SkyFire 2.2 beta for Android is released; available at Android Market

Posted on 14 July 2010 by

The update is available in the Android Marketplace and the full version number is 2.2.0.18794.

What’s new in this release?

  • GeoLocation Support.  Skyfire now supports the HTML5 GeoLocation feature. Thus, for example, Google and other web pages that use the location feature will be fully working.
  • Vertical Search Results. When searching with Skyfire several result options are available, such as Google, Videos, Trends, Twitter and Amazon. We will add more providers from time to time, so send us feedback.
  • Set as Default Browser. For Android 1.5 to 2.1 Skyfire supports setting the default browser option within Skyfire. Unfortunately, Android 2.2 does not provide that option.

Enhancements in this release

  • Android 2.2 / FroYo enhancements: Fixed some cosmetic and crash related issues that were FroYo specific.
  • Flash 10.1 related enhancements: Addressed UI overlap and background audio issues with Flash. We recommend that users change the Plug-in setting to “On Demand” under the Browser Settings tab for snappier browsing experience.
  • Updated Video startup behavior: We optimized the video start sequence to clearly differentiate between pre-loading and buffering.
  • Disable standard Zoom buttons: we reintroduced this feature (was missing in Skyfire 2.1). Thus you can remove the +/- zoom buttons if they are not wanted.
  • Improved Pinch to zoom for HTC devices (Evo, Incredible etc).  We found a way to reduce the page shifting behavior after pinching that was systemic to some HTC devices.
  • Fixed some crash and force close related issues that we found.

Known Issues

  • Finding videos and 25% stuck issues. Supporting videos from millions of websites on the Web is not a trivial undertaking. We are getting better and better at it and support more than 100,000 websites and counting. Another major upgrade due out soon so stay tuned.
  • Hulu: Won’t work since Hulu does not have the rights to support content for mobile devices and thus is blocking Skyfire.

WINDFORCETM – GIGABYTE’s Latest Cooling Solution
GIGABYTE introduces WINDFORCE™, the latest cooling technology that differentiates the brand’s graphics cards from the rest. GIGABYTE understands that a fan is crucial to the graphics card, so only the fan with the most efficiency is selected for WINDFORCE™. To qualify for WINDFORCE™, a fan must be equipped with anti-turbulence inclined-fin, ultra quiet PWM fan and pure copper heat pipe. Inclined-fins help to reduce excessive heat and upward turbulence. Depending on its orientation, there are 3 types of inclined-fin designs: parallel-inclined, mirroring-inclined and 3D-inclined. Each type generates excellent exterior airflow for efficient heat dissipation from the interior GPU core.

WINDFORCETM 2X: Anti-turbulence Cooling
The special inclined dual fan design effectively minimizes the flow of turbulence between two fans and enhances heat dissipation of hot area right underneath each fan. By unique design, WINDFORCETM 2X even enlarges air channel on the graphics card vents and creates a more effective air flow system in chassis. This special design helps heat dissipate quickly from GPU. In addition, WINDFORCETM 2X is equipped with 2 copper heat-pipes which strengthen the speed of heat dissipation.

Industry Leading Component Quality
GIGABYTE’s own Ultra Durable VGA Technology guarantees better overclocking capability, lower GPU temperature, and great power efficiency by using 2 oz PCB board, Samsung and Hynix memory, Japanese solid capacitors, Ferrite/Metal core chokes, and Low RDS (on) mosfet. Industry leading quality better meets the most critical gamers’ needs.

Video Review of the LG GD880 Mini Feature Phone
Bluetooth  11 Jul 2010

Looking for a small size feature phone? THe LG GD880 will fit the bill. The first sight of it reminds me of the minis from various manufacturers, all trying to outbid one another to make it more compact and handy.

Finished in polished black with silver lining, this phone looks very unique just like the LG BL40 which is longer in size. It has icons and widgets similar to those you commonly see on Android phones.

The GD880 uses a 3.2″ TFT capacitive touchscreen, 16M Colors of Size 480 x 854 pixels and is powered by the ARM11 processor which is used in the original iPhone 3G.

Although the GD880 Mini is not a smartphone, it has some neat features that address the social media users.  You have  3 page customisable desktop (with widgets, shortucts, icons). They are widgets available for download for real time Facebook and Twitter updates on the 3 page desktop. When the desktop gets too messy, you can just shake the phone and it will help you arrange them in an orderly fashion.

