Video Review of the ASUS Eee pad Transformer
bluetooth 30 Apr 2011

We attended the press event of the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. We were fortunately to have time with the marketing manager to run through some of the features of the tablet.

Without going through the details, you probably already knew about the Eee Pad transformer. This Android 3.0 powered tablet is the first to be able to mount on to a QWERTY keyboard docking station, which offers two USB slots, SD card reader, and extends the battery life up to 16 hours. It comes powered by the NVIDIA® Tegra™ 2 dual-core processor making it one of the fastest tablets among it’s competitors.

For clarity, it uses a 10.1″ IPS panel with scratch-resistant glass that is viewable at angles of up to 178 degrees. The built-in SRS Sound technology provides users with a 3D stereo audio experience with maximum bass response and a wide sound field from its discrete speakers housed in the 12.98mm thick frame that weighs only 680g. The Transformer comes with a 5MP rear and 1.2MP front facing camera that can shoot and record videos which can be played back in video on HDTVs via a mini HDMI output port.

The Transformer is Polaris® Office® 3.0, a professional Mobile Office Solution which enables users to edit various types of office documents including documents (.doc), spreadsheets (.xls) and presentation (.ppt) files, turning the Transformer into a mobile warrior at work. The Transformer turns into a versatile media hub with a touchpad, 3.5mm audio jack, two USB ports as well as a built-in SD Card reader for easy file sharing and storage expandability. The docking station also extends the otherwise 9.5 hours* of battery life to 16 hours*.

The Eee Pad Transformer comes with ASUS Waveshare UI on top of the HoneyComb OS. It supports Adobe Flash 10.2 so that web sites looks exactly just like the desktop experience. The Transformer hosts a variety of unique applications such as MyNet, MyLibrary, MyCloud, and more. First look of ASUS P8Z68-V Pro motherboard
Bluetooth 28 Apr 2011

The ASUS P8Z68-V Pro motherboard is one of the first ASUS’s Z68 motherboards to be announced in May 2011. Early this year, various vendors already released boards based on Intel P67 and H67 chipsets. One thing to note is that both chipset have a number of limitations. For P67, you can’t use the Quick Sync media accelerators packed inside Intel’s second-generation Core architecture. With H67, you can’t overclock the same CPU. e.g. Core i5-2500K.

The Z68 chipset comes as a hybrid between the P67 and the H67 platform controller hubs (PCHs) and was designed to allow overclocking Sandy Bridge CPUs while using the integrated graphics. This will significantly speed up the transcoding process without affecting the image quality of the resulting video, and only requires a Lucidlogix Virtu driver which enables on-the-fly GPU switching.

In addition, the Z68 chipset supports Intel Smart Response Technology, allowing you to use a SSD as a memory cache to see up your disk access.

Basically, this board doesn’t differ too much from the earlier designs. It supports the LGA1555 socket for intel 2nd generation core i7/i5/i3 processors. It has 4 DIMM support max of 32GB of DDR3-2200 (OC)/2133/1866/1600/1333/1066MHz unbuffered memory.

It has 2 PCIe 2.0 x16 slots (single @16, dual @8+8), 1 PCIe 2.0×16 (max x4 mode), 2 PCIe2.0x1 and 2 PCI slots. Video output includes supports of HDMI, DVI-D, D-SUB. Storage supports 4 SATA 6.0Gbps (2 grey, 2 navy blue connectors), 4 SATA 3.0Gbps ports (blue) and 1 eSATA 3.0Gbs/ port. Blue and Grey ports support the Intel Smart Response Technology.  The GbE LAN is powered by Intel 82579 Gbe LAN controller.

Audio is powered by ALC 892 8 ch audio. There are 2 USB 3.0 ports for front panel, 2 USB 3.0 at the back panel (blue) and 12 USB 2.0 ports (6 port at mid board , 6 ports at back panel). There is a Bluetooth module on board for BT GO! support. Other features of this board includes Dual Intelligent Processors 2 with DIGI+ VRM, TPU (simple onboard switch to boost system performance), EPU (Energy efficiency), BT GO ! (Transfer files, Remote control of PC) and UEFI BIOS (EZ mode) to control the setup BIOS of the mainboard.

Below are pictures of the package and mainboard. Watch out for our review come May 2011.

HTC Flyer launched in Singapore
Bluetooth 26 Apr 2011

HTC Singapore launched the highly anticipated tablet at the Art House in Singapore. The crowd gathered around 3.30pm and the event started with an introduction of the features of the tablet.

The first thing we noticed about the Grey-white finished tablet is pretty lightweight. In fact it weighs only 415 grams with the battery within. On powered on, you will be greeted with the familiar HTC design. HTC Sense is also overlaid on top of the Android OS making it easy to access the HTC apps e.g. Weather forecast. The HTC Flyer’s 7-inch display and super fast 1.5 GHz Qualcomm MSM 8255 processor is pretty responsive I would say, making it perfect for watching video clips. Adobe Flash, multi window pinch and zoom are supported. It has a dimension of 195.4mm (L) X 122mm (W) X 13.2mm (T) which is similar to a paper back book.

