ASRock releases pictures of 4 models of Intel X79 boards – X79 Extreme4 M, X79 Extreme4, X79 Extreme7 and X79 Extreme9; X79 Extreme4 M – the first mATX X79 board

ASRock X79 Extreme4 M

So far we have seen a number of ATX boards. This is probably the first mATX board that we come across.

The ASRock X79 Extreme4-M looks very elegant in that Gold/Black colour scheme. With 3 full length PCIe 3.0 slots and 1 PCI slot on board, the PCIe  slots are capable of supporting either CrossFire X or SLI.

In terms of expansion, there are only 4 memory slots, 2 on each side of the socket LGA2011. DDR3-2400+ (OC) is supported as indicated on the mainboard.

On the board, we can also see the power on/off, reset, debug led. There are 6 SATA connectors on the front. The board also supports 1394a, USB 3.0.

On the back of the mainboard, we can see the PS/2 keyboard & mouse connectors, S/PDIF optical and digital out, USB 3.0, eSATA, GbE and audio ports.

The chipset is attached with a heatsink / fan powered by X-FAN.

SINGAPORE – Singapore’s SingTel has developed an application to rival the voice-activated Siri on the iPhone 4S that can understand the republic’s widely spoken Singlish – a localised version of the English language which include words like leh, la, how huh etc.

This is probably a response by Singapore telco Singtel to ensure that customers get the best experience from their brand new iPhone 4S as there are many youtube videos that shows Siri either responding with a completely irrelevant answer or simply saying it does not understand when the phone was first launched in Japan.

Singapore Telecom (SingTel) says its new app, DeF!ND, will help Singaporeans who use “Singlish” to decipher uniquely Singaporean accents, names and locations.

It made its public debut at the stroke of midnight Thursday, when SingTel Singapore chief executive Allen Lew gave it an instruction in a decidedly local accent as he launched the iPhone 4S in the city-state.

“We have a voice application capability in DeF!ND that is unique because it understands the local language… which the voice recognition engine within an international device like Apple doesn’t quite have,” Lew said after the launch.

“When we tried to test different voice recognition systems including… Siri, we found that the Singaporean accent is pretty unique and the common international voice recognition systems don’t quite pick up the nuance of how we speak,” Lew added.

“And of course our street names and our food names are very local so we developed and trained this new system to allow it to recognise it better.”

DeF!ND will be available for free on the Android platform and Apple’s iTunes “soon,” a Singtel spokesman told AFP.

A reader of ours sent us a link on hwbot that report on the availability of the upcoming processor with board and heatsink bundle. That isn’t really a surprise as leaks are like that always happen in China. If you live in China, you can already buy your Sandy Bridge-E system.

Sony Ericsson to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony and integrated into Sony’s broad platform of network-connected consumer electronics products
The transaction also provides Sony with a broad IP cross-licensing agreement and ownership of five essential patent families
Ericsson to receive EUR 1.05 billion cash payment
Sony and Ericsson to create wireless connectivity initiative to drive connectivity across multiple platforms

Sony Corporation (“Sony”) and Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (“Ericsson”) today announced that Sony will acquire Ericsson’s 50 percent stake in Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB (“Sony Ericsson”), making the mobile handset business a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony.

The transaction gives Sony an opportunity to rapidly integrate smartphones into its broad array of network-connected consumer electronics devices – including tablets, televisions and personal computers – for the benefit of consumers and the growth of its business. The transaction also provides Sony with a broad intellectual property (IP) cross-licensing agreement covering all products and services of Sony as well as ownership of five essential patent families relating to wireless handset technology.

As part of the transaction, Ericsson will receive a cash consideration of EUR 1.05 billion.

During the past ten years the mobile market has shifted focus from simple mobile phones to rich smartphones that include access to internet services and content. The transaction is a logical strategic step that takes into account the nature of this evolution and its impact on the marketplace.

This means that the synergies for Ericsson in having both a world leading technology and telecoms services portfolio and a handset operation are decreasing. Today Ericsson’s focus is on the global wireless market as a whole; how wireless connectivity can benefit people, business and society beyond just phones. Consistent with that mission, by setting up a wireless connectivity initiative, Ericsson and Sony will work to drive and develop the market’s adoption of connectivity across multiple platforms.

“This acquisition makes sense for Sony and Ericsson, and it will make the difference for consumers, who want to connect with content wherever they are, whenever they want. With a vibrant smartphone business and by gaining access to important strategic IP, notably a broad cross-license agreement, our four-screen strategy is in place. We can more rapidly and more widely offer consumers smartphones, laptops, tablets and televisions that seamlessly connect with one another and open up new worlds of online entertainment. This includes Sony’s own acclaimed network services, like the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network,” said Sir Howard Stringer, Sony’s Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President. Mr. Stringer also noted that the acquisition will afford Sony operational efficiencies in engineering, network development and marketing, among other areas. “We can help people enjoy all our content – from movies to music and games – through our many devices, in a way no one else can.”