The phone has a 10.6mm Slim 3.2″ Multi-touch LCD. It has  built-in Phantom Browser (Support Flash-lite v3.1). It supports Wi-Fi, HSDPA 7.2Mbps & GPS and comes with a 5MP Camera with Auto Focus & Face Detection (no flash). The GD880 also supports 2 finger pinch and zoom for pictures and in the browser to manify the text. There is a FM Radio built in.

LG GD880 is the first to implement the LG Air Sync. LG Air Sync allows you to synchronize your mobile with the computer without USB. A simple right click can select, resize, and crop from a PC or a website, and send directly to your LG Mini. You could also retrieve important information, like contact list, schedule and memo from your LG Air Sync account.

Youtube now supports 4096p video playback

Posted on 10 July 2010 by

Today at the VidCon 2010 conference, we announced support for videos shot in 4K (a reference resolution of 4096 x 3072), meaning that now we support original video resolution from 360p all the way up to 4096p. To give some perspective on the size of 4K, the ideal screen size for a 4K video is 25 feet; IMAX movies are projected through two 2k resolution projectors.

We always want videos on YouTube to be available in the highest quality possible, as creators intend. In December of last year, we announced support for 1080p, or full HD. At 4096 x 3072 pixels, 4K is nearly four times the size of 1080p. To view any video in a source resolution greater than 1080p, select “Original” in the video quality pulldown menu:

To illustrate the power of 4K, please check out the videos in this playlist; each one was created by a filmmaker with access to a 4K camera. (Be warned: watching videos in 4K, even on YouTube, will require ultra-fast high-speed broadband connections).

Because 4K represents the highest quality of video available, there are a few limitations that you should be aware of. First off, video cameras that shoot in 4K aren’t cheap, and projectors that show videos in 4K are typically the size of a small refrigerator. And, as we mentioned, watching these videos on YouTube will require super-fast broadband.

Gigabyte NVIDIA GTX 460 Graphics card details leaked on net

Posted on 09 July 2010 by

Gigabyte, in a sales kit presentation to its distribution partners, detailed its upcoming GeForce GTX 460 768MB product, the GV-N460D5-768I-B. This card sticks to the NVIDIA reference design, including reference clock speeds, and is positioned at the US $199 price point. What’s more interesting about these sales kit slides is the performance and market position described by Gigabyte. The GTX 460, according to the company, is said to perform “close” to generic ATI Radeon HD 5830. The keyword here is “close”, as HD 5830 is still the faster card.

Gigabyte also demonstrated the card in a variety of games and benchmarks, where it was pitted against GeForce GTX 465, Radeon HD 5830, and some older GeForce 200 series cards. Tests included 3DMark06, 3DMark Vantage (performance preset) and 3DMark Vantage (extreme preset). While in 3DMark06 and 3DMark Vantage (P) it outpaces the HD 5830, the HD 5830 edges past it in 3DMark Vantage (X). The two also trade blows in DirectX 11 benchmarks. While the GTX 460 maintains some lead over the HD 5830 in older game tests, the HD 5830 does manage to outperform in some tests.

Samsung Galaxy S laggy performance due to different firmware?

Posted on 09 July 2010 by

We have done a video review of the Samsung Galaxy S in the past and was quite impressed with the speed as compared to the iPhone 3GS. The set we had our hands on previously was a review set with an older firmware.

Our team bypass a local telco shop and decide to give it a try. The set is customised with a lot of add on shortcuts etc to specific services provided by the telco. We tried it out and was dismay by the performance. Here is a video of it shot using iPhone 3GS.

So, what is the problem? Is it due to the firmware or over customisation of the phone? Nobody knows until you flash in an European firmware to see the difference.

The original video review can be found here.

NDrive comes to Android

Posted on 08 July 2010 by

USA, 08 July 2010 — The Android OS user base is experiencing immerse growth. Accordingly, competition in the open source application market can be fierce due to the shear amount of applications. The nature of the Android market demands top-quality from developers to differentiate from a vast sea of similar applications. An explosion of activity, and updates for the latest versions of Android OS are occurring frequently. With Froyo being released more than a month ago, early adopters of the new OS, such as NDrive, a leading Android on-board navigation system provider, have created significant exposure or a ‘Big-Hit’ in the market

NDrive’s exposure stems from not only a sound platform to be quickly implemented to a new OS, but developers strategically positioning their applications to win.
