European officials approves Oracle’s $7.4 billion takeover of Sun Microsystems

Posted on 26 January 2010 by bluetooth

European officials approves Oracle’s $7.4 billion takeover of Sun Microsystems. Tomorrow 27 Jan Oracle CEO Larry Ellison outlines the software giant’s plans to expand into the hardware and systems business and axing non profitable product lines and slashing jobs.

Sun employs 28,000 people worldwide, including more than 5,000 at its main campuses in Santa Clara, Calif., and Menlo Park, Calif. Oracle has more than 83,000 employees around the world.

Both companies are mum on possible layoffs. In a memo to employees last week, Sun denied one analysts’ prediction that up to half of Sun workers could lose their jobs.

Oracle has high hopes for Sun: It expects a $1.5 billion profit from Sun in the next year. But such lofty goals probably require hefty cuts in Sun’s workforce, Gillen and others say. “Oracle has to move quickly on this because Sun’s business has meanered since Oracle announced its acquisition (of Sun in April 2009),” Gillen says.

Intel Clarkdale Core i5-661 dual channel memory becomes single channel

Posted on 25 January 2010 by bluetooth

As you probbably know, the Intel Clarkdale processor comes with graphics and memory controller integrated into it. A voltage bump in this delicate CPU would mean damaging the internals of the processor.

It is really unfortunate that this happened to me. My Core i5-661 is dead. No matter how many boards and ram combinations I use, the Dual memory channel set up just couldn’t POST. The processor still works but it is now running in single channel memory mode.

So, be exceptionally careful with your Clarkdale processors whenever you test new bioses or bumped up the voltage levels.

San Jose, California – January 21, 2010 – Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced a new line of TeraDrive SSDs designed specifically for high end enterprise and database server applications.

“Super Talent has a solid track record of developing leading edge SSDs. Their new TeraDrive series, incorporating SandForce technology, is an impressive advance in enterprise storage” commented Thad Omura, VP Marketing at SandForce Inc.

The new TeraDrive FT2 is a SATA 3Gbps SSD based on the advanced new SandForce SF-1500 SSD processor. It delivers sequential read and write speeds up to 250MB/sec that will not degrade over time. It also supports blazing fast transaction speeds up to 30,000 IOPS, making it a formidable storage solution for database servers where random read and write speeds are critical.

The TeraDrive FT2 makes no compromises in reliability or endurance with state-of-the-art wear leveling, bad bit management, and excellent ECC with up to 24 bytes correctable per 512 byte sector. Set to revolutionize enterprise storage, the TeraDrive FT2 is available with either MLC or SLC NAND flash, and is offered in capacities from 50GB to 400GB.

Apple in talks with Microsoft to replace Google as default search engine on iPhone OS 4

Posted on 21 January 2010 by bluetooth

According to a report on BusinessWeek. Apple is in talks with Microsoft to replace the default search engine Google on its phones with Microsoft’s BING.

This came as a surprise as Apple might just work hand in hand to ward off a potential giant Google. It is also becoming clear that Google is the common enemy.

The Nexus One competes directly with the iPhone; Apple is allowing Google to use Lala, for now; and with Apple’s purchase of Quattro Wireless and Google’s acquisition of AdMob it seems each company is gearing to directly compete with the other in the mobile ad market. “Apple and Google know the other is their primary enemy. Microsoft is now a pawn in that battle,” says one of BusinessWeek’s sources who is familiar with the matter.

But this isn’t just about Apple and Google. As the BusinessWeek article points out, clinching the coveted default spot on the iPhone would also help Bing gain market share in the quickly growing area of mobile search. 86% of mobile searches belonged to Google in November, according to the Nielsen Co. Only 11% belonged to Bing.

Nokia makes worldwide walk and drive navigation free on smartphones

Posted on 21 January 2010 by bluetooth

Nokia makes worldwide walk and drive navigation free on smartphones

SINGAPORE, 21 January 2010 – Nokia today announced plans to make walk and drive navigation free on its smartphones as part of a new version of Ovi Maps, available for download at www.nokia.com/maps. Nokia’s mapping and navigation software has been specifically designed for mobile use and is based on unique hybrid technology. The new version of Ovi Maps will include all essential car and pedestrian navigation features, such as turn-by-turn voice guidance for 74 countries in 46 languages, and traffic information for over 10 countries, as well as detailed maps for over 180 countries.

“We want to make using your mobile for navigation as familiar as using it to send a text or take a picture. We believe that making the best maps with voice guided navigation available for free will be the catalyst to do this,” explained Vlasta Berka, General Manager, Nokia Singapore/Malaysia & Brunei. “Why have multiple devices that work in only one country or region? Put it all together, make it free, make it global and you have something that is truly useful and can help you get round almost any city in the world whether you’re on foot or driving.”

Five key features that sets Ovi Maps apart:

1. No hidden costs
The new version of Ovi Maps comes with all the maps and high-end, car grade navigation features you need for free and is yours to keep for the life of the smartphone. No additional licenses needed for extra countries, regions or services like traffic information or city guides. Data charges from network operators may apply.

