On 7 Feb 2020, Singapore government raised its Disease Outbreak Response System Condition (DORSCON) level to Orange. This is after a few new cases of infection of the Corona virus of residents without traceable source of human to human infection.
The news about panic buying in the region like Hong Kong and Taiwan could be another cause that cause this panic of hoarding groceries.
Shelves on retail outlets were cleaned out. Rice, noddles etc are simply wiped off the shelves. Such scene has never happened in Singapore.
Some turned to online retailers and found that there are no schedule dates for delivery. Some retailers website also was set to maintainence mode due to the overwhemling of orders.
Politicians, supermarkets urge calm amid panic-buying of groceries but that didn’t stop residents from swamping to nearby supermarkets queueing up even before it is opened for business.
