The long wait is over, WP 7.5 is here to stay. Although Mango has brought some new features like Asian language input (but less menus in Asian language), it did not deliver the highly anticipated feature – Tethering via USB or WIFI. These two popular features are readily available on iPhone and Android phones.
According to media representatives, they said that the updates will be available to first generation Windows Phone 7 at a later date. There is no indication when will it be available.

So far, for Singapore, HTC trophy 7 (M1) has already delivered it’s updates while LG Optimus 7 from Singtel hasn’t got the update signal yet.

Windows Phone 7.5 Mango brings new life to Windows Phone
Bluetooth 28 Sep 2011

It has been months since we received the NoDo update which didn’t impress us. Just 1 hour ago, I received a notification to update it to the Wp 7.5 (Mango). I hook up my HTC trophy 7 and update it through Zune downloading the massive update via internet.

Once the update is done, you will be greeted with a RED colour Windows Logo. In split seconds you will be greeted with the usual tiles screen somewhat with a updated font.

A flip to the right shows us the applications tha are previously installed. I notice the slight change in layout. It now includes a search app option and the apps are now arranged just the way the phone book is, categorising them under alphabetical order.

Asian users have always been concerned about the Asian language support. Wp7.5 didn’t forget about this part of the world. Although display language and menus are still restricted to 5 European languages, input methods include Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The Chinese language includes handwriting too.

The popular mobile messaging application WhatsApp is now available in the Marketplace for downloading. This cross platform tool allows free “sms” to other platform users on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. It it definitely a great tool to have on the Windows Platform. Unfortunately, SKYPE is still not available on this platform.

A check on the HTC Apps in Marketplace, I discovered 2 new apps, one is Locations and the other is Connected Media.

Locations is for you to save your favourite location with photos, voice and notes. You can also share it with friends. The second is Connected Media. It is  software that allows you to view photos and play music or video stored on media servers. you can also send media from your device to networked media players such as TV or Set top boxes.

In settings, you will also find a new item “background tasks” which  list the apps that can continue to run in the background.

The new IE is refreshing too. The default screen appears in full screen with the URL bar relocated to the bottom of the screen.

So far, after 30 minutes of running on this new update, I wouldn’t find 500 updates but have found most of the improvements I wanted. One of the disappointment is the menu screen which is still not configurable to other Asian languages. The other feature that is missing is Tethering. According to our PR contact, the Tethering feature will be added on in another update (with no dates specified). Well, I can live with it so long there is WhatsApp.

WP7.5 is a leap ahead for Microsoft that is long overdued. The next apps that will make Windows Phone 7.5 more complete would be SKYPE, banking applications.

So have you installed yours ? Post your comments at the end of the post.

Apple will launch its next-generation iPhone 5 in five initial markets on October 14th according to a new report from Macotakara. The site, which has a mixed track record, reports that Apple will release the new device in the United States, the U.K., Germany, Japan and France on that date, with launches in additional markets to follow. The date aligns closely with earlier comments from France Telecom CEO Stéphane Richard, who said the iPhone 5 would launch from Orange on October 15th, a Saturday. Apple launched the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS on Fridays, and the iPhone 4 launched on a Thursday last year. Apple CEO Tim Cook is expected to unveil at least one new iPhone model next week at a press conference to be held at the company’s Cupertino, California campus.

Microsoft Taiwan has put up a website indicating the availability of update of Windows Phone 7 to Mango firmware. The two phones that are supported are HTC HD7 and Mozart. Although Microsoft Windows Phone 7 supports updating using Zune, the Mango update will not be delivered through this method. Instead, end users have to bring the phones to the locations indicated at this website to do a flash update by person.

This is probably because, the current firmware are European firmware which has no Asian language support (menus and input). So the new firmware will probably erased everything and start off from scratch. The online update probably does not support such a feature to clean up the firmware totally but leave the base language intact. That is why a clean flash is required at the selected service centres.

recently launched the AMD E-450 and E-300 APUs, running at 1.65 GHz and 1.3 GHz, respectively. Systems based on the E-450 and E-300 deliver exceptional performance and value.  Like systems based on the E-350, they also feature excellent video playback, DirectX 11-capable graphics and extremely power efficient x86 performance.