HTC Flyer does differ from most other Android tablet design. It incorporates a magic pen. In fact, in most of the demonstrations, HTC emphasied a lot on this feature. The pen transforms anything. Draw, paint, write, and even retouch pictures on your tablet with ease. You can also use it as a highlighter for the reader, collating all your highlights when you’re done. Link audio to the notes you take for work and even add voic eover to a storybook you’re drawing up at home.

Although SKYPE is not preloaded into the unit, the Flyer comes with two cameras, one front and one back. you can use that to do video conferencing with ease.

HTC Flyer will be available through mobile operators and authorized retailers at a suggested retail price of S$1068 from May 2011 onwards.

In the following pages are videos of the device in detail.

According to various sources, we found out that Gigabyte is about to implement some changes to their aging BIOS. Instead of the usual White on Blue text based BIOS, the new BIOS is known as Touch BIOS.

As it’s name implies, this BIOS is probably going to appear on touch screen devices since the name TOUCH BIOS. The Icon based user interface seems to be follow the trend on touch screen phones.

If you do not have a touch screen device, it will work with a mouse too. Below are screen shots from Gigabyte tech daily.

The Next Web reports that a free iPhone app called Untrackerd can be used to delete any of the location data recorded to your device — and to prevent any further data from being saved. There’s a catch though: The app only works if you’ve jailbroken your iPhone.

Jailbreaking — as the process of unlocking iOS devices so that they can run unauthorized software is called — is a quick and simple task at this point and can be done by anyone. In fact, tip site Lifehacker maintains an “always up-to-date” guide which will show you how to get through the whole task in just a few clicks.

Once you’ve jailbroken your iPhone, all you need to do is download Untrackerd from the Cydia Store and let it do its thing:

A package [will install a] daemon (process that can run in the background) to clean consolidated.db file. No new icons are added to your homescreen. There are no options to configure.

That’s it. Sounds simple enough.

A few cautions before you run off, jailbreak your iPhone, and download Untrackerd:

  • There can be risks to jailbreaking. Some legit apps might not run correctly or your iPhone may act up in strange ways. Your phone may also be left with some security vulnerabilities.
  • Untrackerd was created by a third-party — and while that individual’s intentions are probably good — no one’s checked whether the app itself does anything shady while cleaning up your data.

According to a recent article that appeared on kitguru, it is said that Gigabyte is abandoning the P67 and H67 in favour of Z68.

“Gigabyte has made its last P67 mainboard and cancelled all future production – that’s the stunning news that has just filtered into KitGuru’s newsroom. Shocking stuff, but is it real and, if so, what does it mean”.

According to our sources direct from Gigabyte, the media in question is misinformed. He told us that the INTEL H67 is still on their roadmap for another 4 quarters and P67 is at least until Q1 2012. That UK media is misinformed.

Gigabyte G1 Sniper Intel X58 Gaming motherboard Review
Bluetooth 16 Apr 2011

Motherboard makers have always been looking for ways to explore ways to innovate their motherboards. We have seen Multimedia capable ITX boards to full fledged workstation class boards in the past. One segment that have been left out is the gaming enthusiasts. Although this is a niche group, but they form the highest spending group among the buyers. Periodic upgrades of graphics cards, CPUs, RAMs just to get an upper hand in action gaming as speed is important to them.

A couple of weeks ago, Gigabyte introduced their first series of gaming boards. These gaming boards are quite different from the regular motherboards. They are not only design for performance and reliability, it also has a unique design and enhance audio and network capability.

Based on the proven tri channel memory architecture Intel X58+ICH 10R chipsets, this board supports the Socket 1366 processor. It has 3 full length PCIe 2.0 slots and support either NVIDIA 3 way SLI or AMD 3 way CrossFire X.

For maximum speed, the board uses  the gamer’s choice networking platform – Bigfoot Killer E2100 Game Networking Platform. This network has a dedicated 1GB of DDR2 memory directly onboard G1. Sniper for up to 10X faster networking performance; allowing gamer to move faster and shoot quicker. For better sound quality, Gigabyte puts aside the conventional 7.1ch audio and replaced it with Creative’s SoundBlaster X-Fi Digital audio processor (20K2) with X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity and EAX AHD 5.0 technologies. There is also a built in 15 ohm load amplifier for front audio headphone. It also uses high quality Nichicon MUSE ES and MW series Bi Polarised audio capacitors at each channel for high quality sound. On top of that it supports Dolby Digital Live and DTS.

For quick access to files, the board is equippde with 2 USB 3.0 ports for quick connectivity. The backplane also comes with power eSATA ports. There is also a quick boost button allowing gamers to instantaneously overclock their system with the click of a button.

The board can support up to 4 USB 3.0 ports (2 front, 2 back), SATA6 Gbps by Marvell and 3X power boost on all USB ports for power hungry USB devices (for charging).

Below is an unboxing video of the board. On the next few pages, we will take a look at the various aspects of the motherboard.
