20 Aug 2019

Smartphones are now becoming more of a all in one device. Major brands have been enhacing the features of their phones with newer releases almost every alternate month.

This year, we see the trend moving high megapixel smartphones appearing across the mid and high end smart phones. Interestingly, these smartphones have emphasied on it’s capability of doing powerful digital zoom.

Oppo Reno 10X zoom features a 48MP ultra-clear main camera, 13MP telephoto lens and 8MP wide-angle lens make up the Reno 10x Zoom tri-lens setup. By combining three lenses over different focal ranges, this achieves a full bandwidth of 16-160mm, an effective focal length 10 times that of an ultra wide-angle lens. The tri-camera setup complemented by dual OIS for ensuring stability even when fully zoomed on hand-held operation.

In addtional to the camera feautres, the 6.6″ smartphone is powered by Snapdragon 855 for a snappy experience. It run Android 9 with ColorOS 6 and comes with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB of storage. It also has a huge battery capacity of 4065mAh.

Oppo Reno 10X zoom is one of the two phones that challengers the impossible with a Digital zoom of up to 60X. While other brands feature it capable of taking a clean cut moon photo which leads to controversial, will the Oppo Reno 10X zoom be able to do the same ?

Although the OPPO Reno 10x ZOOM is powered by the same Snapdragon 845 processor, the Antutu benchmark shows that there are still some difference in benchmark scores, giving it a rank of 10 of 10.

The phone is snappy with it’s ColorOS UI. I like the side bar concept which makes it easy to launch commonly use apps.

The phone comes with a “eSIM” solution call ORoaming. This is handy as it comes preinstalled with data roaming packages that you can activate on the demand. That is to say, if you don’t have any SIM within, you can still data roam in the supported countries by activating ORoaming service on the Reno 10X Zoom smartphone. The charges aren’t cheap though.

A Singtel MVNO – GRID is used on this dual SIM phone together with TPG 4G SIM. As VoLTE service is enabled with TPG, the phone will be able to make voice calls out of the box when you pair it with TPG.

With 4G+ support, speeds can easily go beyond 100 Mbps using the GRID SIM.

Moon shot was shot with 20X digital zoom. Although we can take it at 60X, the image is no longer clear. Anything beyond 20X digital zoom will require a steady hand or tripod to get a steady image.

Here are some indoor and night shots. Compared to the Pixel 3 XL and Huawei Nova 3i, the colours are not as saturated. If you like colours that POP, perhaps a instagram filter might help.

[nextpage title=”Conclusion”]Conclusion

The Oppo Reno 10X Zoom is an all rounder, be it in the performance and in photography. Being the only smartphone that is based on the Snapdraon 855 and offers a 60X Digital Zoom, it is definitely a good alternative to the Huawei P30 Pro (based on Kirin 980).

The Reno 10X zoom comes with a 4065mAh Battery + VOOC 3.0 Flash Charge. In our test, it can finish charging it within 1 hr 35 mins while it took almost 2 hrs to completely charge up the Pixel 3 XL.

As a photographic centric smartphone, the Oppo Reno 10X Zoom takes excellent photos even at 10X using a mixture of optical and digital. 20X is still acceptable but anything above it really requires steady hands or a tripod to take a shot which may lack details. Taking night shots is easy with is  wide aperture and bigger sensor size smartphones available in the market. We took quite a few shots and the image quality is very good. As compared to the Pixel 3 XL, the colours are less saturated which may need some adjustments through software to attain the punch that most people prefer.

Although I like the idea of mechnically hidding the front lens to give you a full screen bezelless experience, the chances of a malfunction due to mechnical wear and tear cannot be dismissed.

The Oppo Reno 10X zoom is now available on Lazada and Qoo10 from S$988It is also retailing on Amazon US retailer from USD 687
