Technology evolves and we have seen Korean players with Smart TVs, that is TV sets which can stream IPTV contents onto the large screen in your living room. Although the Korean players had the lead, their sets are not on the shelves in Japan.
Panasonic lately released a Smart TV for the Japanese market. According to AFP, broadcasters have refused to transmit the ad because viewers might be confused by its demonstration of Panasonic’s Smart TV interface, which mixes terrestrial TV with web content courtesy of a rather ordinary split-screen feature. This reason is not very convicing. It just shows that Japanese broadcasters felt the threat from IPTV to erode their profits in the long run.