“Ten years ago when we formed the joint venture, thereby combining Sony’s consumer products knowledge with Ericsson’s telecommunication technology expertise, it was a perfect match to drive the development of feature phones. Today we take an equally logical step as Sony acquires our stake in Sony Ericsson and makes it a part of its broad range of consumer devices. We will now enhance our focus on enabling connectivity for all devices, using our R&D and industry leading patent portfolio to realize a truly connected world” said
Hans Vestberg, President and CEO of Ericsson.

When Sony Ericsson started its operations on October 1, 2001, it combined the unprofitable handset operations from Ericsson and Sony. Following a successful turnaround the company has become a market leader in the development of feature phones by integrating Sony’s strong consumer products knowledge and Ericsson’s telecommunications technology leadership. The WalkmanTM phone and Cyber-shotTM phone are well known examples.

With the successful introduction of the P1 in 2007, Sony Ericsson early on established itself in the smartphone segment. More recently, the company has successfully made the transition from feature phones to Android-based Xperia™ smartphones. By the end of the third quarter of 2011, Sony Ericsson held a market share of 11 percent (by value) in the Android phone market, representing 80 percent of the company’s third quarter sales. During its ten years in operation Sony Ericsson has generated approximately EUR 1.5 billion of profit and paid dividends totaling approximately EUR 1.9 billion to its parent companies. Prominent models include ”XperiaTM arc” and “XperiaTM mini” which received 2011 EISA Awards, while recent notable additions to the lineup include “XperiaTM PLAY” and “XperiaTM arc S”.

The transaction, which has been approved by appropriate decision-making bodies of both companies, is expected to close in January 2012, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals.

As a result of obtaining full control of Sony Ericsson, Sony will consolidate Sony Ericsson from the closing date of the acquisition. The resulting impact of the acquisition to Sony’s consolidated results for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2012 is currently being evaluated.

The three Singapore telcos, M1, Starhub and Singtel has already announced their price plans for the new Apple iPhone 4S that goes on sale on 28 OCT 2011.

We have consolidated the various price plans into this chart for your easy reference. So, which telco give you the best deal? Let’s analyse it for you.

If you are on a budget constraint and wants the latest gadget at minimum cost, the M1 plan seems to be the cheapest among the three telcos. At S$36 a month, you get the same amount of local outgoing minutes. Other than the iPhone 4S 16G is $7 more expensive than the two other telcos, the 32GB and 64GB model are relatively cheaper than Singtel and Starhub.

What about the S$56-$59.90 range plans ? For this plan, M1 again is the cheapest in terms of per month subscription.  Data bundle are all 12 GB. SMS doesn’t really matter as you can use Whatsapp or imessaging  on iOS.  Other than it’s pricing of iPhone 4S 32GB which is more expensive than Singtel, both Starhub and Singtel can’t match M1’s pricing.

As for the $98-$99.99 range, M1 again seems to edge out the two competitors. It has unlimited data bundle. So, you can use this plan to replace your broadband if the HSPA speeds are good at your location. With unlimited data, you can make SKYPE calls, download videos without worry. M1 is also generous to provide 700 minutes of outgoing calls. The price for it’s 4S 32GB is also cheapest of all. As for iPhone 4S 64GB, Singtel is $2 cheaper but you pay $2 more monthly for the subscription.

Now, the highest plans. M1 again is cheapest at S$198. Singtel and Starhub both has 2000 minutes and 2000 SMS bundled in. M1 on the other hand gives you unlimited incoming calls. Data is both unlimited on M1 and Starhub but capped at 30GB for Singtel. You don’t have to pay upfront for iPhone 4S 16GB and 32GB models. As for iPhone 4S 64GB model, Singtel is $7 dollars cheaper than M1 at S$115 and Starhub at S$128.

Before you decide on which operator and plan to take. It is important to know some of the perks that are available on the various networks. Among the 3, Singtel and Starhub both has 3G video streaming from their pay tv service. M1 on the other hand lacks out this feature.

Secondly, Singtel so far has the widest coverage and signal shouldn’t be an issue in most parts of the country. The other two operators do have good signals in prominent towns and in city area. 3G signal coverage is not as far reach as Singtel.

Thirdly, you have to consider the network. If you use the data bundle for serving internet, which one gives you a better experience in terms of speed and loading?

Fourthly, if you travel often, you might want to check who are their roaming partners. Certain roaming partners offer better roaming rates if you log into their network when overseas.

So, good luck and enjoy your new iPhone 4S. Any comments, please post them at this link

ASUS P9X79 Series
Bluetooth 26 Oct 2011

If you are not a gamer or overclocker, the ASUS P9X79 series motherboards should be a better bet in terms of cost/performance ratio.

The P9X79 series comes in 3 variations but most of the features are the same. The picture below shows motherboard has 8 DDR3 slots capable of DDR3-2400 (OC). There are 3 PCIe slots allowing 3 way CrossFire/SLI. It has a new DIGI+ Power control, SSD caching, BT GO 3.0! just to name a few of the new feature set on this board.

From the set up below, you can see that the heatsink   almost occupy 1/4 of the mainboard. At the rear of the mainboard, we can see USB 3.0 ports, eSATA 6Gbps ports and audio ports.