The AMD APU is revolutionary in many ways but it is important to highlight the significant contribution of power efficiency and battery life for mobile lifestyles.  Before the AMD APU, many entry level notebooks did not have great battery life.  The AMD E-450 and E-300 enable fantastic mobility and a great computing experience.

What you are seeing in the video are systems powered by the AMD E-450 and E-300, demonstrating that these systems:

  • Offer better battery life than competing systems based on our competitor’s products
  • When looking at scripting software to simulate real world workloads in productivity and gaming, these systems deliver the same or better performance in a more power efficient manner
  • Offer better power efficiency and better platform thermals, which can result in cooler user experience

Broadcom Corp. (BRCM) stands out as one of the biggest beneficiaries from orders from Apple Inc. (AAPL), whose need for parts that go into iPhones and iPads represents a bright spot for a semiconductor industry plagued by weak demand.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Broadcom’s biggest supplier, last week said third-quarter sales would exceed earlier forecasts because of rush orders from an unnamed customer. Other large Taiwan Semiconductor clients have disclosed disappointing results, suggesting that the customer was probably Broadcom, rushing to meet demand from Apple, according to a supply-chain analysis by Bloomberg.

Apple is expected to announce a new iPhone by the end of October and will expand its availability in the U.S. to include Sprint Nextel Corp., people familiar with the matter said last week. The company also is expanding in China, where sales grew sixfold last quarter and new retail stores are planned.

Broadcom rose 55 cents to $34.77 in Nasdaq Stock Market trading yesterday. The company, whose stock has dropped 20 percent this year, may be spared from the struggles of other chipmakers because of Apple.

Windows 8 Developer Preview
Bluetooth 14 Sept 2011

This morning, Microsoft just released the Developer preview of Windows 8 (x86/x64). We have heard a lot about this upcoming OS. Being a tablet oriented OS, it has similarities with the Windows Phone 7 interface.

We took a while to download the 32 bits version of the developer preview from MSDN site. The file is an ISO file which you would need to burn it into a DVD ROM. It took us a while to get it installed into a Dual Core Atom Net Top.

As we did not boot up from DVD ROM but installed it as an upgrade from Windows 7, the screens were not the usual screen shots we see when installing Windows 7. In a seperate install on another EeePC 900, the procedure and screen shots looks identical to a Windows 7 installation.

The system detected that the nettop has a WiFi built in and asked user to setup which AP to connect to.

In settings, we chose express settings to speed up installation. It will take the default settings in configuring the system.

For Logon, we have to supply a Windows Live email address.

Consumers can download the Windows 8 Developer Preview starting TONIGHT at 8:00 PM Pacific Time at the following link. The developer preview will run on both 32-bit (can’t we kill you already??!!) and 64-bit x86 computers. No activation will be required for those that choose to install the software, but you will need a Windows Live ID to initiate the download.

Be prepared for slow servers as everyone and their grandma will be rushing to get in line to get their “Metro on” with Windows 8.

The Windows 8 Developer Preview can be downloaded RIGHT NOW.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) will demonstrate Windows 8 running on tablet at a developer conference in Anaheim, California, following a preview of the design in June. The product is an attempt to vault Microsoft into a fast-growing market controlled by Apple and Google Inc.’s Android software.

Windows 8’s design resembles Microsoft’s software for mobile phones in its use of digital tiles instead of icons to help users move between programs, according to the June demonstration by Windows President Steven Sinofsky on a 10.6- inch tablet computer.

Sinofsky at the time declined to say when the software would be available, except to note it “won’t be this fall.”

The design of the software is similar to the tile interface on Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 mobile-handset software. Like that program, Windows 8’s tiles can be automatically updated to display information from applications on the computer’s start screen. For example, a weather application can tell users that it is forecast to be sunny without requiring them to open the app.
