Tonight marks the end of 3G network for M1 Singapore after serving it for almost 2 decades. In just another half an hour, we should be seeing the signal go offline.
Why the Change?
M1 is decommissioning its 3G network to make way for faster and more advanced 4G and 5G technologies. 3G has become outdated compared to these newer options, which provide superior speed and reliability.
Other than smartphone, many other equipment must be 4G capable. For example, we noticed that the NETS terminal is already 4G ready earlier this July. Some older devices that require 3G connection will not function after the shutdown.
As M1 is the first to shutdown it’s 3G network, tourists coming that once roam on 3G network will not be able to do so anymore.
By reintroducing the 3G band B1 and combining it with the current n1 band, M1 will create a larger 25 MHz block for 5G services. This will enable M1 to support two 5G SA networks: one utilizing the existing n78 band and the other leveraging the newly expanded n1 band. This upgrade will significantly improve coverage in areas where the n78 band alone cannot reach.
What About Singtel and StarHub?
While M1 has already shut down its 3G network, Singtel and StarHub are pushing back their 3G shutdowns to November 2024. This means that if you’re with Singtel or StarHub, you have a bit more time to prepare for the switch.
As we move forward, embracing 4G and 5G networks will offer you a better mobile experience and open the door to new technologies. Stay updated and make sure you’re ready for these changes!
