Kingston 16GB MicroSD SDHC Class10 card Review

Posted on 16 March 2010

Kingston 16GB microSD SDHC card  is a class 10 card, it promises a minimum of 10MB/s write. You would definitely find performance to be smoother while recording HD Video as there will be minimum wait time. In addition, the Class 10 speed helps photographers optimise their equipment when it comes to shooting in burst mode as the memory card keeps up with sequential capture.

The Kingston SDHC Class 10 card is designed to meet the SD™ Association Specification 3.00 with a guaranteed minimum data transfer rate of 10MB/sec.

With 16GB of SD, I would easily 123 mins of Standard Definition or 107 mins of High definition (720p) on my Canon TX1. Don’t be surprised by the size as Canon TX1 records in MJPEG which is huge.

If a AVCHD codec is used in your camcorder, it should be able to record up to 361mins. The recording time will surely outlast your battery.

6 Mbps HD
Extended
9Mbps HD
Standard
13 Mbps HD
High
361 min 240 min. 166 min.

On the next page, we test out the speed of the SDHC running it with Kingston reader FCR-HS219/1 and compare it with a Class 4 card we had to see the performance difference.

Starhub ups HSPA+ to 42.2Mbps for downlink speed usnig dual carrier technology

Posted on 16 March 2010

StarHub commences HSPA+ network upgrade using Dual Carrier technology, first in Southeast Asia to reach peak mobile broadband downlink speed of up to 42.2Mbps

StarHub also commences technical trials for next-generation LTE technology

Singapore, 16 March 2010 – StarHub, together with its technology partner Huawei, has successfully concluded tests of its HSPA+ network using Dual Carrier frequency technology to achieve a peak data downlink speed of up to 42.2Mbps. An upgrade of the HSPA+ network is now being implemented progressively to further enhance the overall efficiency of the network.

This announcement has made StarHub the first mobile operator in Southeast Asia to have successfully deployed the Dual Carrier technology on its HSPA+ network to achieve up to 42.2Mbps in peak download speeds. Dual Carrier technology is based on the principle of bonding two carrier channels, which allows the increase of the transmission to double the current maximum value of 21Mbps.

Commenting on this exciting development, Mr Peter Cook, Vice President, Integrated Network Engineering at StarHub, said: “The deployment of 42.2Mbps HSPA+ Dual Carrier technology is a straightforward upgrade of our current HSPA+ network that will double our current downlink peak rate of 21Mbps. We are basically installing new software into current network equipment, with minimal hardware upgrade required. StarHub is excited that it will soon be able to manage even larger volumes of data traffic and continue to support the highest HSPA speeds available in Singapore, to meet the growing demand for broadband access on the move.”

Huawei Singapore Managing Director Mr He Rong said Huawei’s HSPA+ solution with dual-carrier technology makes the best of an operator’s spectrum resources, enhances spectral efficiency and results in capacity gains of up to 20%. “We would like to congratulate StarHub for achieving this important milestone. The enhanced HSPA+ network is set to give mobile broadband customers a higher level of user experience, thus truly enriching lives through communication,” commented Mr He.

StarHub has also commenced technical trials of LTE technology. The company believes that LTE will provide further enhancement of its mobile broadband data services in future.

“LTE deployment is in our roadmap for mobile broadband, and we are now diligently testing the new technology with plans for a rollout in future,” Mr Cook added.

Today, StarHub boasts the highest mobile broadband network experience in Singapore at a nationwide deployment, of up to 21Mbps (downlink). It also offers the market’s fastest mobile broadband service – MaxMobile Elite – that gives individual and business users up to 21Mbps for downloading. In addition, StarHub offers the most comprehensive range of mobile broadband products for both its post-paid and pre-paid customer groups.

SONY will ship their 3D TVs with 2D->3D “upscale” capability too

Posted on 16 March 2010

Last week, we witness two electronic giants showcasing their 3D TV one week after another. We were impressed by the promised 2D -> 3D by Samsung but they did not demonstrate it at the SEA forum. Perhaps it is not ready for the public. Are they seriously able to deliver their TVs by end March with the upscale feature ?

We asked SONY Singapore and their comment is that their 3D TV’s are capable of 2D to simulated 3D conversions via SONY’s proprietary technology. It is also able to convert 3D content to 2D.

Please note that the 3D effect is simulated only when converting from 2D content to 3D- so the effect and the way viewers perceive depth in the image varies depending on the content.

It is an official feature on the SONY LCD TVs when it starts shipping in July this year (Singapore).

AMD “quad-cores” could be unlocked as hex cores (6 cores)

Posted on 16 March 2010

There have been some talk about new South bridge SB850 locks out the possibility of unlocking hidden cores from your dual core or triple core processors.

In fact, some board makers provide special functions to bypass the so called “ACC unlock” function found previously in SB750. They are able to unlock the hidden cores on Phenom II 550BE, X3 710.

Hex core processors are around the corner and we have heard news that the yield initally would be low. Would these processors be repackaged as Quad Core later remains unknown. If there are such products, there is a high chance you can unlock the 4 core into a 6 core processor.

Crucial 8GB Kit DDR3-1333/PC3-10600 CT2KIT51264BA1339 Memory Review

Posted on 15 March 2010

These new Crucial 4GB UDIMM DDR3 modules were announced recently and each module has 4GB per module instead of the so far usual 2GB per module.

This capacity makes an enormously high memory upgrade possible for current High-End systems, because with e.g. 4x 4 GB modules it is possible to reach gigantic 16GB DDR3 RAM. This is fantastic for developer of 3D animations and graphic designer, but also for all other power users with a 64 bit operating system.

Two of these new Crucial PC3-10600 4GB UDIMM modules were tested as 8GB Dual Channel DDR3 kit in an AMD socket AM3 system, compared with some other RAM kits and overclocked to the maximum limit.

Microsoft officially ends support for VISTA on 13 Apr and XP/2000 will end on 13 Jul

Posted on 15 March 2010

On April 13, 2010, Vista RTM will reach the end of support while on July 13, 2010, Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 Professional will reach the same milestone. In addition, Microsoft will be ending support for Windows Server 2000 and moving Windows 2003 from Mainstream Support to Extended Support.

The end of support means there will be no more security updates for these versions. This is in-line with our existing support lifecycle policy that has been in place since 2002.

It’s important that all customers take an action prior to the end of support date to ensure they are as secure as possible with their Windows PCs. Options include:
· For customers ready to update their PCs or OS to a newer version, Windows 7 provides the best experience today. Windows 7 is faster, easier and works the way customers want.
· Customers not ready to upgrade and continue to use Windows XP or Windows Vista should download and install the latest service pack: either Windows XP SP3 or Windows Vista SP2

Microsoft is making it as easy as possible for customers to understand what version of Windows XP and Windows Vista they’re using today and how to upgrade their PCs to the version that’s right for them
· Consumers should visit http://windows.microsoft.com/eos for information and assistance.
· For SMB customers with a Select agreement, we will continue to offer the “Up to Date Discount” program through July 2010. Visit www.windows.com/business for more information
· For enterprise customers that need to stay on the unsupported products, there is the option for them to purchase custom support, to continue to receive custom updates.

Updates that keep customers’ PCs safe are provided through Windows Update at no cost. All customers should turn on automatic updates to get critical updates automatically, and check in every once in a while to make sure they are getting all the latest improvements for your PC. This includes upgrading to Internet Explorer 8 and downloading Microsoft Security Essentials.
