HTC Dream (Singtel) finally gets Android 1.6 Over the air update

It has been a long wait and finally customers who owns the Singtel Dream (HTC Dream) get the free firmware upgrade to 1.6

Unfortunately, things didn’t go smoothly for most and complains were made at google mobile help forums regarding firmware problems.

One such problem reported by many is the Speech Synthesis. Google Search doesn’t seem to work correctly.

-Unable to install voice data for Speech Synthesis, Greyed out “Accessibility” option.
-Google Search shows white space.

I tried to do a Factory data reset from “SD card & phone storage” –> “Factory data reset”. I still faced the above problems.
I tried downloading the “SpeechSynthesis Data Installer” from the android market to install the voice data. When I open the application, I get the following error message,
“Sorry!
The application Speech Synthesis Data Installer (process com.svox.langpack.installer) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.”
I am then presented with the choice to “Force close” the application.
Trying the application again results in the same error message as above.

  1. Google Voice is an absolute lifesaver. The features of it are amazing, for example the ability to screening calls. I’ve got some invites if anyone wants any. Also I hope that Apple rethinks the GVoice App, hwo could such an killer application get denied by Apple?

  2. You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with your story.
