Oppo Reno8 Pro 5G is the successor to the mid range Reno 7 Pro 5G. Sharing a common camera setup, the Reno8 Pro is enhanced with the Marisilicon X NPU.

On first sight, the Reno8 5G Pro 5G feature a Streamlined Unibody Design that looks very similar to the Find X5 Pro 5G especially when it is observed from the back.

It has a 6.7-inch Ultra-Clear AMOLED display with a 93.4% screen-to-body ratio, 120Hz refresh rate and supports 1 billion colours for a guaranteed smoother and more comfortable viewing experience with enhanced interaction. The display is also HDR10+, SGS Low Motion Blur and SGS Low Blue Light certified, and HD & HDR certified for Amazon and Netflix. Measuring just 7.34 mm in thickness, and weighing just 183 g, Reno8 Pro 5G is the thinnest Reno series handset to date and is available in two new stunning colour finishes – Glazed Green and Glazed Black.

Similar to the Reno7 Pro 5G, the Reno8 Pro 5G is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 8100-MAX 5G SoC which supports 5G NSA/SA networks which works with the local telco’s 5G SA (M1) or 5G NSA network (Gomo, SIMBA)

In terms of battery, Oppo Reno8 Pro 5G comes with a 4500mAh battery and it supports 80W SuperVOCC charging gives you 50% with a 11 Minutes Charge.

In terms of camera setup, the Reno8 Pro 5G shares the same sensors used on the Reno7 Pro 5G, the Sony IMX 709 front camera and Sony IMX 766 for back camera. There is also a 8MP wide angle and 2 MP Macro at the back panel.

Sony IMX709 is a next-generation RGBW 32MP camera sensor customised by OPPO. It ensures a 60% increase in light intake and a 35% improvement in noise reduction when compared with traditional RGB sensors. Together with OPPO’s self-designed Quadra Binning algorithm, every selfie will look dynamically bright and sharp no matter in lowlight or backlight scenes. IMX709 also supports AutoFocus on the front camera for the first time, enabling 2x zoom when taking selfies. With a minimum focal distance of 15cm, it’s possible to capture super close-up shots using the front camera, offering unprecedented detail in selfies.

Sony IMX766 is a 1/1.56-inch 50MP main camera sensor with 1.0um large pixel size. It captures more lights and guarantees an improved image brightness in dark environments. Combined with the All-Pixel Omni-Direction PDAF technology, this camera sensor improves focus speed, accuracy, and stability.

OPPO Reno8 series also comes packed with a series of portrait features driven by leading AI technologies.

  • Ultra Night Video algorithm enhances the image quality, colour expression, and facial performance in lowlight environments, delivering sharp and bright night portrait videos. It is automatically enabled for nighttime shooting.
  • Ultra HDR Video mode prevents bright parts from over-exposure and enriches dark parts with subtle details, thereby producing natural portrait videos with vivid colours. It is automatically enabled in scenes with a large lighting ratio.
  • Night Portrait leverages industry-leading Turbo RAW algorithm to perform AI noise reduction in the RAW domain, delivering clear and pure portrait images.

Powered by MariSilicon X and the Dual Sony Flagship Sensors, Reno8 Pro 5G also provides a flagship-level portrait camera experience for the first time at this price point by bringing 4K video shooting to a smartphone with 4K Ultra Night Video and 4K Ultra HDR Video.

The Oppo Reno8 Pro supports Normal or AI enhanced modes for both photos and video shots.

In most circumstances, setting to AI will auto detect the scene and set the appropirate settings for the best shots.

For example, photos shots in Night mode will usually turn out brighter but that also introduce a bit more noise into the picture. Thanks to Marisilicon X, photos shots at night are processed within 2 secs. Just click ,snap and you are done. The photo mode allows a digital zoom of up to 20X.

As for video, the same technology is applied to filming in 4K video but somewhat it is restricted to only 30 fps when AI Highlighted Video is turn on. The max digital zoom is 10X.

Videos shot in low light is “highlighted” and brighter when Ultra night video algorithm kicks in. The EIS does help to stabilise the videos while recording while walking, the footages tends to flicker a lot. It is unknown why Oppo didn’t include a OIS into the Reno series.

We tested the phone with both the M1 5G SIM running on band 78 Standalone and GOMO 5G on Non Standalone network. The results are encouraging. In actual fact, it seems to outperform the Snapdragon 5G modems.

M1 scores 583 Mbps downlink and 23 Mbps for Uplink
Gomo scores 695 Mbps downlink and 106 Mbps for uplink

[nextpage title=”Conclusion”]

Oppo Reno8 Pro 5G is the third phone we tested based on the Mediatek Dimensity 1200. Processor wise, this mid ranger is quite responsive and is on par with the Mi 10T Pro that is my daily driver. In fact, it runs cooler than some of my Snapdragon 865 or 8 Gen 1.

This newer design looks elegant and is a great improvement over the Reno7 Pro 5G. From the back, it looks a bit similar to the Find X5 Pro.

The back camera takes impressive takes surprising good pictures even in dark environment. In fact, night camera shots are so quick compared to the previous generation. In 4K video shooting mode, with AI enhancement enabled, it is capable of taking really clean and brighter night videos. Unfortunately, when AI enhancement mode is enabled, it can only shoot in 30 fps. The phone still lacks OIS.

As for 5G SA and NSA compatibility, this phone works with the M1 5G SA network and Gomo 5G NSA out of the box. We haven’t tested the SIMBA 5G NSA but we suspect it should work well with most 5G NSA networks.

In Conclusion, I think Oppo Reno8 Pro 5G is a smartphone that is speedy in performance in terms of processing and download speed (5G), it is also capable of night video shoot in HDR and Night mode which is only available on the premium models. Pair it up with a gimbal, this phone might be one of the more affordable smartphone for vlogging.
