Mobile phones with contracts in the USA is usually cheaper. That is because the phones are locked to a particular network and you can’t run away from it especially when roaming overseas.

Verizon Wireless, AT&T Inc. (T), Sprint Corp. (S) and T-Mobile US Inc. (TMUS) said yesterday they’ll let consumers use smartphones on other networks after contracts expire.

U.S. wireless carriers agreed to unlock customer’s phones so that they can use it on competitor’s network. The companies will have to give explicit instructions on ‘hacking’ the phone to unlock it to be used on other networks.

This change will take effect within a year of formal adoption by members of CTIA-The Wireless Association, Steve Largent, the industry group’s president, said yesterday in a letter to Tom Wheeler, chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.

Do you still you prefer to be locked to an operator for a cheaper smartphone or get it unlocked even without a contract to begin with ?