2. Best global coverage
You take your mobile with you wherever you go in the world so, as standard, voice guided navigation for both pedestrians and drivers is available for 74 countries in 46 different languages and there are maps for over 180 countries. This gives you the best maps with the largest global coverage for free.

3. No network connection required when navigating
Avoid expensive, battery-draining network connections with Nokia’s unique hybrid technology. Maps can be pre-loaded on to your Nokia smartphone so you can set Ovi Maps to offline mode, saving battery power, and the navigation system will still work. This is particularly useful for those worried about data connection costs when travelling abroad or when you are travelling through areas with little or no network coverage.

4. Unique hybrid-graphics technology
Ovi Maps is built on an advanced technology called hybrid vector maps. Vector maps are high quality but less data intensive and allow you to continue to navigate even if you lose your network connection. This means that maps downloaded or updated across a network connection are about half the size of bulky bitmaps used by other mobile map providers. The hybrid technology ensures that, unlike other providers, any downloaded map data is stored on the device for future use.

5. Voice guidance & traffic information
Turn-by-turn, voice guided navigation comes free for both drivers and pedestrians. For drivers this includes lane assistance, traffic information, safety camera and speed warnings. For pedestrians this includes shortcuts through parks and pedestrian-only zones for over 100 cities around the world as well as 6000 3D landmarks in over 200 cities to help you find exactly where you are.

Will Motorola MotoBlur work or get ported to Windows Mobile ?

Posted on 20 January 2010 by bluetooth

At a press event Q&A session held in Singapore, the media posed some questions to the speaker Mr Spiros Nikolakopoulos, VP and GM of Motorola Mobile Devices. He mentioned that MOTOBLURr can work and can be ported to Windows Mobile. At this stage, Motorola hasn’t made any decisions.

The media also posed question why the DEXT is launched instead of the Milestone. Motorola replied that the Milestone does not have Motoblur which supports the customised integrated social media tools on top of Android.

As the Motorola DEXT is powered by CupCake 1.5, it will be updated to 2.0 in the middle of this year. The MOTOBLUR service on top will get updated when available.

Motorola Introduces a Unique Mobile Experience with the Launch of Motorola DEXT, Exclusively with SingTel

Singapore – 20 January 2010 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SingTel) introduced in Singapore a unique mobile service platform with the launch of Motorola DEXT™, Motorola’s first Android-powered device.

SingTel customers will be the first in Asia to enjoy this breakthrough social mobile device, powered by the unique MOTOBLUR™ platform and complemented by SingTel’s mSocial service plan.

Developed by Motorola, the MOTOBLUR™ platform is one of the first solutions to synchronize contacts, posts, feeds, messages, e-mails, photos and more – from sources such as FacebookTM, TwitterTM, MySpaceTM, Gmail™, work and personal email – and automatically deliver them all to the home screen.

Motorola DEXT™ is the first device in Motorola’s Android-powered product portfolio to come with MOTOBLUR™. Following a string of successful and acclaimed launches of its new generation of Android-powered smartphones in North America and Europe, Motorola brings the DEXT™ to Singapore customers looking for an easy, intuitive and smart way to manage their work and social lives – all with the touch of a finger. Plus, users will have access to more than 18,000 applications through Android MarketTM, as well as the ability to search GoogleTM right from the homescreen.

SingTel will offer a newly created value-added service, mSocial, priced at S$5.35 per month for consumers to enjoy unlimited local mobile data using the MOTOBLUR™ platform. These include photo uploads, postings received and status updates on popular social networking sites, including FacebookTM and TwitterTM within the MOTOBLUR™ service platform

mSocial includes 100MB of local data for all other internet surfing and email access. In addition, excess usage beyond 100MB is capped at S$30 per month, giving customers peace of mind when using Motorola DEXT. Also, as a launch promotion, mSocial is free to all customers who sign up for any 3G Flexi plans with the device.

“Life’s a blur. So much to do, so little time! MOTOBLURTM connects everyone in your life by blurring the lines among the various social networks,” said Spiros Nikolakopoulos, Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific and International Distribution, Motorola Mobile Devices. “Today’s mobile phone must be more than ‘smart’. It needs to be social – and the DEXTTM funnels your entire social life into a single stream, making it easy for you to keep track of all your friends, your conversations, your life. No more reason to be anti-social!”

“SingTel and Motorola have cultivated a longstanding relationship through many years of successful collaborations. DEXTTM is no exception and the innovative MOTOBLURTM platform makes it a breeze for customers to stay connected right from the home screen. With SingTel’s affordable mSocial service, customers’ social networking experience will be taken to greater heights when they engage friends, without worrying about data charges, said Ms Sarah Chua, Vice President, Consumer Marketing, SingTel.

SingTel customers can also access a suite of services to meet their mobile lifestyle needs. The exciting services include: i) MobileTV viewing for Channel 8 Primetime, Channel NewsAsia, Bloomberg  and Football Frenzy ii) TrafficLIVE, an intelligent traffic planning service and iii) Android applications like SingTel’s first “BroadBand on Mobile” data usage application for Android devices. This application allows customers to keep track of their data usage and will be available free of charge soon.
