Today, we have our first hands-on with OPPO’s OPPO X 2021 rollable concept phone. OPPO chose to uses a proprietary innovative technology, the device features a scroll-like, expandable display that removes the “hard folding” typically associated with foldable smartphones.

6.7″ front screen

Powered by OPPO proprietary innovative technology, the device features a scroll-like, expandable display that removes the “hard folding” typically associated with foldable smartphones.

In normal mode 6.7″ the back looks just like any other smartphone

With a finger slide of the side of the smartphone, the OLED screen can expand and retract between a 6.7″ screen into a 7.4″ screen. In fact, the concept is quite similar to the Oppo Reno 10X zoom which mechnically slide up the camera.

After a slide, the screen slides sideways. The whole process is seamless and smooth.

In the demo, a video which is playing auto resizes to fit the screen and yet maintain the film’s aspect ratio. The same applies to the user interface.

Expanded mode with 7.4″ screen

According to OPPO, the screen is guranteed to last over 100,000 retractions and extensions without resulting in any crease. It can easily last you for 2 to 3 years of usage.

Backplate of the smartphone in expanded mode

The smartphone is pretty thin. When it is in normal 6.7″ mode, it is just like holding to a normal smartphone. When expanded into a 7.4″ screen, you might have to hold it with two hands when working on it.

As it is still a prototype, the specifications and features are not disclosed and are subjected to changes. There is also no expected launch date.

The OPPO’s rollable concept should work but we have to be mindful of battery drain if one were to keep expanding and contracting the screen.

The rollable smartphone is now available for preview exclusively at OPPO’s flagship store at Suntec City.

So, how much would you pay for such a smartphone? Comment below.
