When Computerworld questioned ASUS CEO, Jonney Shih, about how his company would fight off competition from Apple’s upcoming tablet, he said: “Also we will try to provide a ‘secret weapon’, something we have not shown at this time but closer to the launch time we will show.”

Although no further details are revealed, rumour has it that ASUS’ secret weapon is in fact a 3D tablet. During the interview, Shih went on to talk about his belief that 3D glasses will fall away this year, stating that “[3D] may be possible on smaller tablets without wearing glasses”. He also hinted that the company could be planing to work with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 3D processor, and if that isn’t a clue – I don’t know what is.

Little else was revealed, although Shih did mention that 2011 would see personal computing move increasingly from the device into the cloud, and that he only sees room for three operating systems: iOS, Android and Windows.

With Apple expected to launch the iPad 2 later this month, we could be seeing an imminent announcement from ASUS and its “secret weapon”.