First look at ASUS Rampage IV Extreme
bluetooth 26 Oct 2011

ASUS Singapore held an event last week, showing off it’s latest Intel X79 boards to the members of the media. We were invited to witness the new product line up for Intel X79 Socket LGA 2011 motherboards.

3 series of boards were announced and they are the Rampage IV Extreme, TUF series – SABERTOOTH X79 and the standard P9X79 series.

We will first take a look a the Rampage IV Extreme. Ramage IV Extreme, being in the top of the ROG series targets the Extreme overclockers, power users and probably the rich kids who is willing to spend more than to do soldering work themselves.

From the board layout, we can see the familiar black red colour scheme.

The Rampage IV Extreme is based on INTEL X79 Express chipset that sports the LGA2011 socket type. From the screen shot, we can see that it supports up to 8 x DDR3 DIMMs of up to DDR3-2400 (OC).

There are also 5 PCIe full length slots that allows you to pair up to 4 cards in either Quad CrossFireX or QUad SLI.

On the right rear of the board is the OC Zone where the Overclocking features can be found. They include ProbeIT, Onboard buttons, PCIe x16 switch, LN2 mode, Slow mode, voltminder 2 LED, Go button.

For the front connectors, there are 4 SATA 3Gbps and 4 SATA 6 Gbps ports. There are 4 USb 3.0 and 4 USB 2.0 external connectors on board. (Detail pictures are on next page).

At the rear of the motherboard is the PS/2, Clear CMOS, 2 USB 2.0 (1 for ROG connect), 1 Bluetooth v2.1+EDR, 4 USB 3.0, 2 eSATA 6Gbps, 1 Intel GbE Lan, 7.1 ch audio and 1 SPDIF out.

Today, we just witnessed an overclocked LGA2011 processor. The processor runs on the Intel X79 Express chipset mainboard with a regular heatsink. We observe the temperature at IDLE, it reads around 45 degrees.

A check on the CPU monitor shows that the CPU is running at a multiplier of 41X with CPU CLK set to 120MHz. This gives us a reading of 4.92GHz. The memory was running DDR3-2400 at CAS 10. CPU Vcore was 1.51v.

From the readings, it looks like the new Core i7 would be a pretty good overclocker. Who cares about LN2 when you can achieve such high speeds even on AIR. The retail processor should do better.

LG Optimus 3D P920 3D Android Phone Review
Bluetooth 23 Oct 2011

Phones have evolved so much these few years, from keyboard to touch screen, to voice control etc. Although most people will agree that most Android phones are just iPhone look alike with similar features, LG Optimus 3D is otherwise.

LG Optimus 3D, is quite different from it’s competitors. Based on Android 2.2 which LG promised an upgrade, the LG Optimus 3D spots a glasses-free 4.3″ wide display, displaying 3D contents that are recorded by the phone or from Youtube. The dual 5 mega pixel camera is capable of doing real time video recording and still images both in 3D. 3D videos can be uploaded to youtube immediately. It can also record 2D videos at 1080P HD resolution and 720p in 3D.

There is also a 3D hot key on the rear of the phone. It can convert 2D to 3D vice versa by the press of the button. 3D game converter is added in the latest firmware (v10d). You can also share and view 3D videos on the large screen effortlessly, with HDMI 1.4 connection to 3D equipped TV.

All this is accomplish with LG’s advanced “tri-dual” configuration: a dual-core, dual channel and dual memory architecture based on the ground breaking TI OMAP4 chipset. This configuration enables users to enjoy significantly improved performance and run-time compared to any other smartphone. Unlike other dual-core smartphones, with single channel and single memory, the LG Optimus 3D enables the simultaneous- and thus faster transfer of data between its dual-core, dual channel and dual memory.

The phone is capable of running on 2G GSM 850/1800/1900, 3G HSDPA (900/1900/2100) and hSDPA (1700/2100/850), HSDPA-HSPA+ (14.4Mbps/5.7Mbps) networks. It has a dimension of 128.8x68x11.9 and weighs 168g.

The screen is a 3D LCD Capacitive Touch screen with 16M colours at (480×800). It has a battery pack of 1500mAH. The processor is a Dual-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, PowerVR,SGX540 GPU, TI OMAP4430 chipset.

In the following pages, we will take a look at the interface, pictures and videos recorded using the phone.

From our usual source of information, third party heatsink makers might not be able to ship their heatsinks in time for the launch of Sandy bridge E.

As the new processors has a larger footprint and occupies almost 1/4 of the motherboard, heatsink manufacturers have to factor in design considerations to ensure that it doesn’t block the surrounding DIMM slots and other peripherals.

Although these heatsinks might be in shortage, the OEM heatsinks should be sufficient to handle the heat dissipation from the Sandy bridge operating at room temperatures.

We are also aware that some designs of motherboards might be able to adapt older generation of heatsinks, perhaps with 2 sets of mounting screws on the PCB.

So if you intend to do some overclocking, you might have to hang on a while for the better heatsink to go retail.
