fibre Broadband Plans. They announced 7 different plans for end consumers, 4 normal plans and 3 Hubber plans with Starhub TV.

To our surprise, Starhub did not have any low speed plans e.g. 25Mbps or 50Mbps plan. The lowest speed is already 100Mbps/50Mbps at $68.27. Lowering the tier plans would probably affect their cable price plans too. That is probably the reason why they start off from 100Mbps instead.

Other plans include a 150Mbps, 200Mbps and 1 Gbps plan at $82.18, $102,93 and $395.90 (no discount rate). Although it is more pricey, they throw in a 2Mbps mobile broadband, free fixed line,  free 10 music DRM download. A slightly more expensive plan includes the 3 basic groups of PAY TV with discounts for hubstation hd rental and upsize groups.

Singtel does not have low speed plans  (<100Mbps) but focus more on bundling tv and video services to their plans. Their plans starts from 150Mbps priced at S$85.90 which is similar to Starhub’s 100Mbps cable broadband plan. M1 will offer a 3-month free trial of the fibre broadband service at 100Mbps to residential customers whose homes are ready for service. Customers can sign up for the free trial only on 1 September at any M1 Shop.

The other plans offer a speed of 200Mbps which are quite similar as they’re bundled with tv and video services. Prices range from $95.90 to $109.90. If you are a football fan, the exPlore Home Sports Package might interest you. Of course, you would also get some discount with your singtel mobile line.

M1, the new comer has more variety ranging from 25Mbps to 1Gbps. 1Gbps would be too costly at S$399 per month. The more affordable plans would be the 25Mbps at S$39, 50Mbps at S$49 and 100Mbps at S$59. Just like Singtel, M1 also offer a Fixed Line thrown in for free incoming and outgoing calls.

Starhub has yet to offer their pricing structure. LGA telecoms has revealed on straits times that they do have a S$50 for 50Mbps plan in line. The other operator SuperInternet is prepared but yet to reveal pricing information of their services.

We have consolidated a chart which comprises of the existing data we gathered from various press releases and news over the internet for your easy reference.
